Their notable characteristics, including high mechanical strength, superior adhesiveness, exceptional water retention capacity, and antibacterial properties, offer innovative solutions for numerous challenges faced in the biomedical field. In this study, tannic acid (TA) was employed as a crosslinking agent, and mixed solutions of water and glycerol with different mass ratios were adopted, resulting in the successful synthesis of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/gelatin (GEL) organic hydrogel with remarkable mechanical properties. The incorporation of TA facilitates the formation of robust hydrogen bonds with the PVA chains, thereby enhancing the mechanical strength of the hydrogel. The maximum tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness value of the hydrogel are 2.5 MPa, 800%, and 1.1 MJ/m 3 . The lap shear adhesive performance test demonstrated that the hydrogel possesses excellent adhesion properties, capable of adhering to various substrates (with the highest adhesion strength observed on wood, reaching 76.8 kPa). Furthermore, the hydrogel can adhere to skin without leaving any residue upon removal. Results from in vitro coagulation tests revealed that the hydrogel fortified with TA effectively promotes blood coagulation on its surface. Antibacterial tests indicated that the TA‐containing organic hydrogel exhibits a significant inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus . Additionally, TA can be gradually released from the hydrogel into a phosphate‐buffered saline (PBS) solution. Consequently, TA‐loaded hydrogels hold promising potential for application as wound dressings.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"65 12","pages":"6890-6903"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147332127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Herein, PA6 nanocomposites were prepared via in situ ring‐opening polymerization using multi‐walled CNTs (MWCNTs) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a dispersant. By adjusting MWCNT content (0.1–0.5 wt.%) and PVP/CNT ratio, we elucidated the role of PVP in improving dispersion and interfacial compatibility. PVP enabled non‐covalent interactions (π‐π stacking and hydrogen bonding), leading to reduced CNT agglomeration and enhanced load transfer. Notably, the nanocomposite containing 0.3 wt.% MWCNTs and 0.3 wt.% PVP demonstrated the most balanced mechanical enhancement, achieving increases of 21.9% in tensile strength, 17.2% in tensile modulus, 15.8% in flexural strength, and 32.2% in impact strength compared to PA6. These improvements highlight the synergistic role of PVP in promoting nanotube dispersion and interfacial load transfer. Moreover, rheological analysis revealed a viscosity‐enhancing effect induced by the semi‐interconnected CNT‐PVP structure, which hindered molecular mobility and contributed to stress transfer across the interface. This work elucidates the molecular‐level mechanism of PVP‐assisted CNT dispersion in PA6 nanocomposites and highlights a scalable strategy for tailoring interfacial structures in CNT‐reinforced thermoplastics, offering valuable insights into the rational design of high‐performance nanocomposite systems.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"66 1","pages":"122-139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-10-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147331091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nonetheless, the development of flexible strain sensors with high sensitivity, high strength, and extensive strain range persists as a significant challenge in the field. In this study, polypyrrole (PPy) was uniformly coated on the surface of β‐alanine (Ala)‐modified epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) by in situ polymerization to prepare an A‐ENR‐g‐PPy composite with a core‐shell structure. The covalent bonding link between the polypyrrole and the epoxidized natural rubber helps to establish an effective conductive network within the epoxidized natural rubber matrix. As a result, the strain sensor has a fast response (153 ms) and excellent cycling stability (over 2000 cycles at 40% strain). The gauge factor (GF) is 5.4 for strain below 100%, reaching 6845.6 for strain above 550%. In addition, A‐ENR‐g‐PPy‐based flexible strain sensors can accurately monitor and differentiate between small and large body movements such as finger, wrist, elbow, and knee bending as well as mouth opening and blinking. This sensor shows great potential for applications in wearable flexible electronics.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"65 12","pages":"7057-7068"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147333241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The organofluoride monomer 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl acrylate (TFEA) was successfully grafted on microcrystalline cellulose‐based macromolecule chain transfer agent (MCC‐CTA) by RAFT polymerization and FTPE was prepared. The maximum thermal weight loss temperature of FTPE is 414.8°C under the synergistic action of the C–F bond. By changing the content of microcrystalline cellulose and acrylamide, the tensile strength of these fluorinated copolymers can be adjusted between 0.022 and 5.82 MPa, and their length can maintain a recovery rate of over 90% after multiple cycles. Meanwhile, owing to the soft rubber brushes in the side chains of MCC‐g‐P (AM‐ co ‐TFEA) and the strong cohesive force, the shear strength of the copolymer can reach 9.89 MPa when it is applied as a hot‐melt adhesive. This effective strategy can be further applied to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of bio‐based elastomer. Additionally, the design of brush topology and the adjustment of dynamic network structure can achieve better adhesion performance than the general acrylate adhesive, so as to seek to adapt to a broader application scenario.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"65 12","pages":"6904-6917"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147884548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While glycolysis is considered the most attractive chemical recycling strategy for waste PET, existing research faces persistent challenges including high temperatures, strong dependence on metal catalysts, and slow reaction rates. In this work, a low‐temperature, highly efficient metal‐free catalytic system was designed. Acetonitrile was employed as a cosolvent; the activation energy required for the reaction was effectively reduced, enabling the green and efficient depolymerization of waste PET bottles through optimizing the ethylene glycol/acetonitrile (EG/ACN) ratio. The results demonstrated that this catalytic system attained 99.9% PET conversion at just 130°C within 3 h, yielding 81% crystalline bis(2‐hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) with 97% purity. Furthermore, the use of an organic base catalyst eliminated metal contamination, further enhancing product quality. Consequently, this catalytic system simultaneously fulfills the requirements of low‐temperature, high efficiency, and metal‐free conditions, exhibiting substantial potential for industrial‐scale applications.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"65 12","pages":"6693-6704"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147895805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Xylan nanoparticles with an average particle size of 500 nm were extracted from a biomass resource, corn kernel, by secondary alkali treatment. Hyperbranched polymers with terminal hydroxyl groups (HBP‐OH) were synthesized using maleic anhydride and diethanolamine in a “one‐step melting method”. New reactive functional groups were introduced on the hydroxyl group of HBP‐OH by a quaternization reaction. The successful preparation of the quaternary ammonium cationic hyperbranched polymer (HBP‐L) was demonstrated by IR and 1 HNMR. Cross‐linking of HBP‐L with xylan nanoparticles via glutaraldehyde conferred new antifungal properties to the xylan nanoparticles. Infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic hydrogen spectroscopy proved the attachment of the polymer to the nanoparticles. The synthesized antifungal agent showed class I inhibition of both fungi, with weight loss reduced to 5%. The innovative application of modified nano‐xylan in wood provides new ideas for the commercialization of polysaccharide‐based antifungal agents.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"65 11","pages":"6332-6344"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147883179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since most conventional polymer microspheres and preformed gel particles have limitations in long‐term plugging of large pores and fractures, this study proposes a novel re‐crosslinkable calcium alginate (CaAlg) polymer microsphere system, which dynamically enhances the plugging performance by embedding glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE). The microsphere triggers a ring‐opening addition reaction between GTE and polyethyleneimine (PEI) in the PEI solution, rapidly forming an integral gel, which significantly enhances both plugging strength and longevity of large pores and fractures. Re‐crosslinking time can be controlled by adjusting the injection timing of PEI to achieve dynamic optimization of plugging. Effects of temperature, PEI concentration, and salinity on microsphere re‐crosslinking behavior and gel mechanical properties were experimentally investigated. Size distribution, chemical structure, and micro‐morphology of the microspheres are characterized by laser particle size analyzer, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The re‐crosslinked gel achieves a plugging efficiency of up to 91% and reaches significantly higher plugging pressure compared to the original microspheres. The gel also effectively redirects fluid flow paths, thus expanding the swept range, which is proved by dye tracer experiments. The mechanism of re‐crosslinking and the principle of plugging are further revealed by molecular simulation and Zeta potential analysis. The microspheres have desirable injectability, salt tolerance, and plugging strength. Furthermore, the re‐crosslinking process is controllable, which means flexible operations during field application. As a result, this re‐crosslinkable microsphere system offers an efficient solution for plugging fractures in high‐salinity reservoirs and has broad applicability and significant engineering value.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"65 11","pages":"6152-6168"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147912491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many requirements to adhere to high and low polar interfaces simultaneously. In this work, a high polar epoxy resin, N , N ‐bis(4‐(oxiran‐2‐ylmethoxy) phenyl) adipamide (BOYPA), was designed and prepared. The relationship between the curing temperature and the curing time and the curing reaction kinetics equations of BOYPA and Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) with diethylenetriamine (DETA) was clarified by the study of the curing kinetics according to the Kissinger equation and the Crane equation. Compared with DGEBA, BOYPA required higher curing activation energy and had a lower curing reaction rate. The curing reaction of BOYPA and DGEBA was both a simple curing reaction. Moreover, the peel strength between the PP film and PA6 board bonded by the mixture of BOYPA and DGEBA could be obviously enhanced with the increase of BOYPA content due to the proper polarity and the formation of hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, the impact strength of the mixture of BOYPA and DGEBA was significantly improved because of the good toughness of BOYPA. As a result, this work provided a simple method for regulating the bonding properties of epoxy adhesive for different adherent surfaces.","PeriodicalId":20281,"journal":{"name":"Polymer Engineering and Science","volume":"65 11","pages":"6073-6089"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147333438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
