Euryhaline and estuarine generalist elasmobranchs are a group of 29 species that occupy non-marine environments during particular life-stages. These species are poorly known and disproportionately threatened, with 72.4% at risk of extinction or Data Deficient. A detailed knowledge of a species’ life history characteristics, movement ecology, habitat use, and population structure are required for the implementation of appropriate management and conservation measures. To date, research on euryhaline and estuarine species has lagged behind marine species. Here, a literature review and gap analysis of the euryhaline and estuarine species was conducted to identify gaps in 14 key parameters required for management. Of the 29 species, only the Bull Shark ( Carcharhinus leucas ) and the Largetooth Sawfish ( Pristis pristis ) had detailed information on a majority of parameters assessed. Nine species lack information on most parameters, while the Broadnose Wedgefish ( Rhynchobatus springeri ) lacks information on all but one of the parameters investigated. There is a high level of understanding of age- and size-at-maturity, size-at-birth, and growth for only five species, while nine species have estimates of natural mortality. Comprehensive reproductive biology data is unavailable for six species. Both short- and long-term movement ecology is well-understood for only two species, and habitat use for six species. Population structure has been studied in only eight species. To assess women’s participation in small-scale fisheries (SSF) management and related socio-cultural, environmental, and economic impacts, we conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature (n = 124 case studies). Women had no or limited participation in more than 80% of the examined case studies reporting their participation level in SSF management. Women’s exclusion from SSF management resulted in negative outcomes, whereas their active participation was associated with various positive impacts at multiple scales. Most of the documented impacts were socio-cultural, suggesting a gap in documenting environmental impacts stemmed from women’s participation in SSF management. Importantly, most impacts reported affected the social-ecological system scale, suggesting that gender inclusion may contribute to improving the management of SSF social-ecological systems. This article fills this knowledge gap by synthesizing the data collected since the post-war period, including a large part of the grey literature. France presents a wide variety of surface waters, benefiting from a reduction in pollution and a growing population with an emphasis on leisure activities and on locally sourced food products. Despite this favorable geographical, ecological and human situation, French freshwater fisheries have been in decline since the mid-1970s with a chronically negative trade balance for aquatic products. During this period, numbers of commercial fishers have decreased three-fold due to their affiliation to an agricultural status, and to their dependence on migratory species such as eel, shad and lamprey, which are all in decline. Simultaneously, numbers of anglers have also seen a slow but continuous decline, cushioned somewhat in the last 10 years thanks to the creation of sub-annual fishing cards and the expansion of the total to include the younger classes. Vestiges of a non-commercial fishery, similar to recreational subsistence fishing and employing gear such as dip nets, traps, long lines or even gillnets, have been maintained in a much reduced state around large rivers as well as in the marshes and estuaries of the Atlantic coast. In this detailed study of these different categories of fishing practices in the mid-2010s, we estimate numbers of fishers at 2 million active anglers, 4000 subsistence fishers, and 400 commercial fishers. Their catches are roughly 7600, 200 and 1200 tonnes/year, respectively, for a total of 9000 tonnes/year. The scale of continuous monitoring through visual observations, however, is challenged by the remoteness of the area and logistical constraints. Given the ecological and economic importance of the Southern Ocean, it is imperative that additional biological monitoring approaches are explored. Recently, marine sponges, which are frequently caught and discarded in Southern Ocean fisheries, have been shown to naturally accumulate environmental DNA (eDNA). Here, we compare fish eDNA signals from marine sponge bycatch specimens to fish catch records for nine locations on the continental shelf (523.5–709 m) and 17 from the continental slope (887.5–1611.5 m) within the Ross Sea, Antarctica. We recorded a total of 20 fishes, with 12 fishes reported as catch, 18 observed by eDNA, and ten detected by both methods. While sampling location was the largest contributor to the variation observed in the dataset, eDNA obtained significantly higher species richness and displayed a significantly different species composition compared to fish catch records. Overall, eDNA read count correlated more strongly with fish abundance over biomass. Species composition correlated on a regional scale between methods, however eDNA signal strength was a low predictor of catch numbers at the species level.
