Architects may choose from a wide variety of implementation technologies to realize their envisioned software architecture. Each asset provides the ability to fulfill a set of requirements, and imposes a set of constraints. Given these complex compatibility relationships, it is a non-trivial task to determine how best to utilize candidate assets toward a defined business problem. This task is made harder when multiple stakeholders from various backgrounds contribute to the decision-making process, as often occurs in large projects.By grouping requirements by functional area, and relating them to corresponding candidate technologies, we propose an approach that allows stakeholders to collaboratively reason about the satisfaction of requirements, the compatibility of technologies, and integration risk. The goal is to narrow the initial space of technologies to a smaller number of viable candidate technology sets.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"115 1-4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114045970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of incompatible services, a 'mediator' may be introduced which resolves (semantic) interoperability problems by intervening in the cooperation between systems. Building mediators is currently often a manual process, resulting in dedicated IT-driven solutions. This paper presents a framework to guide the development of mediators, with the following objectives: (i) uncover and capture the actual interoperability problem that needs to be solved; (ii) allow the involvement of non-IT (i.e., business) experts in the development of the solution; (iii) support evolution of the solution and re-use of results in case of changing interoperability requirements; (iv) facilitate automation of parts of the process. The framework is based on service-oriented, model-driven and semantic Web techniques. Available tool support for the different steps in the framework is indicated.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"63 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132340492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

BPEL processes Web service orchestrations, business functions therefore can be transparently accessed remotely, allowing to build composite applications that integrate business functions provided by different partners on different locations. As of today, execution of BPEL processes, i.e. the evaluation of the processes' control flow, is performed by a central workflow engine. In certain scenarios, such as complex collaborative cross-partner interactions, this approach of centralized workflow enactment leads to \"un-natural\" process models; process models that are not driven by the processes' original business goal but by infrastructural or organizational reasons. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach to enacting BPEL process control flow in a distributed, decentralized manner. We present the overall process lifecycle and give a detailed description of the underlying process model.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134030817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Coordination protocols that specify the defining orders of message passing are very important. The scale of e-Business grows with the advancement of technology, and the number of agents involved continues to increase. Specifying the coordination protocols for so many participating agents is a complex task. A coordination protocol composition approach reduces the complexity of specifying such a coordination protocol. It treats coordination protocols as individual parts and composes them to construct the intended protocols. However, existing approaches do not sufficiently reduce the complexity when a coordination protocol is composed several times, because too many configurations are required to specify a composition. A new approach is proposed that uses metadata to specify the compositions by specifying only one configuration. It can reduce the number of configurations when a coordination protocol is composed several times.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115193087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During their execution, workflows need to interact with users using a mechanism called dialogs to deliver information and collect input that is required for further decision-making in the workflows. Information delivery and input collection by enterprise workflows is often a time-sensitive matter. Thus, dialogs have to be communicated to users in a timely fashion, which necessitates sending dialogs to user communication endpoints that permit the recipients to quickly, effectively, and conveniently view the information and provide the requested feedback. The proliferation of communication devices and clients among enterprise users implies that the content and rendering of dialogs has to be tailored to a large number of endpoints and preferably by middleware. This customization poses several challenges to developing and maintaining a manageable, extensible, and flexible middleware mechanism for synthesizing dialogs from specific decision points in enterprise workflows. In this paper, we first describe the challenges associated with context-sensitive dialog synthesis. We discuss how we applied templatized model transformation techniques to automatically synthesize dialogs in enterprise workflows. We show how our templatized transformation approach supports the evolution of communication endpoints and system requirements with a minimum of downtime and invasive design changes. We demonstrate our approach in the context of a representative enterprise case study.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130567267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To solve this problem, we propose a method dedicated to telecom service development, called EA4UP method. The first EA4UP characteristic is the use of the Enterprise Architecture (EA) for the design activity. The EA promotes component reusing, and improves development process continuity thanks to a Model Driven Engineering approach. In this new method, EA enforces the transformation of an analysis model into a design model. The second EA4UP characteristic is to place functions in the core of the method (instead of data). The assessments of eleven projects allow to measure profits of this EA4UP method with regard to the previous ones.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121460522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most such standards are composed of business data models with some message exchange patterns. Such data-only standards leave a very large interpretation space for the implementation stage at each individual organization. Thus, true industry-wide interoperability is still hard to achieve. In this industry report, we describe our experiences in creating and evaluating reference architectures for the Australian lending industry. To achieve the right level of prescriptiveness, our reference architectures are deliberately non-structural. Instead, they are based on a set of quality-centric architectural rules. We devised new methods for analyzing interoperability and evaluating such industry-level reference architectures. The first reference architecture has now been adopted and achieved positive effects. We also summarize several other lessons we learned, such as the need to align reference architectures with industry structures.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126104464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The properties are expressed in LTL-FO+, an extension to traditional Linear Temporal Logic that includes full first-order quantification over the data inside a trace of XML messages. The algorithm works \"on-the-fly\": it keeps in memory only the states that are necessary at each step. We maintain that a better quality of decisions can be obtained by exploiting not only quantitative information but also qualitative information and expert knowledge. Here we present a system able to classify the quality of innovation plans of SMEs by exploiting both quantitative and qualitative knowledge embedded in ontology. The ontological approach allows representing qualitative knowledge in a very natural way and, as a consequence, we are able to elicit it by means that are natural for SME officers, as for example questionnaires.","PeriodicalId":210496,"journal":{"name":"2008 12th International IEEE Enterprise Distributed Object Computing Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124208609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
