Even with advances such as kernel bypass and zero-copy IO, middlebox platforms still struggle to meet stringent throughput and latency requirements. To achieve line rates as network bandwidths rise, these platforms often must make tradeoffs such as inefficiently dedicating more CPU cores or weakening security and isolation properties. In this paper we explore how advances in programmable “smart NICs” can be leveraged by software middlebox platforms to improve performance, resource efficiency, and security. Our evaluation shows several use cases for smart NICs, which improve performance significantly while reducing resource consumption and providing strong isolation.","PeriodicalId":214356,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks (LANMAN)","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116204821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current proposals for devices typically use cellular networks as the backhaul or final hop. These devices will leverage existing trust-based client-side channel metrics, such as Channel Quality Indicator (CQI), when the base-station determines scheduling decisions. In this paper, we investigate the scheduling impact of a malicious device when it changes its channel metrics, so as to improve its download rate or even to negate the download rate of others. We utilise real-time 4K ultra-high definition video delivery as an example of high throughput demand application and compare the delivery rates of multiple devices in an open-source 5G simulated NS-3 network. Our results illustrate that when a malicious client deceives the scheduler, the other clients in the network have a noticeable decrease in both viewable quality and underlying delivery rate (25% decrease in the average video quality across the non malicious clients).","PeriodicalId":214356,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks (LANMAN)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129555191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, Multi-access Edge Computing is proven to minimize the latency for accessing services located at the network edge. In this demo, we showcase a disaggregated heterogeneous Cloud-RAN, consisting of cellular and WiFi infrastructure, providing access to edge resources placed on the fronthaul of the network to multi-homed UEs. In this paper, we argue that Named Data Networking (NDN) presents a good synergy with the needs of CV applications. This drives us to propose an NDN based CV application framework with a distributed data service model. However, the fast mobility and vast moving area of vehicles lead to significant challenges on the efficiency and scalability of the underlying NDN backbone in the framework. To handle this issue, we propose a novel hierarchical hyperbolic NDN architecture (H2NDN). By taking advantage of the location dependency of CV applications, we design a hierarchical router topology and the associated namespace. This enables Interest packets from CV applications to be forwarded towards Data (cache) holders efficiently through static FIB configuration. However, the resultant hierarchical routing can easily overload high-level routers. Thus, we further integrate hyperbolic routing into the architecture through carefully designed hyperbolic planes in the hierarchical topology. As a result, the load is better balanced to ensure the overall scalability. Finally, extensive NDNsim based simulation with real traffic data proves the efficiency and scalability of the proposed H2NDN architecture.","PeriodicalId":214356,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks (LANMAN)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114248685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without reliable, satisfactory performance at the last hop, end-to-end quality of service (QoS) efforts will fail. Three major reasons for WiFi bottlenecking performance are its: 1) inherent wireless channel characteristics, 2) approach to access control of the shared broadcast channel, and 3) impact on transport layer protocols, such as TCP, that operate end-to-end, and over-react to the loss or delay caused by the single WiFi link. In this paper, we leverage the philosophy of centralization in modern networking and present our cross layer design to address the problem. Specifically, we introduce centralized control at the point of entry/egress into the WiFi network. Based on network conditions measured from buffer sizes, airtime and throughput, flows are scheduled to the optimal utility. Unlike most existing WiFi QoS approaches, our design only relies on transparent modifications, requiring no changes to the network (including link layer) protocols, applications, or user intervention. Through extensive experimental investigation, we show that our design significantly enhances the reliability and predictability of WiFi performance, providing a “virtual wire”-like link to the targeted application.","PeriodicalId":214356,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks (LANMAN)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125671552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On one side, RAN disaggregation based on the Cloud-RAN concept allows the instantiation of base stations in an area based on demand, whereas on the other side NFV-MANO orchestration brings effortless delivery of services deployed over distributed infrastructure. In this paper, we demonstrate a disaggregated heterogeneous CloudRAN, consisting of cellular and WiFi infrastructure, deployed through the Open Source MANO orchestrator in the distributed infrastructure of a testbed. VLC is a short-range wireless communication variant which uses the visible light spectrum. In this paper, we are using a VLC-based architecture for providing scalable communications to Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices where a multi-element hemispherical bulb is used that can transmit data streams from multiple light emitting diode (LED) boards. The essence of this architecture is that it uses a Line-of-Sight (LoS) alignment protocol that handles the handoff issue created by the movement of receivers inside a room. We start by proposing an optimization problem aiming to minimize the total consumed energy emitted by each LED taking into consideration the LEDs’ power budget, users’ perceived quality-of-service, LED-user associations, and illumination uniformity constraints. Then, because of the non-convexity of the problem, we propose to solve it in two stages: (1) We design an efficient algorithm for LED-user association for fixed LED powers, and (2) using the LED-user association, we find an approximate solution based on Taylor series to optimize the LEDs’ power. We devise a heuristic solution based on this approach. Finally, we illustrate the performance of our method via simulations.","PeriodicalId":214356,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks (LANMAN)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114577163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
