Case studies in the Alps and Apennine context support the analysis. Specifically the paper investigates the role of commons to explore how these practices in urban and rural areas can be different for their relational capacity and strength, but are also complementary in enabling forms of inclusive habitat. Commons in marginal landscapes are examined through the lens of landscape design and space transformation to detect structural challenges and dynamics but also to propose an alternative narrative. These places need the innovative potential of commons to steer a necessary upgrade in the management and use of material and immaterial resources. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. The urban project is located within the social fabric, in the folds of the city, in times and spaces that involve users, administrators, informal groups and associations. The space has been double investigated: from a physical point of view and from a functional perspective, but without forgetting the catalytic action of collective activities and practices of which it is intrinsically bearer. The mapping of the collective spaces and the network of the existing active mobility has been associated with the reflection proposed by the #tuttamialacittà project. Both researches have been carried out in the Veneto region and in particular in the metropolitan city of Venice, and are interconnected with the invisible, where the need to interact with the indeterminacy and ambiguity of the space is tangible, in its many and possible interpretations. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. The contribution aims to present the possibility of a transversal approach, in which the ideals of an ecological and fair society are integrated into space and in its design phases. This method is revealed through the use of nature-based solutions and gender-sensitive approach, applied within urban regeneration processes of marginal areas, considered fertile contexts, in which there is an overlap of environmental problems linked to climate change and gender inequalities. The article will display the application of the aforementioned strategies through the presentation of two case studies, in which the project is not subordinated to the production of the form but rather intertwines ethical and aesthetic values in the construction of common space. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. Bearing in mind the limited room for manoeuvre the designer has when he receives a commission, since he is usually strongly constrained by the limitations of use and function, the consideration of the immaterial dimension of the project is perhaps the only way he can direct it and think of it as a whole. Thinking of the intangible as a project implies making the invisible visible, knowing how to generate a very subtle narration of the place that captures and attracts our gaze without clamour; a gaze that will not be homogeneous, because the perception of public space is always subject to nuances. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. These urban phenomena of uncertainty have been significantly increased after the drastic switch from socialism to privatization in the post-Soviet countries, afterwards resulting as a spontaneous and uncontrolled urban tissue. The study focuses on the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, where, by developing site-specific projects for the neglected urban fragments, finds the opportunity to reflect on the role of public space in the contemporary city. The contradictions of a post-Soviet city demonstrate the difficulties to operate with large scale actions. However, it still suggests the possibility to modify the urban condition through punctual interventions. The architectural proposal has been developed in the frameworks of Tbilisi Architecture Biennial 2020 on the topic of Commonness. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. Bodies have an explicit design value; they are cognitive as well as configurative tools. When we put bodies at the center of the project, we outline performative landscapes in both environmental and aesthetic, emotional and behavioral terms. At the same time, we male authentically erotic landscapes, which are opportunities for mixing, commingling, generating situations pulsating with life. We make landscape of great sensualism, in the very sense of expansion and amplification of sensibilities attentive to contextual interactions, both present and eventual. This paper investigates some of declinations of this statement, going through different scales and fields, from urban history to art history, and then dwells on some notable examples of contemporary landscape architecture. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. However, the increasing privatisation of land and gentrification of the urban landscape is putting a limit on the amount of public space available for people to express themselves and use the city as they desire. This paper investigates and reviews the literature on defensive architecture, as well as its historical foundations, definitions, implementation, and reason for existence. The findings provide a clear reflection on the growing awareness of extreme defensive landscape architecture typologies such as spikes and other aggressive measures. Finally, the paper offers worldwide best-practice examples and recommendations for ensuring inclusion and safety in public spaces. We argue that in order to design sustainable public spaces, a holistic approach that considers both intangible values and social inclusion is required. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. Still utopian, it is thought of as the custodian of our desires, the communitarian expression of a democratic technology, a flexible dimension that will finally welcome a reformed society. As still potential and strictly dependent on our present action, the intangible landscape of ecological transition also has its Yang: the landscape of global warming of 2° C, in the scenario hypothesized by the latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In balance between catharsis and catastrophe there is now a need for effective strategies to make the objective of transition concrete and the landscape, more than a mere destination, can today be understood as the main actor on the urban scene. Having cleared the field of misunderstandings and mystifications, the essay explores the potential of the landscape project as a political project of a solidary as well as ecological transition. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000
Ri-Vista. Architecture is an essential component in them and determines, to a large extent, how building users perceive, interpret, and value the surrounding environment. From an experiential and phenomenological perspective, and taking into account the situations lived in 2020, the paper invites to examine the existing relations between architecture and urban landscape at three levels: first, the experience of the environment from the architectural space —namely, the home—; second, the experience of the “interior urban landscape” at street level; and finally, the experience of the “exterior urban landscape” from the city fringe or vantage points that provide vast prospects. The article advocates a holistic understanding of landscapes from the architectural and planning practice and proposes this integrating issue as the guiding axis of new urban policies.
Ri-Vista.
