Our aim conducting action research is to understand the work practices of the expected users and to bring this understanding to the design, ensuring that we are enabling users rather than constraining their work. We view this process as a knowledge translation process where researchers and users exchange and create new knowledge about technology and use practices. We argue that action research can be viewed as a knowledge translation process, where researchers and users co-construct a common context for design and use of technology. By providing insights from our two years of action research focusing on the design and use of emergency department information systems within a Canadian hospital, we identify four main activities essential for creating the research context as a knowledge translation context.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130272377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Customer waiting time is inherent to nearly all service operations and represents a system attribute that is of high concern to both the customers who engage service and the managers of the service operation who are responsible for providing services. Effective performance measures of all system attributes are required to improve service quality. In this paper we present a cost-based, performance model for evaluating the expected cost of untimely customer waiting times for services within a service organization. The present worth of the expected costs due to untimely waiting that accrue over a finite time horizon provide management with input for justifying financial investment to support a continuous improvement program to improve service quality through the reduction of the variability in customer waiting time.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130477215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The instrument offers metrics to measure success of collaboration along six dimensions; efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, satisfaction with the process, satisfaction with results and commitment. The satisfaction metrics were used from [1]. The instrument was tested to verify its validity. We found useful instruments for two new constructs; commitment and efficiency. The instrument can be used by practitioners, collaboration engineers and facilitators to assess and compare the successfulness of the interventions they make to support groups in achieving their goal. Further research is required to refine the metrics for productivity, efficiency and effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131318611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a reaction, various best practice frameworks - like COBIT or CMMI - were developed. Due to their origin, these frameworks lack of a sound basis or scientific foundation. To undertake a step in this direction, we propose the use of modeling notation and techniques to represent frameworks as conceptual metamodels. Accordingly, we present the well-known framework COBIT metamodeled in a conceptual way and, thereby, represent the underlying logically and semantically rich structures. We furthermore discuss the benefits of using conceptual metamodeling to analyze frameworks coming from practice. Using the metamodel, we are also able to demonstrate ways to improve the frameworks and configure them according to the specific needs of an enterprise or an industry. To have a sound basis for any improvement we discuss the process of metamodeling and derive some requirements for \"good\" metamodeling.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131663912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In some documented instances, spreadsheet errors have cost organizations millions of dollars. Given the importance of spreadsheets, little research has been done on how they are used in organizations. We review the existing state of understanding of spreadsheet errors, concentrating on two recent studies. One analyzes errors in 50 operational spreadsheets; the other studies the quantitative impacts of errors in 25 spreadsheets from five organizations. These studies suggest that counts of error cells are not sufficient to understand the problem of errors. Average error cell counts reported in the literature range from 1 percent to 5 percent depending on definitions and methods used. However, some errors are benign while others are fatal. Furthermore, spreadsheets in some organizations appear to be error-free. Several types of new research are needed to understand the spreadsheet error problem more fully.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129245507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Guide was intended to improve opportunities for New Zealanders to engage in policy development and service design and delivery through ICT applications, within the context of the long term Development Goals for the New Zealand State Services. In an interesting process of self-reflection the development of the Guide itself forms the basis for one of three case studies of online participation in NZ agencies where the principles outlined in the Guide have been applied and tested. The case study concludes with some evaluative frameworks that have been developed as part of the ParticipatioNZ wiki, the online forum used to develop the Guide, and uses these to assess the effectiveness of the three online participation projects.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125491494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Significant drivers of this development are collaboration-related information systems. A structured discourse is essential here, due to the practical relevance and the interdisciplinary nature of this issue. This paper presents a scientometric study on publications focusing on digital collaboration in cross-organizational and cross-border settings. We reviewed 80 articles published in six leading journals, EJIS, ISJ, ISR, JAIS, JMIS, and MISQ, during the 2000-2007 period. Besides the topics of investigation, subjects to analysis were the distribution of the articles by journal and year, authorship characteristics, and composition and regional distribution of the involved research teams. The findings indicate that most papers are focused on cross-organizational issues while cross-border research is very rare. Moreover, the structure of the research teams significantly differs across journals, and the number of international research teams is modest. Based on the findings, key observations and implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"277 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126844307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As one of the instantiations of service systems, Web services (WSs) offer a new paradigm for distributed computing and system collaboration. Recently, Web service composition (WSC) has increasingly gained attention from SSME community since it aims to provide value-added WSs by combing existing WSs. In this paper we firstly survey WCS methods, among which Petri net-based methods are listed. As a variant of high-level Petri nets, XML nets have formal semantics, graphical nature, and the strength in ex-changing XML-based structured data. They are very suitable for WSC because messages can be modeled and manipulated as place tokens for message passing, and the labels in arcs can be used to model constraints for WS discovery and selection. Using XML nets for WSC can thus improve WSC models and increase their dynamics.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"31 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126878583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
