Subsequently, these conditions contributed to an unprecedented surge in teacher burnout. This chapter explores the strategies of 165 U.S. world language teachers for coping with teacher burnout during the pandemic: 76.7% of respondents indicated an increase in burnout after the pandemic started. The most alarming trends in the data are the reduction of access to certain coping strategies, the degradation of effective strategies into ineffective ones, and the severe reduction of the time and energy available to engage in these strategies. These data indicate that teacher burnout should be a priority concern to prevent any further damage to our education systems.","PeriodicalId":199145,"journal":{"name":"Transferring Language Learning and Teaching From Face-to-Face to Online Settings","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131231433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter interrogates factors related to students' willingness to communicate (WTC) in online-mediated discussions in a Japanese university classroom. Using a self-determination theory framework to conduct a thematic analysis of data collected from focus group discussions and the written reflections of English L2 learners (N=19), three main factors were found to contribute to a lack of WTC. Two of the three are unique to online learning: disruptive environmental factors and a thwarting of relatedness between classmates. The third factor, a perceived lack of communicative ability, although not unique to online learning, was amplified by the online environment. In order to address these factors, which contribute to a lack of WTC, a number of teaching interventions aimed at fostering communicative online classrooms are introduced.","PeriodicalId":199145,"journal":{"name":"Transferring Language Learning and Teaching From Face-to-Face to Online Settings","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126894060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking into account the principles of effective online teaching and with a view of making course content consistent, relevant, and meaningful to students, the authors of this chapter decided to transform a compulsory course of the Department of English Language and Literature into a blended course with elements of a remote flipped classroom. This chapter aims to present the decisions taken for the adjustment of the course and to present university students' evaluation of this course focusing their opinions of the revised course structure and challenges they faced while completing the course. The results revealed that although student response to fully online distance learning was not overwhelmingly positive, their response towards the flipped classroom model was. This points to the great potential the flipped classroom model can have for introducing pedagogies that combine distance learning with face-to-face teaching.","PeriodicalId":199145,"journal":{"name":"Transferring Language Learning and Teaching From Face-to-Face to Online Settings","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114994639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also looks at how language teachers within the United States perceive the future of teaching languages. 175 educators responded to an anonymous online survey composed of various types of items such as multiple-choice, binary format, selection of multiple answers, and open-ended. Cronbach's alpha was .717 for 114 items and sub items. Descriptive statistics and repeated measures t-tests were computed to investigate teaching strategies and psychological consequences during the Covid-19 pandemic. The goals of this chapter are twofold: (1) to identify emotions and wellbeing issues that may be affecting language faculties and their success at their United States institutions and (2) to offer general recommendations to high-level administrators that draw upon language teachers' perceptions and factors that hinder L2 development in language programs.","PeriodicalId":199145,"journal":{"name":"Transferring Language Learning and Teaching From Face-to-Face to Online Settings","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116161285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
