The first anxiety disorder episodes emerge during childhood, while the first depression episodes more typically emerge in adolescence. Such early episodes are highly predictive for lifespan developments. This chapter reviews literature on dynamic system perspectives on anxiety and depression across scales of temporal resolution, from affect and highly contextualized emotion episodes to more persistent moods that evaluate the world as a whole, and the personality traits anxiety and depression that capture thematic recurrences of feelings, thoughts and behavior along the lifespan and how people talk about themselves. These various processes are intimately connected via their self-organizing and dynamic nature and circular causality, which demonstrates how dynamic system perspectives can help us to understand anxiety and depression across the lifespan.","PeriodicalId":208082,"journal":{"name":"Psychosocial Development in Adolescence","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115059483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The nature of adolescents’ real-time self-esteem from a dynamic systems perspective","authors":"N. D. Ruiter","doi":"10.4324/9781315165844-6","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4324/9781315165844-6","url":null,"abstract":"From a Dynamic Systems perspective, real-time processes are the building blocks for long-term development. While the long-term development of self-esteem has frequently been researched, few studies have examined the real-time processes of self-esteem. Moreover, the studies that have done so have not considered the socially-embedded nature of self-esteem, while classic studies have shown that this is an important characteristic of self-esteem. The aim of this chapter is to extend our current theoretical approach to real-time processes of self-esteem by emphasizing the role of the immediate social environment. This is formalized in the Socially Embedded Self-Esteem model, and in the specific context of adolescence and the role of parents. The model describes how real-time components of adolescents’ self-esteem and crucial parental behaviours interact across real time, and that this ongoing process results in the self-organization of Socially Embedded Self-Esteem attractors. The chapter provides an empirical illustration of such a system, and the socially embedded self-esteem attractors that can be observed. Aside from demonstrating the key points of the model, the case study also illustrates that empirically examining the Socially Embedded Self-Esteem system in real time makes it possible to examine whether group-based associations between parental behavior and adolescent self-esteem hold at the level of the individual dyad and the real-time timescale.","PeriodicalId":208082,"journal":{"name":"Psychosocial Development in Adolescence","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123519007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
