I present three poems, in which Pollakówna refers to cosmic and infi nity: Podróż,Alchemia and Kataklizm o zmierzchu (the last one is a text published only in a journal; it didn’t appear in Wiersze Zebrane) and I point out her humor and courage. Such an image of Pollakówna’spoetry doesn’t fit the well-established opinion about her work (considered to be confessional, meditative). In the second part of the article, I recall Camille Flammarion, the astronomer and philosopherwho inspired the poet in her youth. Synteza biograficzna schyłku życia Elizy Orzeszkowej","authors":"Hanna Miera","doi":"10.19195/0079-4767.60.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.19195/0079-4767.60.3","url":null,"abstract":"The article is a study of the melancholic nature of Eliza Orzeszkowa, an attempt to notice Orzeszkowa not as a writer, but an unhappy woman. The main aim is to show the sorrow at different times in her life. Difficult events from her biography were recalled in the article. Paying attention to such issues allows us to better understand the creations of the heroes in her literary works — especially distanced, snippy mothers. Selected works, letters and the diary Dnie were analysed. Orzeszkowa spent almost all her life in the region of her origin. The first painful experiences for her were the remarriage of her mother and then the death of her sister. The arranged marriage with Piotr Orzeszko did not last long. Also, she did not find happiness in her long-term relationship with Stanisław Nahorski. She constantly missed love. Although Orzeszkowa was appreciated as a writer (she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twice), lifelong she felt inferior and sometimes even hated herself. From childhood she experienced states of melancholy. Esej o pamiętaniu [Friends from Birkenau: An essay on remembering] published by the University of Silesia is a kind of diary about the life of women in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The author describes the fate of her mother and her friends confined in one of the most horrific war camps. This publication, apart from descriptions and memories of female prisoners, contains original letters and photographs collected by families, which allows the reader to refer to the past more directly. The book was divided by the author into chapters which intensify the women’s experiences: from pre-war times through the war period to regaining freedom and returning to their family homes. Reading the book, one gets to know the early life of young girls who were unexpectedly captured and transported to the concentration camp. Their fates are intertwined with the struggle for existence, forced labour, camp experiences and the anticipated freedom. Important throughout the book is the documentation collected by the families of the prisoners. Post-war letters, mutual contacts, feelings and family memories make the reader feel close to the characters. The author tries to describe the lives of girls coming from different regions of Poland, whose fates were intertwined with each other. The book shows different ways in which the female prisoners were treated, based on their nationalities. In an attempt to make camp life more real for the reader, the author refers to prison correspondence. In his books such as Pochówek dla rezuna, Syrop z piołunu. Wygnani w akcji „Wisła” and Krzyżyk niespodziany. Czas Goralenvolk (written together with Bartłomiej Kuraś) the author reveals the dark side of incidents that occurred during the Second World War and soon after. With full consciousness of the stereotypes and tradition fixed in the Polish memory, shows his relation to the history of na-tion from, on the one hand, and excavates from it the essence that may and should lead to a better understanding of the present time, on the other. Using the biography of ordinary people, Smoleński, showing the full value of private, colloquial, sometimes internally discrepant voices, reconstructs the process of passing into silence, political control of reminiscences and historical falsehood. His books are stories written to warn. \u0000First of all, it is very good literature with a universal message. Smoleński shows in a very in-teresting way the “human measure of history,” helplessness of ordinary people in the face of politics and formal institutions, the easiness of controlling the reaction of masses and power of the language of propaganda. In their style and construction, they are based on the formula of the western pattern. It is worth pointing out that these films are quite good. There is some evidence that the formula of the Wild West story possesses a some timeless and universal vigor. In my essay I have analyzed Polish westerns such as Ogniomis-trz Kaleń by Ewa and Czesław Petelscy (1961), Jerzy Passendorfer’s Zerwany most (1962), Bohdan Poręba’s Droga na zachód (1961), Aleksander Ścibor-Rylski’s Wilcze echa (1968), Edward Skórzewski’s and Jerzy Hoffman’s Prawo i pięść 1964), Waldemar Podgórski’s Południk zero (1970), and the famous picture Róża, by Wojciech Smarzowski (2011). A lot of new authors and shows have appeared. The original drama, however, is very slow at the stage of major theatres. Whereas, in the seventeenth and eighteenth century normalization seasons, the determinations of individual categories prevailed in the culture and art and not only the theatrical strict genological rules. Nevertheless, this long-standing stereotype has been eroded by a number of dramatic productions with various typological features performance, body art, site-specific art, happening event, post-dramatic tendencies, documentary theatre, etc., thus cultural and artistic acceptance has been enforced. Afew comments about the work ethic of physicians in the Age of EnlightenmentThe purpose of this article is to present the portrayal of medics in the literature of Polish Enlightenment. The profession of the medical doctor did not receive acceptance of the society in the 18th century. Medics gained the bad reputation earlier, and writers of Enlightenment continued to incline to beliefs that had arisen in previous centuries. By patients, doctors were viewed as enemies of health. The appearance of the barber-surgeon in the house of the sick was considered a harbinger ofdeath. Writers claimed that medicines served by medics might only ruin patients’ health. According to them, the result of the treatment relies solely on acoincidence, not medical skills of the caregiver. In literature, doctors were often accused of ignorance. Writers were ridiculing the practice of using sophisticated, incomprehensible terms while possessing no practical skill and being inefficient. In the 18th century Europe, there were many impostors with no knowledge, who claimed to be medical authorities. Spectres in Dariusz Suska’s villanelleThe article presents an attempt of reading the poems of Dariusz Suska with his villanelle taken into particular consideration, in the context of Jacques Derrida’s hauntology and the idea of the ‘weak thought’ by Gianni Vattimo. The key question for the hereby presented interpretation is the issue of inheritance, understood — following Derrida — not as something that we simply inherit, but as a task to accomplish.
