Sa","doi":"10.18853/JJELL.2017.59.4.008","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18853/JJELL.2017.59.4.008","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper, I explore Helena Maria Viramontes’s Under the Feet of Jesus published in 1995, in terms of what I call “postcolonial environmental injustice.” That is, I demonstrate that through the hard life of Estrella’s family, Viramontes shows how Mexican workers have been oppressed in American society. They have been exploited as cheap, “illegal” laborers without legal protection; They have been threatened by dangerous working conditions. In addition, I explore this work with postcolonial approach, on the basis of the historical background that through the Mexican War in 1846 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 Mexicans lost their lands and property rights; Since then, Mexican laborers have been exploited as “illegal” migrant workers. In short, I demonstrate that in Under the Feet of Jesus, Viramontes shows the postcolonial environmental injustice that has been done on Mexican migrant workers. The study uses research conducted by Pyke and Dang (2003) and Kim (2013a) as the basis for how films can be used to demonstrate how Asian Americans exhibit internalized racism toward other coethnics by denigrating them as either “FOB” (Fresh off the boat) or “Whitewashed” in order to situate themselves in the bi-cultural middle of the acculturation continuum. The study examines how Asians and Asian Americans perpetuate the ideology of the dominant class in America that identifies Asian Americans as either perpetual foreigners or as too assimilate by giving up their “Asianness” through the use of “disidentifier” to deflect their stigmatized status. The paper maintains that the attempt by Asian Americans to straddle the bi-cultural middle is a disciplinary practice in the Foucauldian sense to deflect the status of a stigmatized status rather than as an act of acculturation or assimilation into the mainstream society.
