Here, we demonstrate a broadband LWIR laser covering 5.7–11.0 μm with 13 mW average power and 108 MHz repetition rate based on difference frequency generation (DFG) in a zinc germanium phosphide (ZGP) crystal. The laser can also be widely tuned over 4.6–11.0 μm with a maximum average power of 40 mW. The pump and signal pulses of DFG are generated from a broadband optical parametric oscillator (OPO) system pumped by a Yb-doped fiber laser. Absorption spectroscopy of an organic compound was demonstrated by the LWIR source. Furthermore, combining additional complex phase locking, it has the potential to achieve dual comb spectroscopy (DCS) for higher measurement speed and resolution. The adjustment-free LWIR lasers with instantaneous broadband spectra reduce system complexity and alignment difficulty, and they are desirable for sensitive parallel molecular spectroscopy and biological macromolecule detection.","PeriodicalId":20048,"journal":{"name":"Photonics Research","volume":"68 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":7.6,"publicationDate":"2025-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145397494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"物理与天体物理","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hydrogen-bonding network of water interacts strongly with terahertz (THz) radiation, making THz waves a sensitive probe for evaluating water content. However, THz measurements of water concentration rely on effective medium theories that treat the sample as a binary mixture of water and non-aqueous components. This approach requires precise knowledge of the dielectric properties of the non-aqueous phase, often necessitating destructive sample preparation or oversimplified assumptions, which limit the accuracy and applicability. In this work, we present a non-destructive method for highly accurate water-content quantification. The method exploits the distinct temperature dependencies of THz absorption in water and non-aqueous substances. Theoretical analysis reveals a simple correlation between the THz absorption-temperature slope and the water volume fraction. By measuring samples at down to two temperatures within a narrow range of less than 10°C, water concentration can be determined with high precision in vitro . We validated the method across various materials, including liquid solutions, hydrated solids, and biological tissues from plants and animals. The extracted water contents show excellent agreement with theoretical or reference values, demonstrating broad applicability across samples with diverse compositions and hydration levels.","PeriodicalId":20048,"journal":{"name":"Photonics Research","volume":"14 1","pages":"230-230"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147332921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"物理与天体物理","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional fluorescence microscopy allows for imaging of mitochondria selectively using fluorescent labeling, and consequently it suffers from phototoxicity and limited fluorescence channels. Quantitative phase contrast microscopy (QPCM) allows for imaging of tens of organelles in a label-free manner, yet it lacks the ability to distinguish specific organelles. In this work, we introduce an unsupervised deep learning model, entitled phase to fluorescence generative adversarial network (P2F-GAN). This model allows for virtual fluorescence labeling of mitochondria in QPCM images, eliminating the need for time-consuming paired training data acquisition. Utilizing an attention module and a customized loss function, P2F-GAN allows for virtual labeling of mitochondria (demonstrated as an example), achieving a structural similarity of 0.88, a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.86, and a Dice coefficient of 0.84. The capability of the method has been demonstrated for tracking mitochondria in both physiological conditions and pharmacological interventions. The proposed method can be extended to other subcellular structures and invites many applications.","PeriodicalId":20048,"journal":{"name":"Photonics Research","volume":"14 1","pages":"144-144"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147904301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"物理与天体物理","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the superhydrophobicity of gold leads to a pronounced coffee-ring effect during the evaporation of liquid samples, resulting in uneven distribution of biomolecules and weakened light–matter interactions. Herein, we present a metallic terahertz (THz) metasurface sensor whose metal array region is modified with ionic liquids (ILs), resulting in a reduction of the droplet contact angle from 105.7° to 39.4°. This indicates excellent hydrophilicity, which facilitates the uniform deposition of protein molecules on the surface. This strategy circumvents the conventional dependence on high quality ( Q ) factor resonances and delivers outstanding sensing performance. Specifically, under y -polarized THz excitation, the two resonance modes excited by the metasurface enable reliable qualitative and quantitative detection of various proteins. Among these modes, Mode II exhibited a direct limit of detection (LoD) of 0.03125 mg/mL for insulin. This work establishes a new paradigm for trace biomolecule sensing and provides valuable insights for future sensor innovations.","PeriodicalId":20048,"journal":{"name":"Photonics Research","volume":"14 1","pages":"11-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147909565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"物理与天体物理","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, TPFM volumetric imaging rates are typically low, limiting the ability to image whole cleared tissues and large surgical specimens. While innovations in TPFM technology, such as parallel-scanning, have drastically increased imaging speed, these improvements have typically focused on high frame rate, single field-of-view imaging rather than extending the area/volume imaging rate. In this work, we bridge the gap between high imaging speed and high area and volumetric imaging throughput by combining parallel scanning with tilted-plane strip-scanning using custom silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) tiled-array detectors. We demonstrate 200 MP/s with four spectral channels (800 MSpectra/s) and an effective area imaging speed of up to 52 mm<sup>2</sup>/s using four parallel beams. Custom detectors and lens array enable non-descanned imaging with minimal crosstalk combined with light collection efficiency comparable to a conventional single-point scanning TPFM. Finally, the low-cost of the custom detectors (~$250 per channel) and the scalability of the detection optics allow for ease of spectral multiplexing.</p>","PeriodicalId":20048,"journal":{"name":"Photonics Research","volume":"13 9","pages":"2704-2717"},"PeriodicalIF":7.1,"publicationDate":"2025-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12456228/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145138493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"物理与天体物理","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, which resolves molecular structures by detecting intra- and intermolecular vibrational modes, has been enhanced through the integration with metasurfaces, extending its applications in biomedical and security detection. However, current methods face significant challenges in trace analysis and broadband detection of analytes. Here, we propose a novel metasurface-based approach for detecting molecular broadband fingerprint spectra, combining the simplicity of state-of-the-art THz angle-scanning methods with the specificity of molecular fingerprinting. Specifically, we designed a guided mode resonance (GMR) metasurface capable of providing localized electromagnetic field enhancement and continuous spectra between 0.95 and 1.45 THz. We demonstrate the enhanced detection of intrinsic absorption features of glutamic acid enantiomers by correlating the molecular absorption spectra with the reflectance spectra at each incident angle. This angle-scanning approach simplifies the identification process and spectroscopic system, offering the potential for miniaturization and field deployment of THz spectroscopic devices for molecular detection.","PeriodicalId":20048,"journal":{"name":"Photonics Research","volume":"13 11","pages":"3102-3102"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147889090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"物理与天体物理","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, its broader biomedical application remains limited by the reduced hemoglobin absorption beyond 600 nm and the insufficient sensitivity of existing microscope probes. Here, we address these challenges through two key innovations. First, we develop a high-sensitivity acoustic-optical probe tailored for the SRS-based MW-OR-PAM system. The probe integrates a 9-μm-thick P(VDF-TrFE) film-based transducer between a planoconvex lens and a large-aperture acoustic lens, achieving a broad bandwidth (98.94%), a high numerical aperture (0.67), and adjustable optical focusing. Second, we introduce tartrazine, a biocompatible and tissue-transparent dye, to induce reversible optical clearing in vivo , thereby enhancing light penetration at wavelengths above 600 nm. These advances significantly improve microvascular imaging at longer wavelengths. We validate the performance of our system through high-resolution imaging of skin microvasculature, oxygen saturation mapping, and transcranial brain imaging. Our results establish MW-OR-PAM as a versatile and robust platform for functional and pathological imaging, effectively extending the spectral and penetration depth limitations of conventional OR-PAM systems in the red spectral region.","PeriodicalId":20048,"journal":{"name":"Photonics Research","volume":"13 10","pages":"2757-2757"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147334135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":1,"RegionCategory":"物理与天体物理","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, a flexible nanoplasmonic paper-based sensor based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was developed, in which silver nanoparticles were loaded in the cellulose paper to enhance the Raman signals of targets via the generation of SERS “hotspots.” By incorporating the filter paper channel with a natural core absorbing liquid, the multifunctional chip is formed, which integrates the collection, transmission, and detection of trace sweat. This paper-based chip is soft and stretchable, and fits perfectly onto the human skin surface without causing any damage or irritation. Combined with a hand-held Raman spectrometer, quantitative detection of multiple sweat components can be achieved with the limit of detection of 17 and 1 μmol/L for uric acid and glucose, respectively, and the measurable range is 4–7.5 for pH, enabling wearable and in-situ optical sensing for sweat markers under the condition of human physiology and pathology, within only 5 min for uric acid and glucose detection. Correcting scattering becomes particularly challenging in scenarios with limited photon availability and when access to the transmission side of the scattering tissue is not possible. Here, we introduce, to our knowledge, a new two-photon microscopy system with Fourier-domain intensity coupling for scattering correction (2P-FOCUS). 2P-FOCUS corrects scattering by intensity modulation in the Fourier domain, leveraging the nonlinearity of multiple-beam interference and two-photon excitation, eliminating the need for a guide star, iterative optimization, or measuring transmission or reflection matrices. 2P-FOCUS uses random patterns to probe scattering properties, combined with a single-shot algorithm to rapidly generate the correction mask. 2P-FOCUS can also correct scattering beyond the limitation of the memory effect by automatically customizing correction masks for each subregion in a large field-of-view. Unlike conventional approaches constrained by graphene’s intrinsic isotropy or complex nanoscale patterning, our design introduces asymmetric metal architectures (E-/T-type) to artificially create directional anisotropy. These structures generate plasmon-enhanced localized electric fields that selectively amplify photogenerated carrier momentum under polarized UV light (325 nm), synergized with Fowler-Nordheim tunneling (FNT) across an atomically thin Al 2 O 3 barrier. The result is a breakthrough in performance: a record anisotropy ratio of 115.5 (E-type, −2 V) and exceptional responsivity (97.7 A/W), surpassing existing graphene-based detectors by over an order of magnitude. Crucially, by systematically modulating metal geometry and density, we demonstrate a universal platform adaptable to diverse 2D/3D systems.
