The chapter begins with a delineation of criminology as an academic discipline and crime as a contested concept. Narrative vs. non-narrative distinguishes narrative representation from the various forms of non-narrative representation and identifies two types of narrative representation: minimal narratives and exemplary narratives. Fiction vs. non-fiction begins by differentiating ‘fiction’ from ‘narrative’ and then draws attention to the problems with differentiating fiction from non-fiction in terms of either the imagination, invention, or falsity. The chapter defines fiction in terms of a practice, which unites a particular kind of creative utterance to a particular kind of receptive stance. The chapter concludes with an extended abstract of the book.","PeriodicalId":207189,"journal":{"name":"A Criminology Of Narrative Fiction","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124214354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chapter opens with an extended example, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006), which demonstrates the way in which the three aetiological values – phenomenological, counterfactual, and mimetic – typically interact in a single narrative fiction. The chapter then summarises my literature review (chapters two and three), my argument for the aetiological values of narrative fiction (chapters four, five, and six), and my exploration of the pedagogic value of narrative fiction (chapter seven). The chapter concludes with an account of the omission of videogame narratives from the criminology of narrative fiction, which is identified as an area for further research.","PeriodicalId":207189,"journal":{"name":"A Criminology Of Narrative Fiction","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116541619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chapter begins with an introduction to the cultural criminological framework, focusing on Nicole Rafter’s (2006) Shots in the Mirror. The chapter then discusses the critical realist framework in Vincenzo Ruggiero’s Crime in Literature (2003) and Jon Frauley’s Criminology, Deviance, and the Silver Screen (2010). The chapter distinguishes the criminology of narrative fiction from both the cultural criminological and critical realist frameworks on the basis that the latter two are concerned with the semiotic and pedagogic roles of fiction whereas the former is concerned with the aetiological role. The chapter concludes by distinguishing the criminology of narrative fiction from the author’s previous work.","PeriodicalId":207189,"journal":{"name":"A Criminology Of Narrative Fiction","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122931253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The chapter’ focus is on criminological cinema – Hollywood feature films that take crime or social harm or the control of crime or social harm as their subject – on the basis of the relevance of audience size to pedagogic value. Pedagogic value is a function of accessible communication and audience engagement and both of these features are enhanced by the characteristic realism of the cinematic mode of representation and the mythic storytelling characteristic of the Hollywood film industry. The chapter concludes with a demonstration of pedagogic value that employs Martin Brest’s Beverly Hills Cop (1984) as a case study.","PeriodicalId":207189,"journal":{"name":"A Criminology Of Narrative Fiction","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124746143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
