Few people associate the winter sports of downhill and cross-country skiing with Australia;yet numerous Alpine resorts are located in the Victorian and NSW high country. Despite the brief snow season from July to September, and the relatively low altitude of Australian mountains compared to Northern Hemisphere Alps, the popularity of winter sports continues;yet it is subject to both economic and climatic challenges. This case study describes one of Australia’s largest ski resorts, the Victorian destination of Mt Buller some 230 kilometres north of the capital city of Melbourne. It presents information regarding the economic benefit of the winter sports industry and Mt Buller to the Victorian economy. It also addresses the challenges of global warming and the threat of rising temperatures leading to less reliable snow and shorter seasons. It describes the adaptation strategies employed by Mt Buller designed to mitigate these effects. It also includes the disastrous economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry and raises concerns regarding the potential recovery and continued adaptation strategies as a result of this unprecedented event. © (2022), (Taylor and Francis).","PeriodicalId":215809,"journal":{"name":"Regional Businesses in a Changing Global Economy","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124847727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the emerging economies assume greater shares relative to the advanced economies of the world, local and international businesses are poised to reposition their engagement portfolios. Globalisation and shifting political and economic landscapes are contributing to significant changes in populations, urbanisation, resource utilisation, technology, the internationalisation of production locations, and stakeholder attitudes. In a highly globalised trade and investment environment, attention needs to be given to how businesses can benefit from geographically dispersed activities. The world is much more connected through trade and movements in the capital, people, and information. With the evolution of communication networks, there is now greater connectivity. The rise and role of non-profit organisations and civil society groups are exerting pressure on business enterprises to comply with international standards of human rights and labour laws. Trade and finance have long been part of the globalisation story but, in recent decades, there has been a significant shift. Instead of a series of lines connecting major trading hubs in Europe and North America, the global trading system has expanded into a complex, intricate, sprawling web. Asia is becoming the world’s largest trading region. ‘South-South’ flows between emerging markets have doubled their share of global trade over the past decade. Each year Australia brings in around 180,000 skilled migrants to run its economic activities. The challenges of the post-global financial crisis have forced businesses and countries to be innovative, and the links forged by technology have ushered in a dynamic new phase of globalisation, creating unmatched opportunities and, yet at the same time, provoking unexpected volatility.The impact of COVID-19 on businesses has devastating outcomes. Business impacts of COVID-19 include business revenue, operating expenses, and employment. A study in July 2020 on 2,500 businesses shows that 47% reported a decrease in revenue and 54% are surviving due to cash support by the government. The majority of businesses suffer as the demand for their goods and services is reduced. Consequently, many businesses reported that they have reduced staff hours or let staff go. COVID-19 has resulted in some of the greatest supply chain disruptions ever experienced in Australian food and agriculture – affecting trade into both domestic and export markets and challenging producers to employ creative freight and operational strategies. The most commonly reported impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are a lower demand for goods and services, cash flow issues, and having to change business practices. Nearly one-third of businesses have reduced staff since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The cases in this book will analyse the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on business in various sectors of Australia foc","PeriodicalId":215809,"journal":{"name":"Regional Businesses in a Changing Global Economy","volume":"390 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115026767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unprecedented closures of newsrooms, printing sites, and newspapers opened up a market for the second coming of the small, independent ‘bush’ newspaper publisher. This chapter examines one particular case of a new greenfield printer/publisher, and asks, does technology hold the key to how future regional newspapers will emerge from the COVID-19 collapse? Is Australia likely to see the return of the ‘bushranger’ publisher – small, independent, and activist?. © (2022), (Taylor and Francis).","PeriodicalId":215809,"journal":{"name":"Regional Businesses in a Changing Global Economy","volume":" 909","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113947054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter examines the factors influencing the key managers’ decision to revive the declining small businesses in Australia and their turnaround success in recent years. Evidence has been collected from 25 severely troubled small businesses in Australia between 2006 and 2018. Findings reveal that managerial factors such as cognition of decline, the extent of a personal and professional network, capabilities, motivation and leadership of the key managers and their access to critical resources considerably influence the successful revival of a declining small business in Australia. Moreover, organisational factors such as the composition of the top management team, stakeholder management and firm’s breadth, depth, and lifecycle along with some external factors may also influence the key manager’s decision to revive the business and their selection of turnaround responses. Implications are drawn for the entrepreneurs and managers of small businesses in Australia. © (2022), (Taylor and Francis).","PeriodicalId":215809,"journal":{"name":"Regional Businesses in a Changing Global Economy","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133097230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the key focuses of this case is how Australia Post has radically and successfully repositioned itself from a government-run organisation to a Government Business Enterprise (GBE). As part of this process, Australia Post adopted a franchising system to drive down costs, as the government forbids the closing of unprofitable post offices due to Australia Post’s community obligation. This GBE has also formed alliances with compatible companies to provide new services as well as to increase the efficiency of existing services. This chapter also discusses how Australia Post has taken a quick and smart decision to provide services during the COVID-19 pandemic. It has used its brand name and Australia wide networks to reach communities living in remote and regional areas. Australia Post has gained the capability and successfully diversified itself to the extent that as a GBE it will remain a well-performing enterprise. © (2022), (Taylor and Francis).","PeriodicalId":215809,"journal":{"name":"Regional Businesses in a Changing Global Economy","volume":"201 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134119275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
