In the present study, we attempt to apply scheduling with error rate consideration as an alternative method by which to realize a comparable TCP performance to HARQ with PC. Scheduling with error rate consideration introduces the transmission failure possibility (error rate) in order to modify the existing channel-aware scheduling schemes to avoid high-risk transmissions, and thus improves TCP performance. Simulations show that scheduling with error rate consideration can realize a TCP performance comparable to HARQ with PC when no user continuously experiences a nearly zero successful transmission possibility environment. Moreover, it is shown herein that a synergistic improvement can be achieved by applying scheduling with error rate consideration to HARQ with PC","PeriodicalId":202819,"journal":{"name":"Fourth European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN'07)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114881606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because IEEE 802.16e supports five classes of service as well as mobility, an admission control policy for non-preprovisioned service flow is proposed. This policy is compatible with the QoS parameters for each service class defined in the standard. As improvements, the guard channel scheme is used to give handover connections higher priority and a novel proportional bandwidth-borrowing scheme is added to prioritize the different service classes. The simulation results show the proposed admission control policy maximizes the bandwidth utilization and the use of the two schemes provides a reasonable priority order of new originated connections and handover connections of different service classes. The connection-blocking and connection-dropping probabilities were reduced to the extent that they can be ignored","PeriodicalId":202819,"journal":{"name":"Fourth European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN'07)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129078160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Internet uniquely provides the benefit of scalable, dynamic group communication services, vitally aiding commonly limited mobile terminals. The traditional Internet approach of any source multicast (ASM) routing, though, remains hesitant to spread beyond limited, controlled environments. It is widely believed that simpler and more selective mechanisms for group distribution in source specific multicast (SSM) will globally disseminate to many users of multicast infrastructure and services. Mobility management for the recent SSM standard is under debate - SSM group session initiation up until now remains unsupported by the session initiation protocol (SIP). In this paper we present straight forward extensions to SIP for negotiating SSM sessions. SIP protocol specifications and semantic are compatibly extended without adding new SIP methods. We will introduce a multimedia communication software with distributed architecture as implementation reference. Furthermore mobility management of the underlying routing layer is discussed and evaluated on grounds of real-world Internet topologies","PeriodicalId":202819,"journal":{"name":"Fourth European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN'07)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132229467","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such situations violate the anonymity of users. In this paper, we introduce an improved user identity confidentiality (IUIC) mechanism which attempts to avoid the drawback and makes users more anonymous. We give the role of IMSI to anonymous tickets in such a way that IMSI is never exposed on the radio interface or over any other link. Our IUIC mechanism employs symmetric cryptography based on the existing network access security features of UMTS. Since MBAC relies on measurements, the actual performance of MBAC can only be established through simulations or on real networks. There are two main performance measures: 1) how well the MBAC can actually meet the QoS target specified by a flow; and 2) how well the MBAC can utilize the network resources. The main work in the literature has mostly been on finding optimal MBAC algorithms that increase network utilization. In this simulation study we focus on an MBAC's ability to meet the QoS target under variations in the number of flow attempts within an interval and variations inflow lifetimes. We introduce an ideal admission controller based on analytical values and show the importance of using this ideal when assessing the performance of an MBAC. Most MBAC algorithms rely on tuning parameters to help in the decision making. Tuning these parameters is a difficult task, and a setting that gives excellent performance under one scenario, may give a very pessimistic or too optimistic performance in another scenario. We show that by adding two policies, the so called pessimistic policy together with a back-off policy, the reliance on tuning parameters diminishes. With these two policies in place we show that an MBAC can perform close to the ideal admission controller under various traffic loads without relying on explicit tuning parameters","PeriodicalId":202819,"journal":{"name":"Fourth European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN'07)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129941397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently there is a growing belief that putting an 802.11-like radio into road vehicles could help the drivers to travel more safely. Although research in this field is in preliminary stage, some simple implementations are quite promising; to the best of our knowledge there is no comprehensive feasibility study in the literature. So, as a first step, in this paper we investigate the feasibility of beacon safety message dissemination in VANETs through extensive simulation study. Vehicles are supposed to issue these massages periodically to announce other vehicles about their current situation and use received messages for preventing possible unsafe situations. We evaluate the performance of some simple protocols by the means of quality of service (QoS) metrics like delivery rate and delay and take special attention to reliability and fairness requirements of safety applications. Our results show in spite of global interest, safety applications in VANETs encounter severe challenges which should be addressed properly in the future research. We believe that to become a reality, this issue needs much more research, industry and government support","PeriodicalId":202819,"journal":{"name":"Fourth European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN'07)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126122693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its implementation is a key functionality of the distributed underlying infrastructures of both Web services frameworks and grid systems where searching and finding services are one of the main tasks. In the framework of sharing grid software resources, different discovery mechanisms have been evaluated. Grid solutions have been considered, together with industry-initiated methods, but the main hurdle for all methods is a lack of automation. In dealing with such WSDL-based services, the paper outlines the different methods in terms of the information model and searching tools. Moreover, to enable automation, it proposes an approach to introducing semantic technologies on the discovery process. Analyzing a Web service process and its actors, semantics could be added to the interactions between provider and client or directly to the broker. The former solution moves towards enriching Web service description by means of semantic languages. The second requires the modification of the broker responsible for the matching user requirements with the service capabilities offered by introducing new modules","PeriodicalId":202819,"journal":{"name":"Fourth European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN'07)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130490578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The success of IEEE 802.11 has cut down equipment costs and people are now building their own residential wireless networks, connecting PCs, MPS players, broadband gateways and Hi-Fi systems. However, such dramatic growth is creating problems in crowded areas, as the Wi-Fi bandwidth is limited and interference effects start to limit the technology usability. This paper describes a framework for managing the quality of the overall home wireless network, so that interference or bulk noise effects can be alleviated allowing users to enjoy digital content with the reliability they expect. By means of universal plug 'n play, events that may deteriorate the quality of existing services can be propagated to all interested devices so that a smart allocation of network resources can be applied. A pragmatic challenge in facilitating NGN is how to schedule traffic and allocate bandwidth among the triple-play services, namely voice (VoIP), video (IPTV) and data. Different from traditional strict-priority based scheduling intensively used in industry, in this paper, we try to discuss this issue from the objective of network utility maximization (NUM). We first investigate the characteristics of most existing traffic classes and explicitly formulate their utilities to be the function of occupied bandwidth. After that, a novel scheduling scheme to achieve NUM is derived using Lagrange method with KKT conditions. Numerical results under two network scenarios are calculated. Both of them reveal the unique nature of this scheduling, compared with strict-priority scheduling, still highest priority is provided for VoIP traffic, however, no strict priority should be given to IPTV traffic since it will conflict with NUM objective. We hope our results will shed lights on the evolvement towards the converged network","PeriodicalId":202819,"journal":{"name":"Fourth European Conference on Universal Multiservice Networks (ECUMN'07)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115057390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
