The balanced CRLH transmission lines are designed by adjusting the optimal distance between the mesh plates for a given size of the mesh windows. To confirm the fundamental operation, the transmission and far field radiation characteristics are simulated and measured for the one-dimensional structure. The numerical results show that the increase in the thickness of metallic mesh plates dramatically reduces the radiation efficiency. Theoretical results show that: (1) in the explicit and implicit case, the dispersion nature of a lumped resistor can be characterized by a series inductor and a series capacitor, respectively. (2) For capacitor, the dissipative nature of the explicit scheme can be replaced by a paralleling resistor. (3) If the semi-implicit or implicit scheme is applied to the lumped inductor, the dissipative inductor can be replaced by an equivalent circuit consisting of an inductor and a series resistor. It is composed of three parts: two interdigital sub-sections and an in-phase T-junction power divider. The topology can be used to design feed network having arbitrary specifications on the amplitude and phase distribution. An iterative technique is described to analyse the structure, where the divider is split into basic blocks. Large networks are then easily designed because the whole structure does not need to be simulated. Furthermore, the convergence is fast and five iterations are sufficient to obtain a variation below 0.1%. Experimental results are also presented. The 1:4 sub-section provides equal output power with 0.5 dB of insertion loss. The FEM features 28 dB gain and 19.8 dBm at 54 Mbps with EVM < 3% and 230 mA for 2.4 to 2.5 GHz. For 4.9 to 5.9 GHz, the FEM delivers 25 dB gain and 16.5 dBm linear output power at 54 Mbps with EVM < 3% and 190 mA. The FEM's receive chains feature low insertion losses, 1.5 and 2.0 dB for low and high band respectively, and >25 dB RX to TX isolation. A High temperature superconducting (HTS) 3-section tandem coupled-line 3dB hybrid coupler and an HTS Lange coupler with a bandwidth of 53% and 48.5%, respectively, were designed on MgO substrates. The measured performance agrees well with the simulated one over the band of interest. The insertion loss of these HTS couplers are only 0.1-0.2dB as expected. This paper investigates an alternative use in high efficiency, class-E RF power amplifiers in the VHF range. Both simulation and experimental results are shown and demonstrate excellent agreement. A maximum drain dc to RF efficiency of 87% was predicted and 86.8 % achieved. An over-voltage protection circuit to ease output mismatch induced problems is included in this PA design. As a case study, this power amplifier is implemented with InGaP/GaAs HBT operating at 1880 MHz. The CDMA standard is used to evaluate its linearity and efficiency. The P1dB is improved from 30 dBm to 32 dBm and the cumulated output current is much improved in a wide output power range. The ACPR and ALTR at 28 dBm output power level are improved by 5 dB and 12 dB with the novel PA respectively. An amplitude comparison monopulse scheme is implemented, where the phased array is capable of scanning the sum and difference beams throughout a 60deg field of view. The sum beam directivity is better than 12 dB within a 6 GHz bandwidth at Ka band. Over 20 dB difference beam nulls were achieved throughout a 1 GHz bandwidth.
