Peltonen","doi":"10.1109/EUMA.2001.339058","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/EUMA.2001.339058","url":null,"abstract":"Through careful dimensioning, avoidance of line transition discontinuities and by using special blocking elements to reduce stray couplings across the internal airgap together with inductive fine-tuning posts, a conventional ring hybrid can be an attractive RF power combiner for L- or S-band transceiver applications, where a high isolation is desired between the transmitter output arrangement and the receiving front-end, or for antenna arrays. When typical commercial units hardly exceed 40 dB, an improved narrow-band isolation up to 90 dB and more is demonstrated here while keeping the residual attenuation for desired coupling below 0.15 dB. Suitable filter topologies have been investigated, which allow having the filter passband either above or below the filter stopband. A design procedure, originally developed for waveguide single-sided filters, has been adapted also for this class of filters; the designed filters exhibit a quasi equiripple response both in the passband and in the stopband. It allows for the simultaneous reconstruction of real and imaginary parts of the permittivity and is applicable to strong scatterers and media with losses as high as in most biological tissues. The method is based on the spectral expansion of the permittivity function in the material under test. Availability is demonstrated on simulation results and actual measurement data. The necessary adaptations and the application of the new method in non-TEM structures such as waveguides are described and verified. This article discusses about the radiofrequency unit (RFU) which plays a major role for the stringent performances of the altimeter. The compact RF unit has been designed with a modular concept. It uses the new advanced technologies: extensively use of MMIC, pHemt LNA and hybrid HFET power amplifiers. The constant evelope modulation scheme of the GSM system allows the desing of high efficiency power amplifier, such as switching amplifiers. Among them. them, the Class-E amplifier concept is best suited, because it allows about 80% efficiency, while maintaining an excellent output spectrum and reasonable gain. Another advantage is the possibility to an a-priori design an characterization of the amplifier stage by simulation this fact is demonstrated in this paper, by comparing simulation and measurement results of a 45-MHz Class-E amplifier as a 1:20 frequency scaled model of a 900-MHz GSM power amplifier. We applied this technique to Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar to perform electronically beam scanning to detect angle information in addition to range and speed information of the target. A two-element coupled voltage controlled oscillator array with frequency modulation capability was constructed at 10.4GHz.
