Methods This is a controlled, parallel, randomized, two-arm, community study. Public and private schools with cafeterias were invited to participate. This study was conducted in 27 school cafeterias in northern and northwestern Rio Grande do Sul, a state in southern Brazil. Representatives of the school communities in the intervention group received an educational program consisting of 160-hour distance training. The most relevant outcomes were the assessment of the hygienic conditions and composition of the menus sold in school cafeterias. All outcomes were analyzed as intention-to-treat and per-protocol. For the analysis of continuous data with normal distribution, an analysis of covariance and the Generalized Linear Model were used. The level of statistical significance considered was p<0.05 for a 95% CI. Results No statistically significant difference was observed between the intervention group and the control group in the studied outcomes. There was a reduction of 76.2 points in the score for hygienic handling conditions (95% CI: -205 to 357; p=0.581). Regarding menu composition, the difference between groups was 0.48% (95% CI: -2.69 to 3.64; p=0.760) for ultra-processed foods, 0.23% (95% CI: -1.13 to 1.60; p=0.740) for processed foods, and 1.02% (95% CI: -2.59 to 4.64; p=0.581) for fresh foods. Conclusion There is not enough evidence to conclude that the intervention had a positive impact on any of the outcomes studied.","PeriodicalId":21305,"journal":{"name":"Revista De Nutricao-brazilian Journal of Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67561617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods Cross-sectional study involving adolescents aged 14 to 19 years, of both genders, attending public schools in Juiz de Fora, MG. Food consumption was assessed using two 24-hour dietary recalls. Foods were classified into three groups according to the degree of industrial processing: (1) unprocessed foods or minimally processed foods, culinary ingredients and preparations based on these foods; (2) processed foods; (3) ultra-processed foods. In addition, weight and height information was collected, with subsequent calculation of body mass index/age to assess the individuals’ nutritional status according to the gender. Pearson’s chi-square, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed, adopting a value of p<0.05. Results The sample consisted of 804 adolescents, with a predominance of females (57.5%). In the sample, 29.9% and 26.1%, of girls and boys, respectively, were overweight. There was a difference in the daily consumption of ready-made sweet-tasting foods, being higher in females (26.2%) when compared to males (18.1%), whereas the consumption of soft drinks (one to four times a week) was 47.2% and 55.6% in girls and boys, respectively (p<0.05). Higher consumption of ultra-processed foods was observed in females (p=0.02) and processed foods in males (p=0.008). Conclusion There was a high contribution of ultra-processed foods in the diet of adolescents in public schools; a high prevalence of overweight was observed in both genders.","PeriodicalId":21305,"journal":{"name":"Revista De Nutricao-brazilian Journal of Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67560425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods Cross-sectional study, with children aged zero to six years. Data collection included interview with parents and children anthropometric assessment. Data was entered on EpiData 3.1 and analyzed on Stata 14.0. Median duration of breastfeeding was assessed according to the independent variables. Two children life tables were elaborated for the years 2004 and 2018. The statistical significance of the median analysis was based on the Wilcoxon Rank Sum test for dichotomic exposure and Kruskal Wallis test for polytomous exposure. Results A total of 1902 children were studied. In 2004, the median duration of breastfeeding was five months (IQR: 2.0;12.0) which increased one month for each weight category increase at birth. In 2018, the median was six months (IQR: 2.0;17.0) and increased two months for each weight category increase at birth. The life table showed that around 20.0% of the children in 2004 and 33% of the children in 2018 continued to be breastfed after 11 months of age. Conclusion The breastfeeding median increased in the period under review. The greater the birth weight, the longer the breastfeeding median duration.","PeriodicalId":21305,"journal":{"name":"Revista De Nutricao-brazilian Journal of Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67560446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study. The sample consisted of 86 adult patients of both sexes undergoing dialysis. 25(OH)D3 concentrations were determined by chemiluminescence; food consumption was assessed using 24-hour recalls, and the serum levels of hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, and transferrin saturation were assessed. Data analysis was performed using the program Stata, with a significance level of p<0.05. Results The results pointed to 25(OH)D3 concentrations compatible with sufficiency, iron levels consistent with normality, and ferritin and transferrin saturation above the reference values. The consumption of carbohydrates and lipids was higher in females. There was no relationship between the adequacy of 25(OH)D3 and the presence of anemia and iron parameters. Conclusion Considering that the mean serum levels of iron and 25(OH)D3 were adequate, it is suggested that resistance to erythropoietin and the inflammatory process may have contributed to the percentage of anemic individuals found in the study.","PeriodicalId":21305,"journal":{"name":"Revista De Nutricao-brazilian Journal of Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67561284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods This is an observational, cross-sectional study with secondary data from the Household Budget Survey, conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics between 2017 and 2018. Families were characterized based on the oldest member: Control (without elderly and oldest-old) or with elderly and oldest-old. The sociodemographic characteristics of the families and the foods purchased by the families were obtained, according to the Nova classification (in natura, processed and ultra-processed foods, in addition to culinary ingredients). Results Families with elderly and oldest-old people had greater availability of fresh foods and fewer ultra-processed foods. In contrast, young families showed greater acquisition of all ultra-processed food items. Conclusion The unfavorable nutritional transition process with fewer in natura foods seemed to be less evident in families with higher age groups. It is concluded that the presence of the elderly and oldest-old in the family could be related to a better quality of the family diet, with a greater presence of fresh foods and a lower acquisition of ultra-processed foods.","PeriodicalId":21305,"journal":{"name":"Revista De Nutricao-brazilian Journal of Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67561428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods This is a cross-sectional study, which was carried out with 300 mothers. Demographic characteristics of the mothers, breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices, and the Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale were collected. As for the statistical evaluation, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 22 statistical package program was used. For the statistical analysis; percentages, mean values, Independent T-Test, One-Way ANOVA, Chi-Square test, and multinomial regression models analysis were used. Results 79.7% of the mothers gave human milk to their infants as the first food after delivery, 36.9% gave only human milk for the first 6 months, 52.0% started complementary feeding at 4-6 months. Of the mothers with a mean The Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale score of 64.38±8.43, 54.0% were positive towards breastfeeding. A significant relationship was found between education and income levels and Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale scores level of the mothers, respectively (χ2=10.001, χ2=10.421, p<0.05). The mothers with a postgraduate degree as educational status (AOR=1.27, 95%CI:1.06-1.53) and mothers who had more income than expenditures (AOR=1.19, 95%CI:1.03-1.63) were associated with a higher positive towards of breastfeeding. Conclusion Although most of the mothers say that they have a positive attitude towards breastfeeding, the rate of those who only breastfeed for the first 6 months is low. As the education and income level of mothers increase, their positive attitude towards breastfeeding increases. Mothers should be informed to initiate and maintain successful breastfeeding.","PeriodicalId":21305,"journal":{"name":"Revista De Nutricao-brazilian Journal of Nutrition","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67559740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study developed and validated a quantitative food frequency questionnaire for assessing the dietary intake of children. Methods This is a cross-sectional study of the development of a food frequency questionnaire for 130 children of both genders aged 7 to 10 years old. For the food frequency questionnaire list, 81 food items were selected. The validity of the food frequency questionnaire was evaluated by comparison with 24-hour recalls and reproducibility was performed by comparing two food frequency questionnaires. Results Most of the foods with 95% relative contribution were ultra-processed, such as packaged snacks and powdered juice. In validation, correlation coefficients were found between 0.45 (p<0.000) for lipids and 0.37 (p<0.000) for carbohydrates. An adjustment for energy reduced the correlations, but there was an increase in the correlation in calcium (r=0.75) and retinol (r=0.20). In terms of reproducibility, all macronutrients and calcium showed a satisfactory intraclass correlation coefficient (>0.400) and moderate correlations [proteins (0.54; p<0.000) and lipids (0.41; p<0.000)]. Methods This was a time series ecological study. Data were collected from the Food and Nutrition Surveillance System. The information concerned Body Mass Index by age, gender and place of residence. A time-trend analysis was performed using linear regression applying the Prais-Winsten technique and serial autocorrelation verification using the Durbin and Watson test in Stata®16.0. Results There was an annual increasing trend for the thinness, risk of overweight, overweight and obesity regardless of gender, age and location and for extreme thinness, with the exception of girls and for the age of 2 to 5 years, which revealed a stationary trend. Among boys and children of both genders under two years of age, annual growth trends were higher for non-eutrophic nutritional status when compared to the other groups. The growth rates of nutritional disorders found in the Northern region were higher than in the state of Rondônia and in Brazil.
