Due to their high reflectivity R, only a small part (1-R) of the incident light intensity Io is absorbed in the material. With regard to the optical detection, the experimental conditions are very similar to those of transparent materials, where PAS has become a promising technique. The present work is concerned with PA studies of the optical reflectivity of amorphous metallic compounds. Here we report on first results obtained at 10K and at room temperature from some metglasses and noble metals; the latter have been used as reference materials.","PeriodicalId":202661,"journal":{"name":"Second International Meeting on Photoacoustic Spectroscopy","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134224415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In that earlier work,1 we proposed a detailed theory, based on a numerical solution of the heat diffusion equation, to relate the microphone signal amplitude to collisional relaxation time. The theory was verified using mechanically chopped single frequency infrared laser radiation at moderate power levels and at suitable wavelengths for absorption by nitric oxide, a diatomic gas with known spectroscopic and thermochemical properties.1 In the present paper, we apply the theory to experiments on dry nitric acid vapor, a polyatomic gas with nine vibrational modes.2","PeriodicalId":202661,"journal":{"name":"Second International Meeting on Photoacoustic Spectroscopy","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117299223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both nonresonant [1] and resonant [2] cells have been used to achieve these detectivity limits. The limiting acoustic noise was about an order of magnitude above the Brownian noise of the ideal membrane inserted in the optoacoustic cell. The optoacoustic effect has also been used in liquids to measure low concentration traces [3] as well as ultralow absorption of visible radiation by pure water [4]. The noise equivalent concentration in liquids approached the ~ 10−11 limit.","PeriodicalId":202661,"journal":{"name":"Second International Meeting on Photoacoustic Spectroscopy","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115423627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic principles and the theory of the PA effect are now well established18–21). The primary source of the acoustic signal is the periodic heat flow from the sample to the surrounding gas, as the sample enclosed within a gas cell is cyclically heated by the absorption of chopped light. The periodic flow of this heat into the gas cell produces pressure fluctuations which are detected by a sensitive condenser microphone as an acoustic signal. The present research applies the technique of PA spectroscopy to the detection of the optical and infrared(IR) radiation itself. In PA energy conversion process, the thermal properties of the sample play an important role. Therefore this PA optical and IR detector can be classified as the thermal detector. The operation principle of this detector is different from those of presently available optical and IR detectors22-24). The sketch of PA optical and IR detector is shown in Fig. 1.","PeriodicalId":202661,"journal":{"name":"Second International Meeting on Photoacoustic Spectroscopy","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125943627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Quantitative Fourier Transform Infrared Photoacoustic Spectroscopy of Condensed Phases","authors":"Y. Teng, B. In making experimental measurements the photoacoustic cell contains the material to be studied and replaces the instrument’s detector. After suitable filtration to remove signal frequencies outside those inherent to the spectral range being studied, the cell output is processed by the standard electronics of the FTIR spectrometer. Because of the selective absorption of the sample in the photoacoustic cell the interferogram has an appearance normally associated with an emission spectrum. The spectral information is therefore distributed over a wide range of path length differences in the interferometer rather than being largely in the \"central burst\" feature of the interferogram. The selective absorption also means that not all the energy incident on the sample is absorbed and so the central burst is smaller in amplitude than the corresponding feature for a black body absorber. When the data contained in the interferogram is transformed to obtain an absorption spectrum the resulting peak heights are not in the ratios expected due to a number of artifacts introduced by the technique. This paper is concerned with a discussion of these artifacts and procedures that may be employed to remove them so as to obtain a quantitatively correct sample spectrum. Experimental results are presented on some polymeric systems.","PeriodicalId":202661,"journal":{"name":"Second International Meeting on Photoacoustic Spectroscopy","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131809947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
