A motor state observer has been implemented, which showed excellent performances, particularly at low speed operation. Two different experimental realizations have been developed, with rated powers equal to about 1.5 kW and 30 kW respectively, and good results have been obtained in both cases. The theoretical approach, the main design choices and the most significant experimental results are presented.","PeriodicalId":19979,"journal":{"name":"PESC Record. 27th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"15 1","pages":"1427-1433 vol.2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89977653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two motor phase windings are connected in series to form three nodes so that only six switches are required for controlling the bi-directional current flow in the windings. The control of current in each winding is coupled by the common node. Detailed design of the control strategy which allows PWM current regulation in each phase is developed. The power converter performance is assessed analytically and the proposed system is demonstrated by both simulation and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":19979,"journal":{"name":"PESC Record. 27th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"103 1","pages":"127-133 vol.1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87908950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is based on the observation of the waveforms during the failure which shows the evidence of the activation of parasitic bipolar transistor. This paper advances the hypothesis that the failure mechanism is strictly related to how this transistor is being activated during reverse recovery. In particular, for higher values of dI/sub D//dt, the bipolar parasitic transistor on small area of the chip is activated at the early beginning voltage rise. Device failure is then caused by the second breakdown of this transistor which takes place during its turn-off.","PeriodicalId":19979,"journal":{"name":"PESC Record. 27th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"593-599 vol.1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87495018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The converter offers a high power factor and high-frequency supply to the lamp using a single switch. In spite of its simplicity, an excellent performance concerning load and supply is achieved, ensuring a sinusoidal and in-phase supply current. High power factor is achieved by using a flyback converter operating in discontinuous-conduction mode. Operating principle, design equations, control characteristics, component stress, and efficiency are presented. Experimental results have been obtained for one 40 W fluorescent lamp operating at 50 kHz switching frequency and 127 V line voltage.","PeriodicalId":19979,"journal":{"name":"PESC Record. 27th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"1215-1220 vol.2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79222225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these post-regulators, only a part of the total power undergoes a switching conversion process, whereas the remainder of the power comes up to the load directly, with no power conversion process. Due to this fact, very high efficiency is achieved. Moreover, the stress in the semiconductors and the filter size are both much lower than in standard post-regulators. Two-input post-regulators require two-output main converters. However, many converter topologies can be easily adapted to supply two output voltages with no efficiency penalty. Two-input post-regulators can be used in many power converters. Multiple-output DC-to-DC converters and AC-to-DC power factor correctors are two good examples.","PeriodicalId":19979,"journal":{"name":"PESC Record. 27th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"39 1","pages":"874-880 vol.1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79882973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first part of the paper the steady state torque capability of an induction motor with saturation air gap inductance is analysed, when voltage as well as current are limited. This maximum torque can be achieved with different control schemes. Nevertheless, the schemes differ in view of robustness and the requirements to reach the optimum. In this paper, a scheme is presented that achieves the optimum operating point in the whole field weakening region only by means of the measured values of voltage and current. This method guarantees a robust adjustment with regard to the parameter uncertainties and the variable DC link voltage.","PeriodicalId":19979,"journal":{"name":"PESC Record. 27th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"69 1","pages":"944-950 vol.1"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86108736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, the method of instantaneous power transformation is the most popular one for the active power-line conditioning control. This method uses the measurements of the power-line voltage and current to estimate the required harmonic compensation. The method requires much hardware for the measurements and many computations. The high accuracy hardware for measurements are costly and many computations can introduce truncation errors. Also, this method is sensitive to the power-line voltage measurements and may introduce control errors. A new simple transformation method is developed to overcome these difficulties. This control computes the correct harmonic compensation using the power-line current measurement only. This requires less hardware for the power-line voltages measurements and simplifies the computational processes. Unlike the traditional method, the accuracy of the new control method is not affected by the line voltage measurements, therefore, it is reliable under any power-line condition. An active power-line conditioner has been successfully developed to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the new control method. Typical test results are given in the paper.","PeriodicalId":19979,"journal":{"name":"PESC Record. 27th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"57 1","pages":"1317-1322 vol.2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88254924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
