It articulates that the ability to follow public health advice is privileged and that this advice requires local contextualization, particularly in the Global South. It also covers two core arguments: first, that human capacity to adhere to public health advice is privileged; and second, that global public health advice requires local contextualization. The chapter identifies inequalities in the capacity of South Africa's population to comply with lockdowns and social distancing requirements. It demonstrates how COVID-19 highlights and exacerbates existing inequalities.","PeriodicalId":201569,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: Community and Society","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129500405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on the overcrowded conditions that migrants have to endure, especially if they reside in city centers close to jobs. It also equates contemporary responses to the COVID-19 pandemic among middle-class Malaysians to colonial European attitudes towards indigenous subjects. The chapter talks about the ten-kilometer radius that limited people's movements, which demonstrated the uneven distribution of resources and services. It describes Malaysia's intersection of medical practices and armed forces, marginalized communities and overcrowding, sanitation and the policing of space that are reminiscent of colonial methods of ordering space.","PeriodicalId":201569,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: Community and Society","volume":"165 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116030894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to empower, elevate, and amplify the voices and experiences of older adults through the production of the website wijencorona.nl, which collected their stories during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also reviews the 'intelligent' lockdown by the Dutch government, which is an approach to managing the pandemic that appealed to solidarity and self-discipline in order to comply with social distancing and staying at home. The chapter delves into the views of individuals aged 50 years and older that experienced COVID-19 in an urban or rural context. It uses the stories to discover opportunities for rural and urban futures.","PeriodicalId":201569,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: Community and Society","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133071904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It draws on the concept of social infrastructure to outline the ways in which the urban inequities of transgender and gender non-conforming people have changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also situates trans* people's urban inequities against the backdrop of UK austerity cuts that have undermined social infrastructures vital to LGBTQ communities. The chapter argues that pre-existing conditions caused trans* people to become disproportionately affected by the pandemic in terms of social infrastructures of health, community, and housing. It explains how social relations and invisible labor that underlie social infrastructures broke down during the onset of the pandemic, placing trans* people in a particularly precarious position.","PeriodicalId":201569,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: Community and Society","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117014578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides a detailed overview of the demographics, wages, benefits, and poverty living conditions of domestic workers, of whom 91.5 percent are women. It also reveals the disproportionate amount of care work that is carried out by ethnic minorities, immigrants, and women. The chapter highlights the complex relationship between employer–employee. It discusses some of the incredible work that non-for-profit organizations across US cities have undertaken in order to improve domestic employees' working conditions and advocate for better workers' rights.","PeriodicalId":201569,"journal":{"name":"Volume 1: Community and Society","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132986535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
