A Cu2S band running virtually across the entire width of the ingot suggests that it was formed by the reaction of molten Cu with antimonite (Sb2S3). Remarkably, the generated cutting surface was not copper-colored but had a silvery appearance which, however, can be attributed to the high Sb content. The metallographic examinations revealed a very inhomogeneous structural composition of the ingot. Large areas consist of dendritically solidified Cu, while the interdendritic areas are characterized by mixtures of different phases of the elements Cu-Sb-As-S.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85411613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What was common to all the examined slags was that their compositions, once converted and plotted on the FeO-SiO2-CaO phase diagram, were located at the phase boundary between olivine and wollastonite, resulting in melting temperatures of approx. 1100 °C for the slags. Slags with a composition which fall within the olivine region exhibit long, thin olivine crystals in a glassy matrix. Slags in the wollastonite region have a very fine-grained structure, making phase identification impossible. The copper-containing inclusions in the slag mainly consist of Fe-poor Cu2S, but FeO and SiO2 may also be present. General assertions about the local copper production in Acqua Fredda should not be made based on the slag analyses conducted in this study.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85245873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to plastic deformation of metastable austenitic steel, phase transformation from γ-austenite into α’-martensite occurs. This is initiated by the formation of shear bands as product of the external stresses. By means of coupled microscopic and micromagnetic investigations, a characterization of the microstructure was carried out. In particular, this study shows the distribution of the strain-induced α’-martensite and its influence on material properties like hardness at different depths. The microstructural analyses by means of electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique, evidence a higher amount of α’-martensite (ca. 23 %) close to the outer specimen surface, where the plastic deformation and the direct contact with the forming tool take place. In the middle area (ca. 1.5 mm depth from the outer surface), the portion of transformed α’-martensite drops to 7 % and in the inner surface to 2 %. These results are well correlated with microhardness and micromagnetic measurements at different depths. EBSD and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to make a detailed characterization of the topography and degree of deformation of the shear bands. Likewise, the mechanisms of nucleation of α’-martensite were discussed. This research contributes to the development of micromagnetic sensors to monitor the evolution of properties during flow forming. This makes them more suitable for closed-loop property control, which offers possibilities for an application-oriented and more efficient production.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86131783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The formation of segmented chips induces an alternating high frequency mechanical load on the tool and thus promotes tool failure. The presence of oxygen triggers a multitude of chemical interactions during the chip forming process. However, the oxygen content’s impact during titanium machining, especially on the chip formation, is unknown. In order to draw conclusions on this process, the machining tests were carried out while varying the oxygen content. The thus produced chips were metallographically examined. The varying degree of segmentation could then be visualized by boundary etching and subsequently be evaluated.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86018299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These images deserve to be made accessible to the general public. Within the project “Lumen & Colours: Faces of a city – a participatory project combining media art and urban design” funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation (German: Kulturstiftung des Bundes), the opportunity arose to map images recorded via light optical as well as scanning electron microscopy onto different building facades of the city. A selection of images from research and failure analysis conducted at the Institute for Silicon Technology (ISIT), for example, were projected onto the facade of the cleanroom. The appeal lies in the fact that an image is associated with a location, that matter is merged with imagination and natural sciences with art. On the cleanroom building, which is a work of art in itself as its structural design is modelled after a silicon wafer, the image and the facade merge to become one. Art and science are surprisingly close to each other. A new dimension is revealed on the huge 36-meter wide facade of the Fraunhofer ISIT by a giant video projector with a weight of around 100 kg and an output of 30 000 ANSI lumens. [1] Moreover, the images were animated and projected onto different buildings in the city as part of a virtual presentation. This contribution will explain the technical background of the images obtained in battery research and from the analysis of silicon wafers and solder joints and will show the different views offered by microscopic observation and how these images become one with different facades.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75986886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through detailed inspections of macro- and micro morphologies and the crack fracture, the fluorescent displays are fine cracks in nature, and the difference in morphology is related to the distribution of the fine cracks. The fine cracks should be shrinkage cracks in castings. The grinding force caused internal cracks to appear on the grinding surface.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77936561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An earlier fetal echocardiographic examination, performed at 205⁄7 weeks’ gestation, had normal findings. The mother had received prenatal care throughout her pregnancy, which was without complications or known risk factors. Antenatal screening studies were all normal. The mother’s medical history was unremarkable. She took multivitamins and ferrous sulfate regularly and denied ingestion or abuse of alcohol or illicit drugs. Family history was positive for a seizure disorder in a sibling of the mother. There was no family history of fetal death, cardiac or renal diseases, or mental retardation. On physical examination, multiple erythematous papules were noted over the mother’s nose and cheeks (Figure 2). The infant was born at term by spontaneous vaginal delivery. An echocardiographic examination confirmed a structurally normal heart with multiple cardiac tumors within both ventricles (Figure 3). Findings from Holter monitoring were unremarkable without the appearance of arrhythmias. Head and renal ultrasonographic examination results were normal, without evidence of tumors. A complete eye examination by an ophthalmologist and an examination of the infant’s skin revealed no abnormalities.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88972258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Test leaks are also used in non-destructive testing training to teach the staff how to detect these “invisible” leaks. The traditional production of test specimens with defined leakage, however, is timecon suming and expensive. In addition, these specimens are susceptible to impacts and can break easily. A new approach for producing robust specimens with defined leakage is gas dynamic cold spraying, or cold spraying, where a very small opening is closed using an open-pore metal powder filling. This manufacturing process is particularly suitable for industrial purposes due to the good controllability of the production process. Unlike traditionally manufactured glass bodies, the specimens produced in this way are less susceptible to mechanical impacts. The present study is concerned with the metallographic examination of porous coatings to create defined leaks using cold spraying.","PeriodicalId":20360,"journal":{"name":"Practical Metallography","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90041197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
