This study investigated the occurrence, bacterial load, antimicrobial susceptibility and biofilm formation of L. monocytogenes in pork, slaughter facilities and water from Oko-Oba abattoir, Lagos State, Nigeria. A total of 216 samples; 146, 30, 20 and 20 from pork, water, table swabs and knife swabs respectively were collected for bacteriological analysis. Listeria selective media was used to isolate and characterise L. monocytogenes, antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolated bacteria was also determined. Biofilm production by the isolates for periods of 12, 24 and 36 hours were evaluated. Glucose, ethanol and crystal violet binding assay were used as nutrient, stressor and indicator respectively. The occurrence of L. monocytogenes in pork, water samples, table and knife swabs were 64.5%, 75%, 90% and 95% respectively, while overall prevalence was 73.3%. The mean load per gram were 3.78 ± 2.85, 4.27 ± 2.54, 5.60 ± 1.95 and 5.52 ± 1.41 (p ˂ 0.05) for pork, water table and knife swab samples, respectively. Fifty five percent of the isolates exhibited multidrug resistance (MDR) patterns to erythromycin (55%), tetracycline (55%), augmentin (85%), amoxicillin (90%), cotrimoxazole (95%), and cloxacillin (100%). The isolates produced biofilms at different concentrations of glucose and ethanol with the highest concentrations of biofilm produced at 36 hours. There were significant differences in mean biofilm values produced by the isolates. The occurrence of L. monocytogenes and the bacterial load in different samples are of economic and public health importance. Hygienic meat production from the abattoir could prevent contamination of pork by L. monocytogenes.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72828727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clinical diagnosis was based on history of reduced appetite and enlarged testis; physical findings such as pyrexia, tick infestation, congested ocular mucous membranes, generalized enlarged superficial lymph nodes, enlargement of the mammary glands, alopecia, atrophy of the right testis and discoloration of the scrotum with large, firm palpable mass; complete blood count revealed slight anaemia (PCV 34 %, neutrophilia (12.88 x 109/L) and presence of band cells (0.32 x 109/L); buffy coat smear  showed the presence of intracytoplasmic morulae in just one monocyte in the peripheral blood smear; Ehrlichia canis antibodies was detected in serum using  Ehrlichia test kit (immunochromatography); serum oestradiol-17β (42.05 pg/mL) and anti- Müllerian hormone (AMH; 25.50 μg/mL) were employed as serum tumour markers; transverse and longitudinal scrotal sonographs revealed diffuse non-homogenous tissues with increase in the echogenicity of the testicles; radiographic findings of thoraco-abdomino-pelvic regions revealed normal organ opacity indicating absence of metastases. Tissue samples were taken from the tumor following surgical excision and submitted for histopathology. The findings were large cytoplasmic vacuoles with slightly irregular nucleoli. It was confirmed to be sertoli cell tumor. The conditions were managed medically, and by surgical excision of the tumour and scrotal ablation. Outcome was successful, and patient started feeding 24 hours after the surgery.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78884988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two hundred and forty day-old Ross 308 hybrid broiler chicks were randomly assigned into groups A, B, C and D of 60 chicks each and were raised in deep litter housing. Broiler starter (BS) and broiler finisher (BF) mash were formulated each with 5% MOL included as part of the feed ingredient for broilers in groups A and B while BS and BF for broilers in groups C and D were formulated without MOL. Broiler chickens in groups A, B and C were challenged at 35 days of age with 0.05 ml of a live vvIBDV, while those in group D served as control. Daily feed intake (DFI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and average body weight gain (ABWG) was used to assess the growth performance. At 42 and 49 days of age, significant difference was observed in the feed intake of broilers in groups A, B and C when compared with group D (p = 0.0001). At 49 days of age, broilers in group A and D significantly (p = 0.0001) added more weight than those in groups B and C respectively. Broilers in group B had a significantly (p = 0.0006) lower FCR than those in group A, C and D at 28, 35 and 42 days of age. Despite the challenge with vvIBDV, MOL inclusion in the diet of broiler chickens resulted in reduced DFI, good FCR, increased ABWG and final body weight and carcass weight.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81283323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Appearance of alopecia and hair pulling was noticed in an institutional sheep farm consisting of Balami, Uda and Yankasa breeds aged between 3-48 months. This was noticed over a period of 1 month in a total of 15 animals consisting of 9 ewes and 6 rams. Physical observations revealed alopecia. Blood samples and skin scrapings of the animals were negative for haemo- and ectoparasites, and faecal sample examinations were also negative. The feed analysis confirmed the correct nutrient requirement were compounded, but the feed consistency was observed to be too fine. Hay and/or pasture was not provided as required by the animals, hence, nutritional deficit was suspected. The finely ground feed was replaced with a coarse form and hay supplied ad libitum. The problem abated and the bare skin patches returned to normal in 4weeks after the diet was adjusted.  Feeding of these species of animals concentrates diets of fine particle and inadequate forage or hay could have negative effects on animal health and performance.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75520552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Body surface measurements were obtained from six African pangolins (Manistricuspis) – 3 males and 3 females. Facial and body measurements obtained from the pangolins revealed that the females had higher averages for body weight, body length and girth. The dimensions of the head showed that the males had a wider zygoma. Also, the manus and arm (humerus) in the females were longer (27.52±3.80 mm and 59.69±3.54 mm respectively) than in the males (26.95±3.35 mm and 50.68±10.22 mm respectively), while the lengths of the arm and the leg (all its components) were longer in the males. Data obtained from this study may provide basic information in assessing and comparing other species of the pangolin, and find application in archaeological, forensic and comparative anatomy of wildlife.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88029290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, the effects of prolonged oral administration of the aqueous leaf extract on some biochemical profiles of mice were evaluated. A total of 80 mice were allocated to 4 groups (A, B, C and D) comprising of 20 mice each. Mice in group A (control) were given (1 mL) of distilled water orally while 1 mL of the extract was given to the mice in groups B, C and D daily at the concentrations of 800, 1000 and 1200 mg/kg, respectively. This was continued for three weeks and at the end of each week, 4 mice from each group were humanely sacrificed and sera from blood samples collected were used for determination of activities of biochemical parameters. The results showed that administration of the extract resulted in significantly (p < 0.05) lower concentrations of total protein and cholesterol in the treatment groups at the 3rd week of treatment when compared to control values. Glucose level was significantly (p > 0.05) higher in the extract-treated groups by the 3rd week of treatment, while activities of AST, ALT and ALP were not significantly (p > 0.05) altered by the extract. There were no significant (p > 0.05) differences between the levels of calcium, total and conjugated bilirubin in treatment and control groups, while sodium concentration was significantly (p < 0.05) higher at day 14 after withdrawal of treatment, compared to the control. This study suggests that the extract of Acalypha wilkesiana has a hyperglycaemic effect.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85920861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eight adult goats aged 10 to 24 months (16±5.2 months) were used. The first group of 4 goats received 3 mg/kg of tramadol intramuscularly (IM), and 2.5 mg/kg of diclofenac sodium was administered to the second group of 4 goats before induction of anesthesia IM. Mechanical pain scores, clinico-physiological and red and white blood cell counts were evaluated over a period of twelve hours post drug administration. The study groups were not revealed to the postoperative pain assessors until the end of the study. There was no significant difference in the rectal temperature values and the analgesiometer readings between the tramadol and diclofenac groups (p<0.05). The variations in the pulse rate, respiratory rate, red and white blood cell counts between the groups fluctuated within the normal physiological limits.It was therefore concluded that preoperative intramuscular administration of tramadol at 3 mg/kg provided similar effective postoperative analgesia with diclofenac at 2.5 mg/kg IM following femoral diaphyseal fracture management in goats.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90371502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surgical management include subtotal colectomy, colotomy, internal obturator muscle transposition and perineal herniorrhaphy. This report highlights a case of perineal hernia associated with megacolon as well as its successful management in a dog. A seven years old, male Rough Collie was presented with a complaint of right perineal swelling that has lasted for a week as well as inappetance and absence of defecation. Physical examination was unremarkable except for 3% dehydration and a firm, large perineal non-reducible swelling. Plain abdominal radiography revealed perineal hernia with megacolon. Serum chemistry showed azotaemia. Emergency surgical intervention involving colotomy, perineal herniorrhaphy with incisional colopexy were conducted. Post-operative care included ceftriaxone injection at 50mg/kg intramuscularly, intravenous fluid infusion, one week fasting, daily wound dressing, Nutriplus® gel supplementation and administration of recovery diet post-fasting. Thus, surgical management using traditional perineal herniorrhaphy, colotomy with colopexy was effective in correcting the perineal hernia with megacolon.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76723619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 4-year-old, 2.3 kg, female Oriental Shorthair was referred to Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a rapidly expanding mass on its left nasal bridge and nasal discharge. Physical examination revealed stertorous respiratory sounds and a mass on the left nasal bridge measuring 3.2cm x 2.5 cm. Computed tomography of the nasal cavity showed mass effect in the left frontal sinus with extensive orbital bone lysis and loss of calvarial bone. Radiographs of the thorax showed possible evidence of metastasis. Fine needle aspirate was performed on the mass and also regional lymph nodes. Subsequently, nasal adenocarcinoma was diagnosed through cytology. Prognosis of the patient was poor as the patient’s condition was significantly complicated by asthma and possible lung metastasis. Palliative treatment was pursued using meloxicam as radiotherapy was not a viable option in this case.","PeriodicalId":21527,"journal":{"name":"Sahel Journal of Veterinary Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78404010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most bacterial infections of the thyroid gland occur via the pyriform sinus fistulae and by hematogenous spread from systemic bacterial diseases. A 2 year-old Yankasa ewe was presented with complaint of anorexia, weakness and a swelling 4-5cm around the ventral neck region near the larynx. Swelling was identified as abscesses. The cut section of the gland contained a thick creamy purulent exudate from which Staphylococcus aureus was isolated. Microscopically there was necrosis and accumulation of neutrophils and macrophages in the thyroid gland. The liver showed fatty degeneration of the hepatocytes. Staphylococcus aureus, a pyogenic bacterium is a normal micro biota but can also be an opportunistic pathogen especially with immunosuppression.
