Subscribers to an IP multicast group are required to parse all messages even though they may only be interested in a small subset of the data. Middleware exists today that can perform all the functionality of the current radar surveillance data distribution system plus enhance the distribution by allowing filtering of data based on message content and time, restricting what data a subscriber can gain access to based on their current role, and allowing flexibility in how the data is sent (reliable versus best effort). This paper explores how Real Time Innovations Data Distribution Service (RTI DDS) can enhance the current distribution method for radar surveillance data. The results of the experiment showed that the current multicast distribution method can be enhanced by allowing both content and time filtering along with role based access. The ability to filter incoming data does not come for free. By exposing attributes,more network bandwidth is required. The generic data type used for this study increased the required bandwidth by a factor of two. Depending on the network bandwidth requirements, the published data type can be tailored accordingly.","PeriodicalId":201010,"journal":{"name":"2008 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134457948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A VDL Mode 2 protocol model has been developed to estimate the number of aircraft a ground station can support with varying traffic loads. This capacity, in conjunction with the expected aircraft density, determines the number of frequency channels and ground radio sites that will be needed to support various levels of future data communications services. From this analysis, the timeliness of the need for 8.33 kHz channelization for voice services, particularly with respect to the impacts of creation of a data communications subband within the VHF frequency band, is inferrred. This paper contains the details of the study and describes the ability of the FAA's current and planned communications infrastructure to meet the requirements of performance-based air traffic management and NextGen communications using the aeronautical VHF spectrum.","PeriodicalId":201010,"journal":{"name":"2008 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128562379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within the framework of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen), this evolution is envisioned to pave the way for reduced separation minima as a beneficial way to improve airspace capacity and operational efficiency. The development, approval, and validation of reduced separation standards that safely support future capacity gains require quantitative information of aircraft separations applied in actual operations that reflect the entirety of operational factors. This paper outlines the analysis capabilities developed for NAS-wide evaluations of aircraft separations observed in ATC surveillance data. It describes the analysis approach taken to enable quantitative comparisons and presents examples of evaluation results of terminal radar data recorded at key United States (US) airports. The comparisons illustrate characteristics of aircraft separations found in actual terminal operations and identify separation signatures that pinpoint geographic areas and altitudes where separation standards represent the most significant operational constraints.","PeriodicalId":201010,"journal":{"name":"2008 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129593586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional approaches for the evaluation of the re-designed procedures and training, such as expert reviews and human-in-the- loop tests, cannot provide comprehensive analysis, cannot be performed until after the procedures and training are developed, and are cost and time prohibitive. This paper describes the emergence of a new class of tools to automate the evaluation of procedures and training. The tools capture the procedures and tasks to be trained in a formal model that is stored in a data-base. Human performance models are executed to estimate the ease-of-learning, ease-of-use and likelihood of failure of each of the tasks. The procedures and tasks can be defined rapidly, and modified and run repeatedly throughout the development cycle. The underlying models and tools are described in this paper. A case study and the implications of these tools are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":201010,"journal":{"name":"2008 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114488232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, the weather is often presented independent of situation displays that support users of aviation systems. Unique displays, different systems, and a small set of weather products are used to depict current and forecasted weather data normally associated with flights and areas of interest on the situation display. Pilot briefing systems today typically feature data presented in a text-base or written format, while air traffic situation displays are typically presented as graphical or visual based weather data. This paper will present innovative examples of how to present traditional text weather on air traffic situation displays, and graphics based weather in pilot briefings.","PeriodicalId":201010,"journal":{"name":"2008 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116579786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Last decade has seen the emergence of independent applications or set of tools to address some of the asset management related functionalities. However, they handle tasks/activities in an independent manner and depend on other external systems/applications for critical data. The areas of equipment health management supported with advanced diagnostic features for prediction capabilities, empirical. / Statistical analysis based functionalities; close integration with the associated applications such as purchase information system etc. would make the asset management more effective. An optimized asset management and maintenance activity greatly enhances the overall productivity and operational efficiency of the airline industry. This paper describes the state of the technology in this area and proposes an integrated framework of the system along with a high level architecture of the same.","PeriodicalId":201010,"journal":{"name":"2008 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122556703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
