{"title":"Bacteriophage specificity in the identification of Yersinia pestis as compared with other enterobacteria.","authors":"M P Nunes, I Suassuna","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Bacteriophage typing of Yersinia pestis and the specificity of the phage among Enterobacteriaceae were investigated. The bacteriophage used for rapid identification of Y. pestis reacted with representative strains of all recognized species of Shigella as well as with Salmonella cholerae-suis. Reactive Shigella serotypes were Sh. dysenteriae 1 and 9, Sh. flexneri 2a, Sh. boydii 1 and 6, and Sh. sonnei. Patterns consisting of isolated plaques (two cases) or absence of plaques were observed when the routine test dilution (RTD) of the phage was used. Results were independent of the incubation temperature (20, 28 or 37 degrees C). Host protection against tumour by previous inoculation of plasmatic membrane of tumour cell (author's transl)].","authors":"R M Gomes, P A Preza, V C Bastos, M G Coelho, K Kovary, H de Castro Faria","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Proteins from plasmatic membrane of ascites and solid 20-methylcholantrene induced tumours cells in inbred mice and rats were obtained by isolation of vesicles of tumor cell membranes produced in glycerol solution. The tumour cells were not broken. In a syngeneic system the inoculation of the prepared protein with adjuvant resulted in protection of 50 to 100% of animals against challenge with a syngeneic tumour cells. The same results were obtained with Ehrlich ascites tumour. Surprisingly both, larger amounts of insulin and longer periods were needed to compensate the metabolic disturbance of the nonketotic hyperosmolar \"coma\" cases when compared to the ketoacidosis ones. {"title":"Autofluorescence and fluorochrome-staining of Hassall's bodies in rabbits.","authors":"W Savino, G L Santa-Rosa","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The phenomenon of autofluorescence is reported in the thymus of rabbits; besides reticular epithelial cells, Hassall's bodies also emit autofluorescence. The staining of thymic corpuscle by fluorescein isothiocyanate is also described. This staining is important not only because FITC is commonly used in immunofluorescence and may lead to misinterpretations due to false-positive results, but also for it permits a good precision in the observation of the relationship between Hassall's bodies and reticular epithelial cells. All the animals were sacrificed 2 hours after the last injection. The biochemical results of nucleic acids in the placentas and fetal livers, and the caryometric data of trophoblastic giant cells and fetal hepatocytes, demonstrated that: 1. When compared the 2 groups, as much the nucleic acids levels (RNA and DNA) of placentas as the nuclear size of trophoblastic giant cells, do not presented statistical differences; 2.
