We used high resolution (>20 points/m2) airborne laser scanning (ALS) data to derive four key characteristics for roadside trees at individual tree level. The tree level ALS point clouds were filtered with alpha shapes to exclude non-tree objects and measurements were taken directly from the filtered point clouds. The root mean square error (RMSE) of crown length and width, crown base height, and crown volume were 1.04 m, 0.68 m, 0.57 m, and 74.65 m3 respectively. The introduced method may be utilized in urban biomass estimations as well as monitoring the state and wellbeing of individual urban trees.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129839436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because of that, the literature favors approaches that make use of object-oriented analysis for image interpretation, those approaches make a better use of the high spatial resolution and do not use only the target spectral response. Assuming that the object-oriented analysis is a favorable approach to be employed for intra-urban image classification, this paper will assess the results of such approach through an implementation of it in an urbanized area from the city of Campinas (Brazil), which has a size close to twelve square kilometers. Making use of the fusion of high spatial resolution image from Worldview-2 sensor and it's panchromatic band, the experiments were performed with the use of eCognition Developer 8 as the segmentation platform, and the classification being based on a decision tree generated by J48 (C4.5) algorithm on the software WEKA. This work also assess which approach best suits the experiment needs, being an optimal attribute selection achieved through a Wrapper filter, with a final kappa statistic of 0.9425.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126226123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Urban sprawl is one of the phenomena that need to be controlled in order to ensure a sustainable development of communities. Satellite remote sensing provides a repository of Earth observations - and thus information on surface changes - since the early seventies. This research proposes a hybrid method applied to Landsat acquisitions for highlighting built-up areas and thus their changes, to estimate their age. The results as are also useful products in risk assessment and urban planning.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123418778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method exploits the relationship among adjacent pixels and integrates it into spectral information to obtain spectral-spatial classification. This framework consists of two steps. Firstly, a GP classifier (GPC) yields pixelwise predictive probability for each class. Secondly, an MRF is applied to extract spatial contextual information in the label map achieved in the first step. Then the classification results are inferred from the spectral-spatial information. By means of MRF regularization an enhanced classification result has been obtained. The experiments are performed on three hyperspectral benchmark datasets. The results from the GPC are compared with those obtained by state-of-the-art classification approaches and demonstrate that, GP model is a competitive tool for classification of HSI in terms of accuracy. Furthermore, the experimental results indicate that our proposed method GP-MRF improves the classification accuracy of conventional GPC.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"45 4-5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133004881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Beijing inner city contains a huge urban heritage composed of traditional courtyards (shiheyuans) and alleys (hutongs). Since the economic reform in 1978, Beijing as most of Chinese cities experiences a fast urbanization process and has to deal with the pressure of the real estate industry and historic preservation. Based on remote sensing images, we have developed a change detection method able to identify the construction of new high-rise buildings to the expense of the old districts. The results highlight the surface area of high-rise buildings has increased from 18% of Beijing inner city to 60% between 1966 and 2010. This study brings out both methodological and thematic interests: the efficiency of the proposed remote sensing approach to process heterogeneous remote sensing images and the Beijing urban transformation to the expense of the old districts.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"151 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122041318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This restriction leads to the rejection of numerous persistent scatterer (PS) candidates, particularly in urban areas where layovers occur frequently. Moreover, in case of high-rise buildings, it is necessary to compensate the phase associated with thermal expansion in an iterative way. It is worthwhile to approach tomographic techniques to address these concerns. SAR tomography has the potential to separate scatterers in elevation, thus resolving layover. Differential SAR tomography additionally allows retrieval of deformation parameters, including a possible thermal expansion term. In this paper, we investigate the combined use of SAR tomographic approaches and PSI for elevation and deformation estimation. Results are presented for an interferometric time-series of 50 TerraSAR-X stripmap images acquired over Barcelona city. Spatio-temporal inversion of scatterers along the façade of a high-rise building is presented as a special case.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125172540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In spite of significant research efforts this problem remains largely open. In our work we attempt to leverage context at two different levels to extract accurate and topologically correct road networks. Local context, in the form of powerful features extracted from large neighborhoods, exploits the layout of road pixels and their co-occurrence with visual patterns along the roads. Global context enforces the connectivity of roads in a network, by grouping individual pixels into longer road segments, modeled as large higher-order cliques in a Conditional Random Field. Here, we evaluate different ways of defining these cliques. It turns out that, with modern probabilistic inference techniques, using a smaller number of very large cliques is more efficient than splitting them into a larger number of shorter segments.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133208897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NDVI time-series data derived from HJ 1A/B time series imagery (HJ NDVI) have relatively high spatio-temporal resolution. In this research, HJ NDVI time series of typical vegetation types in the city of Nanjing are established, the S-G filter is chosen to filtering. Taking filtered HJ NDVI time-series data as “simulated Hyperspectral data”, the linear spectral mixture unmixing algorithm is used to carry out vegetation mapping. The results indicate that unmixing algorithm of linear spectral mixture model can obtain the distribution information of the five kinds of vegetation sub-classes including shrub, grassland, evergreen needle forest, broad-leaved deciduous forest, evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest in the research area.","PeriodicalId":207233,"journal":{"name":"2015 Joint Urban Remote Sensing Event (JURSE)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117162394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
