The banks, both Public and Private, have transformed themselves into profit-oriented business organizations besides playing a developmental role in the economy. In an attempt to be more profitable, the banks have become competitive and more customer-oriented. This new orientation has compelled them to take a more pragmatic approach for conducting the business. In the backdrop of this scenario, the study reviewed implementation of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and the impact of CRM on service quality and customer retention in ten public and private sector banks of India. It was found that the Private Sector Banks have been able to implement the CRM practices more effectively as compared to their Public Sector counterparts. This fact has further been corroborated by the findings of the service quality level being provided by these banks. Further, it was observed both the public and private sector banks scored the least on responsiveness and empathy factors. Public Sector Banks have fared better in terms of reliability and assurance whereas the Private Sector Banks have fared better in terms of tangibility, reliability and assurance. Further, the results suggest that the banks (whether public or private) are equally affected by CRM initiatives they undertake to retain the customers.","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128111124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The central objective of this paper is to analyze the causes and consequences of global imbalances from the perspective of developing Asia. More specifically, the paper examines the root causes of the large and persistent current account surpluses that have emerged in the region since the Asian crisis. The paper also explores the consequences of global imbalances for the region, in terms of welfare and economic growth. Based on the analysis, a number of concrete policy directions are recommended that will help Asia rebalance its demand and growth toward domestic sources.","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125296887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transparency of the bookbuilding process in India alleviates the winner's curse problem for the uninformed investors and we find that non-institutional buyers follow institutional investors' subscription patterns when bidding for the IPO shares. However, Indian IPOs still exhibit significant positive initial return in the post-listing aftermarket, even after the removal of the underwriters' power of discretionary allocations to preferred institutional clients. These results are inconsistent with Rock's (1986) winner's-curse explanation for positive IPO initial returns and also with that of Benevineste and Spindts' (1989) preferred allocation/information extraction quid pro quo model. We find that the IPO initial return is driven primarily by the unmet demand of the noninstitutional investor groups and consider these results to be generally supportive of Derrien (2005) and Ljungqvist, Nanda and Singh (2006).","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"9 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114026668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As compared to the production of mere 4,000 vehicles in 1950, the production of the industry crossed the historic landmark of 10 million vehicles in 2006. Today, the industry produces a wide range of automobiles and auto-components catering to both the domestic as well as foreign markets. The development of the industry has been shaped by the demand on the one hand and the government interventions on the other; the influence of the latter being considerable. The evolution of India's automotive industry is identified to have occurred in four phases. In the first (1947-1965) and second phase (1966-1979), the important policies identified were related to protection, indigenisation and regulation of the industry. On the one hand, these policies helped India to build an indigenous automotive industry, while on the other it led to unsatisfactory industry performance. In the third phase (1980-1990), the single most important policy identified was the one with regard to relaxation in the means of technology acquisition. The foreign competition inducted into the industry transformed its dynamics. Lastly, in the fourth phase (1991 onwards) the liberalisation with regard to foreign investment had a significant influence on the Indian automotive industry as we see it today. This work traces the evolution of the automotive industry from its inception to present day and identifies the important policies made by the Indian government. The work also studies the influence of important policies on the development of the industry.","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114534441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, a large number of people undergo some fundamental change in household arrangements during relatively short periods of time. However, using data from Indonesia, this study finds that change in household composition is not a major cause of chronic poverty. Similarly, it finds no evidence that households change their composition to cope with negative shocks. Nevertheless, the study confirms that the larger the number of household members, the higher the probability that a household is chronically poor. Comparing different types of household compositions, households with a single female without children have the lowest probability of being either chronically poor or vulnerable, while single male households with or without children have the highest probability of being vulnerable. Frequent changes in household compositions imply that the use of household as the unit of analysis for poverty may undermine, or at least complicate, the conceptualization and measurement of chronic poverty. This also implies that the problem of targeting social protection programs not only relates to implementation, but also has some conceptual roots.","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"605 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116378774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first issue examines factors involved with fraudulent financial reporting practices; i.e. predisposition (i.e. related party transactions, history of prior violations, founders on board), motive (i.e. economic factor, ownership factor, political factor) and opportunity (i.e. poor corporate governance). Then, the second issue looks into the relationship between earnings management and the occurrences of fraudulent financial reporting. The study uses a matched sample of 47 firms that were convicted of issuing fraudulent financial statements during the period from 1996 to 2006. Our results show that firms with fewer related party transactions, higher number of prior violations, and higher proportion of founders on board are more likely to \"tip\" over the edge into fraudulent financial reporting. We also find that the corporate environment most likely to lead to fraudulent financial reporting is characterized by accounting practices that are already \"pushing the envelope\" on earnings management. Furthermore, we find that firms are embroiled in fraudulent financial reporting when non-family and non-foreigners own the company, and when the level of financial distress is high. As expected, our results also show that firms involved in fraudulent financial reporting have significantly poor corporate governance structures whereby the audit quality is lower and outside directors seem overcommitted. However, we find no evidence that firm's political connection factor or the level of board independence play a significant role in the potential for fraudulent financial reporting.","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122466768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Competitive intelligence is the new management tool companies are using for ensuring positive results both on the short and the long term. The following research paper starts by revealing the needs that companies respond to when implementing competitive intelligence and continues with a summary of the main techniques used by businesses to develop an intelligent market approach. The paper also offers a brief description of corporate espionage practices, underlining the differences between these and the competitive intelligence techniques. A case study showing the way that competitive intelligence is implemented in practice is being offered. Conclusions refer to the main differences between corporate espionage and competitive intelligence as well as the driving forces determining the need for acquiring knowledge on competitive intelligence.","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"25 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113977827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the benefits of the new system are funded in nature, it naturally emerges the issue of how the savings should be invested. This paper analyzes the optimal investment policy for the savings in the individual accounts and the solidarity fund, by means of the study of two dynamic portfolio choice problems, to then identify the main components of their optimal solutions. Our results suggest that the current practice of forcing a unique investment strategy for the individual accounts and the solidarity fund may be suboptimal, due to the differences in their investment goals, and the fact that the savings in the individual accounts represent the funded part of the liabilities of the solidarity fund. Additionally, in an scenario in which the solidarity fund presents a high level of solvency [e.g., Bravo et al. (2007), Fajnzylber and Poblete (2008)], our results suggest that the solidarity fund should be allowed to take advantage of the equity premium in the market.","PeriodicalId":213755,"journal":{"name":"International Environment of Global Business eJournal","volume":"113 13","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113944763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
