Taking up Nelson-Greenberg’s question as a challenge, I consider how anger operates in our particularly tense and uncertain moment. After all, what is anger? Should it be considered a trait—part of an individual’s inherent personality revealed through their thoughts and actions? Or a state—a temporary condition that individuals experience for a short time before transitioning to a different condition (“Difference”)? What might it mean to “feel” anger? What sensations, reactions, or impulses do we associate with anger? And whose anger do we justify?","PeriodicalId":209215,"journal":{"name":"Theatre Topics","volume":"1 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132836956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, my acting classes are populated mostly by sixteento twenty-year-olds. Occasionally a returning veteran will give the class a try, as do students of a certain age. Rarely do I have a theatre major. This demographic is liberating in that I needn’t worry about training hopeful professional actors. I can explore a broad palette of training methodologies. I can play. But “play” in the context of an acting class must be meaningful for the students. Play needs to touch them deeply.","PeriodicalId":209215,"journal":{"name":"Theatre Topics","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126173828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides some useful insight into the theories of the body that underlie McCaw’s practices and their attempt to bring the training techniques of Stanislavski and Feldenkrais—rooted in an early twentieth-century understanding of behavioral psychology—in line with contemporary understandings of neurological processes. In undertaking such a project, McCaw also places the book in dialogue with other attempts to define the relationship between the actor’s work and the physical operation of the human brain such as Rhonda Blair’s The Actor, Image, and Action: Acting and Cognitive Neuroscience (2008). Blair argues that there are significant gaps between the techniques actors use to create representations of action onstage and the cognitive processes that actually underlie human behavior. For Blair, those gaps are useful in creating performances that the spectator’s brain can easily interpret. Conversely, McCaw contends that these gaps are not so great and that actor training should be working to bridge what remains of them.","PeriodicalId":209215,"journal":{"name":"Theatre Topics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114454440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even as my colleagues and I had come to recognize the ways that modes like \"Zoom theatre\" had, in a very short time, become crucial instruments \"for theatrical institutions to make performances they [could] sell, as a way to keep themselves, their staffs, and their performers alive during the pandemic,\" there were brewing concerns about what engaging with these technologies might mean for the future of the profession, our approaches to theatre education and pedagogy, and the vitality and viability of the art form (184). The havoc that physical distancing and social isolation were wreaking on students' mental health and well-being had already become a source of concern for us. In an essay written for the site's \"Devising Our Future\" series, which was launched in the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis and the global protests against anti-Black racism and police violence spurred by the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, projection designer and director Jared Mezzocchi made a passionate case for theatre-makers to welcome the opportunities that working in new digital and virtual modes afforded them to experiment with different aesthetic strategies and practices.","PeriodicalId":209215,"journal":{"name":"Theatre Topics","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116097080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
