Their incidence is particularly high and strongly correlates with increasing age. While a significant rise in fracture rates was projected for the late 20th century and subsequent decades, available literature data since then have presented mixed findings. Although an absolute increase in fracture numbers was observed, in many developed regions a decline in incidence has also been noted. The epidemiology of hip injuries is relatively complex. Beyond factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, hereditary and acquired diseases, and certain drug therapies, geographical and social factors – including urbanization – also play a clearly demonstrable role. The most fundamental principle in the therapeutic algorithm for hip fractures is striving for the earliest and most complete restoration of patient mobility, thereby reducing the high complication rates associated with immobilization. However, treating old and very old patients cannot be based only on trauma principles. For these individuals, concurrent interdisciplinary geriatric therapy as well as proper rehabilitation and nursing care are of great importance. Given the frequency of periarticular hip injuries – as their role is significant in the daily emergency practice as well as in every other subspecialty that includes the care of the elderly – it is essential to understand their epidemiological background and the fundamentals of treatment options. This knowledge can facilitate early and adequate recognition of injuries as well as prompt and appropriate therapy. The aim of this review is to provide a general and comprehensive overview, thereby expanding current knowledge on hip fractures based on the latest available literature. This study evaluates the public health impact of the program during its first four years, with a particular focus on the distribution of refractive errors and the presence of amblyogenic refractive factors. Objective: The aim of our study is to assess the operation and effectiveness of the program through the concept of “vision saved”, which encompasses interventions aimed at preventing amblyopia – such as prescribing corrective glasses, performing ophthalmic surgeries, and administering occlusion therapy. In the first part of our study, we focus on the prevalence of refractive errors and their correction. Method: Refractive error categories and distributions were determined based on data obtained using handheld video refractometers during screenings. As an indicator of screening efficiency, we analyzed referrals to optometrists, placing special emphasis on unnecessary (false alarm) referrals. Children with amblyogenic refractive errors were categorized separately in the prescription data, as timely correction can prevent the development of amblyopia in these cases. Results: Between 2020 and 2023, the screening team performed 26,410 vision screenings in 127 settlements, reaching 19,724 children. This dataset provides the first comprehensive overview of the refractive status of the Hungarian paediatric population. Among the eyes examined, 60% were emmetropic, 30.5% exhibited various forms of astigmatism, and 9.5% had pure spherical refractive errors (7.4% hyperopia; 1.87% myopia). In total, 3,985 children were referred to optometrists, corresponding to a 20% referral rate. Altogether, 2,773 pairs of spectacles were prescribed, of which 1,224 (44%) fell within the amblyogenic refractive error range and are therefore considered cases of vision saved. Discussion: The effectiveness of the screening practice improved over time, with the false alarm referral rate stabilising at 2%. The program’s sustained presence over five years has contributed to increased parental engagement and a rise in spectacle wear, which exceeded 70% by 2024. These results highlight the program’s significance. Conclusion: The pediatric ophthalmology screening program of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta is unique in Hungary, as it provides comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation and care for disadvantaged children – from vision screening to organizing surgical interventions. Its long-term objective is to improve the quality of life of affected children through the early detection and correction of ophthalmic disorders. This deficiency can manifest in various clinical symptoms, such as posterior crossbite, a high-arched (gothic) palate, or dental crowding. Objective: There are several expansion methods for its treatment, which differ in terms of the timing and the magnitude of the applied forces. In addition to traditional tooth-borne expanders, skeletal anchorage devices have gained increasing attention in recent years, as they influence bone remodelling more effectively. Method: A study conducted at Semmelweis University aimed to analyze the effects of different expansion devices, with a particular focus on the phenomenon of “buccal rolling,” which refers to the lateral tipping of the dentoalveolar unit during expansion. The study involved 10 patients, who were divided into groups receiving either surgically assisted or non-assisted expansion. Measurements were carried out using digital intraoral scanning and three-dimensional analysis. Results: The results indicated that expansion with the MICRO-4 appliance without surgical assistance led to a greater degree of dentoalveolar tipping compared to surgically assisted expansion. Discussion: The expansion supported by surgical intervention proved to be faster and more effective. Conclusion: The research highlights the limitations of conservative skeletal-anchored maxillary expansion; however, further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings. Despite intensive research on pandemic-related misconceptions, the relationship between misconceptions and mental health (depression/sleep disturbance) is a rarely studied area Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between depression, sleep disturbance and quality of life with COVID–19 misconceptions and restrictive measures among recreational e-sports (video game) players taking many covariates into account. Results: A sample of 1671 recreational video game users completed the online survey (male: n = 1522 (91.08%), mean age = 21.83 ± 4.18 years; female: n = 149 (8.91%), mean age = 24.33 ± 8.38 years). According to the findings of the mental health and the quality of life questionnaires, only current sleep disorders (χ² = 22.866, p<0.001) showed a significant correlation with COVID–19 misconceptions. Analysis of the data from the mental health questionnaires and the quality of life questionnaire confirmed this same association. The attitude towards restrictive measures was not influenced by the presence of mental issues, but a close correlation was confirmed with the Activity (χ² = 15.85, p = 0.04), Pain (χ² = 15.85, p = 0.04) and Anxiety (χ² = 20.85, p = 0.01) subscales of the quality of life questionnaire. During multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), depression, sleep disturbance, and quality of life did not prove to be significant factors in the development of misconceptions or in the attitude towards restrictions, although this tendency was detectable in both cases regarding sleep disturbance, while in the case of depression regarding restrictions. Discussion and conclusion: Our study highlights the potential role of depression, sleep disturbance, and quality of life in the context of COVID–19 response. The use of biological therapy has shown significant progress in treating refractory endotypes. With the first choice option dupilumab, there is a five-year experience in Hungary. Method: In a two-center retrospective study, we included 137 patients treated with dupilumab between October 2020 and January 2025; 107 of them have at least six months follow-up data. According to professional guidelines, we assessed the degree of nasal obstruction using a visual analogue scale, polyp extent by endoscopy, olfactory dysfunction with symptom scores, and the quality of life using specific questionnaires. Results: The average treatment duration was 554.6 ± 355.3 days, with 6 patients treated for more than four years, 16 patients for more than three years, 54 patients for more than two years, and 104 patients whose therapy started more than one year ago. T2 comorbidities were as follows: asthma in 105 patients (76.64%), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug intolerance in 63 patients (45.99%), and allergic rhinitis in 69 patients (50.36%). The patient parameters significantly improved in comparison to baseline values at all time points (p<0.001). Olfactory dysfunction, significantly affecting the quality of life, improved in 71.96% of patients. Side effects were observed in 25 cases (23.36%), leading to therapy discontinuation in 5 patients (3.65%). The most common side effects were joint pain, elevated blood eosinophil count (8 cases each), skin and mucous membrane reactions (n = 7). In 27% of patients, the dupilumab dose could be reduced without compromising efficacy. Conclusion: In our long-term follow-up study on a large patient cohort, we demonstrated that dupilumab is significantly more effective than conventional treatments and safe when treatment principles are followed. The predictive role of peripheral blood parameters in the development of radiation-induced lung injury is not yet well established. Objective: This study aimed to assess whether certain peripheral blood parameters are associated with the development of radiation-induced lung injury in breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. Method: In this retrospective study, we analyzed clinical and laboratory data from 94 patients with stage I–III breast cancer who underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy and/or hormone therapy. The radiation-induced lung injury was diagnosed using imaging techniques (chest X-ray and CT). Blood parameters analyzed included white blood cell count, differential white cell count (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils), red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and thrombocyte levels. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was also calculated. Statistical comparison was performed using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results: Radiation-induced lung injury was confirmed in 43 patients (45.7%). White blood cell count (8.03 ± 8.07 G/L vs. 7.11 ± 6.19 G/L; p = 0.001), neutrophil count (5.17 ± 4.77 G/L vs. 4.82 ± 5.19 G/L; p = 0.006), and monocyte count (0.51 ± 0.26 G/L vs. 0.47 ± 0.36 G/L; p<0.001) were significantly higher in the radiation-induced lung injury-positive group. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was also significantly elevated in patients with radiation-induced lung injury (3.62 ± 3.04 vs. 3.13 ± 3.45; p<0.001). No significant differences were found in red blood cell, hemoglobin, or thrombocyte levels. Conclusion: Elevated white blood cell, neutrophil, and monocyte counts, as well as an increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio may serve as predictive biomarkers of radiation-induced lung injury in breast cancer patients. Between 12–17% of couples of reproductive age experience infertility. The high prevalence of fertility disorders has led to an increasing demand for assisted reproductive techniques, of which in vitro fertilization is one of the most widely used. Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the use of in vitro fertilization in the publicly funded healthcare system in Hungary. Method: The study was a retrospective and quantitative research, for which the necessary data were obtained from the database of theNational Health Insurance Fund Administration and the Pulvita Health Data Warehouse of the National Hospital General Directorate. The research evaluated the number of inpatient cases related to in vitro fertilization treatment from 2010 to 2023. Further analyses were performed on the contribution of Hungarian hospitals to in vitro fertilization, the territorial inequalities of utilization in a county breakdown, and also on diagnosis-related groups. Descriptive statistics and linear regression were used. Results: A total of 127,616 cases were treated in publicly funded inpatient facilities during the study period. A significant increase in the number of cases was observed from 2019 onwards. Patient turnover in 2023 was almost 2.5 times higher than in 2010. However, there are still significant inequalities in the use of services at the territorial level. The average age of the study population shows an upward trend between 2010 and 2020. Conclusion: The increase in state involvement from 2019 onwards has had a noticeable impact on the increase of in vitro fertilization patients. Its significance has grown due to insights from the COVID–19 pandemic and the rising hMPV cases reported by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in late 2024. Objective: The aim of the study was to retrospectively analyze the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of hMPV cases diagnosed between 2019 and 2024 at the Central Hospital of Southern Pest National Institute of Hematology and Infectious Diseases. Method: A single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted between December 2019 and December 2024, including all adult patients who had confirmed hMPV infection by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Clinical data (demographics, comorbidities, initial clinical presentation, viral co-infection) and complications (hospitalization, oxygen requirement, pneumonitis, intensive care unit admission, mechanical ventilation, in-hospital mortality) were recorded. The primary composite endpoint, which also determined the complicated course, was based on in-hospital mortality, intensive care unit admission, or mechanical ventilation initiation. Results: A total of 80 patients were included (mean age: 58 ± 30 years; male: n = 47, 58.8%). A complicated course was observed in 10% (n = 8), which occurred significantly more frequently in older patients (66 ± 10 vs. 55±31 years, p = 0.05). Pneumonitis occurred in 45% (n = 36), hospitalization in 42.5% (n = 34), oxygen requirement in 30% (n = 24), intensive care unit admission in 8.75% (n =7), mechanical ventilation in 6.25% (n = 5), and in-hospital mortality in 6.25% (n = 5). Intensive care unit admission and in-hospital mortality were not always exclusively due to hMPV infection. Discussion: According to our findings, the clinical significance of hMPV is important in immunocompromised, elderly, and patients with chronic respiratory diseases, as the infection can lead to severe respiratory complications. Conclusion: In summary, when hMPV infection is suspected, diagnostics should be extended including hMPV, particularly in high-risk groups, as early diagnosis is crucial for preventing severe outcomes. Among Hungarian preschoolers, an average of 3-4 primary teeth are affected per child. The Hall technique was introduced in the early 2000s, it is a minimally invasive approach for managing carious primary molars. Its benefits include suitability for uncooperative or anxious pediatric patients, procedural simplicity, and cost- and time-efficiency. Despite numerous studies demonstrating its effectiveness, its integration into routine pediatric dental practice remains limited. This review aims to assess the current acceptance of the Hall technique among children, parents, and dental professionals. For this research, we used 28 scientific papers, published between 2006–2024. Children who participated generally had a positive view of the procedure, with the majority (81–89%) reporting no or minimal discomfort. On a scale of one to ten, the procedure was rated as moderately burdensome (grade 4), with 47% citing the taste of the luting cement as the most unpleasant aspect. Parents considered the inconvenience perceived by their children to be minor and were overwhelmingly positive (80–84%) about the technique. Although the majority of dentists were familiar with the Hall technique, few had used it in practice. Clinical outcomes are favorable, with 75% of treated primary molars retained three years post-operatively. The technique is primarily indicated for class II asymptomatic carious lesions in children presenting with behavioral management difficulties or limited cooperation. Despite its proven efficacy, acceptance and implementation of the Hall technique in pediatric dentistry continue to face challenges, with varying opinions regarding treatment quality. Wider adoption requires further evidence-based clinical data and increased training and support for dentists.
