Mello","doi":"10.21577/1984-6835.20230027","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21577/1984-6835.20230027","url":null,"abstract":"An investigation was carried out to evaluate the contribution of the activities and effects of a University Campus on the waters that are part of its natural environment, by focusing on the determination of halogens. This case study was undertaken on the Federal University of Santa Maria campus, Santa Maria city, where teaching and research activities occur, in addition to the main regional Hospital and University Residence inside the campus. Composite sampling was carried out over 12 h at five strategic points, from the stream’s entrance to the exit of the university campus. Chlorine, bromine, and iodine were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and fluoride, chloride, bromide, and iodide species were determined by ion chromatography (IC). Results revealed that among the activities developed on the university campus, those carried out at the hospital have the greatest impact on halogen concentrations. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the chemical composition of hexane extracts from Piper aduncum leaves and inflorescences (HE-PL and HE-PI, respectively) and from Xylopia aromatica leaves (HE-XA) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Antibacterial activities of HE-PL, HE-PI and HE-XA were evaluated in terms of their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC = µg/mL) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC = µg/mL) values by the broth microdilution method in 96-well microplates. Major constituents found in HE-PL were germacrene B (33.1%), valencene (14.5%), β -cadinene (9.1%) and α -humulene (8.1%) while the ones found in HE-PI were sesquiterpenes caryophyllene oxide (20.5%), spathulenol (15.2%) and germacrene B (9.7%). Spathulenol (41.2%), α -copaene (16.6%) and β -phellandrene (7.9%) were the major constituents in HE-XA. Since the extracts under study exhibited excellent MIC and MBC values, they showed high bioactive potential against Bacillus cereus , Salmonella typhimurium , Escherichia coli , Brochothrix thermosphacta , Clostridium botulinum and Pseudomonas fluorescens . Despite this, it faces adversities both to be taught and to be learned. Therefore, this work proposes the theme of aromatherapy in an essential oil extraction workshop as a methodology for contextualizing the teaching of Organic Chemistry. The workshops took place during the 9th Academic Week of the IFFluminense Campus Itaperuna, lasting 15-20 minutes, for 180 students. The workshop was structured in the approach of the Three Pedagogical Moments and used extraction techniques by steam drag, hydrodistillation and by Soxhlet using cloves, cinnamon sticks and peppermint as plant material. 3D-printed molecules of the major compounds of the oils were also used to visualize the structures. The results were evaluated through pre- and post-workshop questionnaires. The synthesis of these monohalogenated analogues is of great importance in organic synthesis, especially for the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, as they are key intermediates in the regiospecificity of synthetic routes for the production of analogues and derivatives of 1 . This review article presents the different regiospecific strategies used for the production of mono-chlorinated, mono-brominated and mono-iodinated analogues of 1 , in addition to highlighting their differences based on melting point and crystallographic studies.
