Unfortunately, if a customer considers that personal discomfort outweighs money savings after DLC shutting down of home appliances, DLC solution can be rejected. This paper proposes the way to remediate customer comfort concerns by pre-storing additional energy in electric loads before their disconnection from the grid. We take electric tank water heaters as an illustrative example of residential loads with storage. To illuminate our approach we first show how to balance electric consumption for pre-storing with user thermal discomfort for a single water heater. Then, we illustrate how the approach can be scaled-up to a multiple-boiler scenario, when ten remotely controlled boilers act next to fifty non-controlled boilers. The simulations for the latter case show that the expected user thermal discomfort can be significantly reduced at the cost of a reasonable increase of electricity demand preceding DLC event.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115421309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While EV recharging represents a considerable extra load on the grid, they also offer new opportunities in terms of consumption flexibility. In this paper, we use the recharging process of EVs to provide regulation to the grid by varying the instantaneous recharging power. We provide an economic analysis of the incentives at play, including the EV owners point of view (longer recharging durations and impact on battery lifetime versus cheaper energy) and the aggregator point of view (revenues from recharging versus regulation gains). In particular, we analyze the range of regulation rewards such that offering a regulation-oriented recharging benefits both EV owners and the aggregator. Interestingly, we observe that under current market conditions in France, an aggregator could offer regulating EV owners to recharge for 50% cheaper, and still be better off than offering only constant-power recharging.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"167 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115693053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discipline of asset management has now aggravated to the point, where key principles of good practice have been embodied in the international standard ISO55000:2014, with many mature organizations, nowadays, seeking to align their procedures and practices to obtain certification to this standard. However, it is our personal observation that many organizations, particularly, those of smaller size or those quite nascent to these principles of asset management can attain a lot of benefits, by applying these principles without formally implementing systems in accordance with the international standards. This paper discusses four key principles of asset management, and two asset management tools that have been found beneficial to electricity distribution utilities globally. Two supporting cases from Malaysia and Thailand are also discussed, where Malaysia TNB Distribution system is used as the knowledge base to confront the potential improvement of network reliability in electric power system network of Thailand through effective asset management strategy.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125212053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel control scheme to defuse such an interaction just by adding notch filters (NF) to DFIG controllers. Two specific schemes are developed. One is to embed a NF into its d-axis channel in the inner current loop of rotor-side converter (RSC) controller. The other is to add a NF to its q-axis channel. They are then applied to a practical series-compensated DFIG-based wind power system for performance verification. Eigenvalue analysis and time-domain simulation have been conducted to investigate their effectiveness. The results show that they both can significantly enhance the damping and guarantee SSR stability without affecting the normal operation of DFIGs. Moreover, it is discovered that the first scheme can provide better damping than the second one.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124880592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A low cost solution is discussed that uses simple electronics and algorithms to interpret ultra-high frequency (UHF) signals as a combination of external noise, asymmetric partial discharge (such as corona and other surface discharges), and symmetric partial discharge. The paper describes a device using three UHF frequency bands and a logarithmic detector to provide baseband signal to a digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP employs discrete Fourier transform (DFT) methods to obtain a rapid and succinct quantification of the contribution to the UHF signal from noise sources vs. surface and internal discharge activity. While UHF methods cannot be calibrated in the sense of IEC60270, an apparatus and method for normalizing the response of in situ systems is discussed.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126784378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Secondary substation also plays significant role in the future smart grid and can participate in Smart Metering process. Reliable smart grid operation requires authentic metering data. Thus, Smart Metering data communication in Secondary substation must be protected against cyber-security attacks. This paper discusses Smart Metering architecture and security requirements, and then proposes utilization of the Secondary substation automation device for secure transmission of metering data from customer site to distribution network control center. The Secondary substation automation device provides security for communicating to customer site and control center via DLMS/COSEM security mechanisms and tunneled IEC 60870-5-104 data in PPTP VPN, respectively. Accordingly, customer metering data is securely transmitted to higher level information systems of the utility company via Secondary substation.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"891 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116174681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed tool could be used to solve recloser-fuse miscoordination problems based on fuse-saving principles. Moreover, it can increase power transfer capability from DG to load by changing the time dial of the recloser and fuse size simultaneously. This tool was developed by writing DIgSILENT Programing Language (DPL) script in DIgSILENT PowerFactory software by considering many conditions such as fault locations, DG types, DG locations and DG sizes. The proposed tool has been implemented in the currently functioning 22 kV Mae Sariang distribution system of the Provincial Electricity Authority of Thailand (PEA). The test results showed that the proposed tool could be used to improve recloser-fuse coordination with a suitable recloser time dial and fuse size, resulting in the maximum capacity of DG connected at any location in the distribution system.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116408916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The saturation onset detector is used to monitor the occurrence of saturation and then trigger the positive/negative segmentation detector, which are designed to locate the starting point and the ending point of CT saturation. The saturation segments are determined by combined the output of the two segmentation detectors. Simulation studies are conducted in PSCAD/EMTDC to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Compared with conventional dispatch, the stochastic dispatch fully considers the variation of distributed load variations in the grid between dispatch intervals. The objective function of the stochastic dispatch scheme aims to minimize the distribution of fuel cost rather than a single value. Due to the stochastic analysis, the computational complexity of proposed method is also significantly increased. Therefore, this research adopts a animal behavior inspired algorithm, Group Search Optimizer (GSO) to solve the stochastic dispatch. The simulation studies are taken on the IEEE 30-bus system with uncertain load. The comparison between the results achieved using the proposed method and GA and PSO is presented to demonstrate the merits of GSO.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123630169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This may complicate their utilization in a frequency containment process if the power system does not have a proper strategy to coordinate and maintain the system frequency. In this paper, we examine the resources provided by refrigerators and BESS, and argue that with proper frequency coordination the contribution of these resources to frequency containment reserves (FCR) can be improved. Two distinctive cases are compared: one where the power system has an automatic process for frequency restoration and the other where such a process does not exist. In the latter case, the resources need to cope with the long lasting frequency deviations locally. The study is based on the simulation of different control strategies and the frequency measured in the Nordic power system. The results indicate that a proper frequency restoration strategy can enhance the potential of distributed resources as FCR.","PeriodicalId":208739,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114211009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
