The quotidian, largely undocumented operation of cultural heritage institutions is particularly important when archives are interpreted as reflecting the intentionality of their founders. Archive Wars seems to be based on the assumption that cultural heritage workers are fully, or at least highly aware of the mission statements issued by the regime and the institution they serve. Occasionally, this may be the case, but the messiness of archival and cultural heritage work, in its most daily manifestations, often creates a disconnect between the actual treatment of a record and artifacts and the institutional mission statement. Moreover, archival records and cultural heritage artifacts assume new meaning in new contexts, but rarely do archives get reorganized in their entirety. In other words, the archive and its classifications often undermine their previous and current logics. Despite this messiness, archives and cultural heritage institutions tend to promote a narrative of order and intentionality. This narrative is often adopted by the critics of the archive. Without access to the archive’s archive, it may be quite difficult to see these changes and the long shadow messiness casts in their fuller scale. The greater visibility of intentions in urban development project may be an outsider’s illusion, but, historiographically, it may be easier to grasp the fuller scale of these projects. As one of the very few monographs on the history of archives and cultural heritage in the Middle East, Archive Wars leaves its readers with much to reflect on. The questions the book raises and the honesty with which Bsheer addresses the difficulty of answering them in the context of Saudi Arabia should inform whoever is trying to understand and work with and against the region’s archival grain.","PeriodicalId":21066,"journal":{"name":"Review of Middle East Studies","volume":"55 1","pages":"191 - 194"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48793193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Founded by Palestinian NGOs in 2005, BDS aims through peaceful means to pressure Israel to comply with international law and end the occupation of Palestinian land. Arguably, no issue has roiled Middle East studies as much in recent years. The call to support BDS continues to face charges of antisemitism as well as challenges to its claims to be both Palestinian-led and a “movement” (although I will call it one here). In some cases, support for BDS has also jeopardized academic careers. Then, too, there is the question of BDS’s efficacy and relevance. Both defenders and supporters acknowledge that the effort to mobilize international pressure on Israel suffered a heavy blow with the 2020 “Abraham Accords,” the Trump administration’s ungainly deal to “normalize” relations between several Arab states and Israel. The impact of this attempted realignment remains unclear, but few dispute it has weakened BDS and further marginalized Palestinians. Given this background, can a course centered on BDS now seem anything other than indulgent? Who cares if BDS is right or wrong if many believe it hasn’t a chance? In 2019 I developed and taught a new, BDS-centered undergraduate political science seminar. Subsequent events may call into question whether this upperlevel elective class should continue to be offered. I believed then that, while teaching about BDS is intellectually, ethically, and even professionally fraught, so is ignoring it because BDS shapes political behavior. Indeed, since that time the Biden campaign’s 2020 promise to defeat BDS has only echoed Trump-era","PeriodicalId":21066,"journal":{"name":"Review of Middle East Studies","volume":"55 1","pages":"28 - 34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41330592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, the plural subjectivities emerging within the camps highlight a further connection between spatial marginalization and precarious legal statuses. My research hinges on the interconnectivities evolving around the Palestinian Bourj el Barajneh camp and Hezbollah-controlled Beirut southern suburbs moving from an ethnographic insight of the Palestinian football society. Inside the “Refugee Football Leagues,” Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese players find a space in leagues whose matches are mostly disputed within the numerous refugee camps scattered throughout the national territory. Moving from newcomers’ strategies for protection, the essay investigates how refugees living in camps experience different scales of mobility and develop a wide range of practices that extend beyond the camp's boundaries, exploring how imperceptible and hyper-mobile tactics of existence re-elaborate Palestinian refugee camps into meaningful places of elusive contestation.","PeriodicalId":21066,"journal":{"name":"Review of Middle East Studies","volume":"54 1","pages":"234 - 251"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1017/rms.2021.26","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42283320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking these two locations as historical epicenters of human, commodity, and capital mobility, in two connected regions, these conferences set out to interrogate the historical, social, and religious underpinnings of the migrant and refugee crisis in order to position this moment as a state of emergence, rather than a state of emergency. The focus of the essays included here explores pluralism as it has emerged in response to contemporary global crises, and asks a number of questions: What are the variations in how “pluralism” is understood, and how does it function in a time of crisis? What are the material and immaterial modes through which pluralism takes shape? Moreover, how does it change through the circulation of people - as migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers – and capital – whether under the auspices of international development funds, religious aid, or new labor markets? By crossing disciplinary boundaries, this special issue enters into a fundamental discussion about how “pluralism” is conceived across sites and offers new vistas for its conceptualization in North Africa and the Middle East.","PeriodicalId":21066,"journal":{"name":"Review of Middle East Studies","volume":"54 1","pages":"162 - 173"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1017/rms.2021.11","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42140487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the past few decades, a variety of publications on modern and contemporary art from the Arab world and its diasporas has appeared in art magazines, journals, and exhibition and auction catalogues. There is, however, still a lack of scholarly literature and reliable resources on the subject. Many such existing sources have focused on productions that are largely in line with certain interests or agendas pursued by the particular magazine/journal, exhibition, or art market in question. Therefore, although recent scholarly output has played a crucial role in introducing modern art in the Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa, these publications have not sufficiently filled the gap of discussion regarding certain aspects of the subject. Modern Art in the Arab World, a collection of critical writings by Arab intellectuals and artists, offers an unparalleled source for the study of modernism in the Arab world. Mapping the primary documents with additional entries written by the editors and other scholars, this book addresses the major historical, conceptual, theoretical, and aesthetic issues that inform the modern art paradigm in the Arab world. Arranged largely in a chronological order, it explores the art of the Arab world by tracing the main discourses that have shaped artistic practices and transformations in the region from the mid-nineteenth century until the late 1980s.","PeriodicalId":21066,"journal":{"name":"Review of Middle East Studies","volume":"54 1","pages":"342 - 351"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1017/rms.2021.4","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44013675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
