Compared with a wireless network with a stationary infrastructure, such as a cellular network, an ad hoc network is inherently less efficient. Therefore, a number of proposals have been made to develop a quasi-stationary infrastructure for ad hoc networks. However, the dynamic nature of ad hoc networks makes it very costly to maintain such an infrastructure. The article proposes a vertex-linked infrastructure (VLI) for ad hoc networks. This novel approach uses an easily deployable, survivable, wired infrastructure as a backbone of the ad hoc network, thus realizing the advantages of an infrastructure in wireless communications, but without the overhead due to maintaining such an infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":201962,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE 15th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (IEEE Cat. The MC-MFSK is a new multiple-access technique with the desirable properties of frequency diversity and near-far resistance. The error performance of MC-MFSK system with the IIC-based MUD algorithm is studied over noise-free and Rayleigh fading channels. The capacity of a BAP is limited by the data rate and number of active slaves supported by each Bluetooth piconet. The paper presents a novel design of a high capacity BAP employing multiple transceivers to support several piconets, and a common baseband processor implementing a collision avoidance scheduling (CAS) algorithm to minimize the detrimental effects of interference between collocated piconets. The circuit has been designed using a 3.3 V 0.18/spl mu/m CMOS technology. The synthesizer consumes 55 mW of which 20 mW is consumed by the VCO. The PLL has a bandwidth of 100 KHz and a phase noise of -111 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency. The spurious sidebands at the center of adjacent channels are less than -70 dBc. Our MIMO channel simulation model is based on the so-called one-ring scattering model with two antennas at both the base station (BS) and the mobile station (MS) side. For the capacity study, we have investigated the influence of various model parameters, such as the angle spread at the MS, the mean angle of arrival (AOA), and the orientation of the antenna elements. The Doppler effect is also taken into account. Nonisotropic scattering around the MS is modelled by the von Mises distribution. The presented simulation results show an excellent correspondence between the statistical and the time average of the capacity. Furthermore, it turned out that a large distance between the antenna elements is not a guarantee for high capacity. It is interesting that a given application may be executed on any software radio. But, since hardware platforms used in this context will have multiple architectures and devices, a software layer to make applications independent from hardware is mandatory. Ad-hoc software for a given hardware platform may produce the best software performance. Conversely, when software is not targeted to any concrete platform the lost of performance may be excessive and the overhead introduced by any platform-dependent library could become intolerable. In this paper the resource utilization of a software radio application using a simple hardware abstraction layer is studied and compared to an ad-hoc implementation to make an assessment of the introduced overhead. This paper proposes its application on vessel's integrated bridges that are characterized by numerous internal cables. Bluetooth is well suited for this application due to the use of the unlicensed ISM frequency band, network support, sufficient transmission capacity, robustness by using FHSS modulation and adequate coverage, even for a large bridge of up to 50 m. The translation of a typical ship's cabling into an adopted Bluetooth network is presented. However, the receiver is very sensitive to IQ imbalances in particular for complex modulation techniques such as 64-QAM and above typically used for high data rate transmission. Conventionally, this IQ imbalance is only corrected at the receiver while the imbalance at the remote transmitter is assumed to be pre-corrected. However, aging, manufacturability, and temperature variations can be difficult to calibrate and can result in performance degradation (e.g., range reduction, etc.). We propose an adaptive scheme in the receiver to correct the IQ imbalances at the remote transmitter as well as the receiver. However, since multiple transmitters and receivers are required, a large number of channel emulators are also required for in-lab experiments, resulting in an increase in equipment cost. This paper describes an implementation of received signal generator for a 4/spl times/4 MIMO transmission in one FPGA chip which can be utilized as a real-time MIMO spatial multiplexing system test-bed.
