The pose and depth estimation from 2D feature points of the respective face images is considered as an optimization problem and solved using soft computing techniques. Four real parameter optimization techniques (Differential Evolution, Genetic algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization and Simulated Annealing) are used to estimate the pose and 3D structure. To evaluate the accuracy of the pose estimation to corroborate depth estimation, Head Pose Database is used. The experimental results show that the Differential Evolution significantly outperforms the other optimization techniques in estimating the pose and depths of important features, preserving facial symmetry.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115139874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have devised a scanning technique to determine the in-situ 'bow', if any, of the fuel sub-assembly(FSA) in the reactor by any one of the three methods viz 'circle-fitting', 'geometrical' and 'Hough transform-based'. In this paper, we propose a computer simulation of the ultrasonic pulse-echo measurement technique adopted in an earlier under-water experiment to determine the distances of a mock-up FSA head located at distances of 135 to 161 mm from the scanner axis, simulating the 'bow' up to 26mm. The simulation includes an acoustic model using Huygens approach to calculate the amplitudes of the ultrasonic echoes received by two downward viewing transducers (DVTs), while they scan over a simulated FSA top surface . We estimate the distances by the latter two of the above methods to an accuracy of ±2mm. These values, which are more accurate than the experimental values, are obtained after selecting for the simulation study a larger scale value for the distance to number of image pixels and a lower value for the incremental scanning angle (than those of the experiment), and by processing of 'direct-surface' echoes.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"179 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121144809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many methods that have been developed to predict, prevent and mitigate accidents in this context. All of these methods have their own purpose and limitations. This paper presents a new useful analysis technique: timed fault tree analysis. This method extends traditional fault tree analysis with temporal events and fault characteristics. Timed Fault Trees (TFTs) can determine which faults need to be eliminated urgently, and it can also provide a safe time window to repair them. They can also be used to determine the time taken for railway maintenance requirements, and thereby improve maintenance efficiency, and reduce risks. In this paper, we present the features and functionality of a railway transportation system based on timed fault tree models. We demonstrate the applicability of our framework via a case study of the China Yongwen line railway accident.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"282 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122949446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a good classical example of System that involves discrete and continuous discrete events for which initially the existing models are looked at to discuss the drawbacks and the needs of models for this problem scenario. The model we consider here has been utilized to simulate for a 2 way Railway traffic based on a schedule of the Train and People flow in the stations to analyze whether it can work without any conflicts, how it impacts the people movement and waiting, all in a single model. With this, it is possible to calculate the ratio of the cost of running the train to the cost of people waiting and arrive at optimization for the scheduling of the train. All these are done with the assumed figures of people flow both on entry to the station till they get into the train and similarly the people flow from alighting the train till they walk out of the exits.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114178421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main contribution of this research is the use of a tabu search (TS) heuristic to find near-optimal node positions in a virtual network having interdependent VMs and shared resources. This TS is an interesting solution regarding its precision and feasibility for large-sized virtual networks. The results of the TS proposed in this paper show that it is possible to reduce the planning costs of a virtual network while respecting interdependency constraints of its shared and distributed resources.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115502013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we compute the Delaunay triangulation for each fingerprint using the minutiae features. Further, we define a novel representation for the fingerprint named extended triangle set, which is very tolerant to missing minutiae. The defined extended triangle set is an extension of the Delaunay triangulation and is used in combination with a classification approach to narrow down the search space of a fingerprint database. Experiments are conducted on different Fingerprint Verification Competition (FVC) databases and the results show that, while maintaining high hit rate the proposed method achieves lower penetration rate than existing methods.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125741583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In view of the depleting fossil fuel reserves and the scarcity of non renewable resources, Engineers face a challenge to conserve energy at the design stage and at the utilization stage. Since consumers are pre occupied with their professions they need automated systems to take care of the energy consumption and make their life easy. This projects aim is to develop an energy saving device using a microcontroller for a room in which lights and other utilities are used. The sensors which provide inputs to the microcontroller detect the occupancy and other environmental conditions and logically control the output circuits. The program is written so that the inputs and outputs are controlled to optimize the energy consumption by switching the lighting and equipment appropriately by cutting off energy wasted. Collected data showed that this device helps to reduce the energy consumption. Though the prototype is demonstrated with LEDs indicating outputs, the actual product include peripheral components which meet the load ratings of the equipment to which the control system is connected. This paper presents one of such systems implemented using microcontrollers and embedded programming.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128783325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The previous paper of the authors demonstrates that the complex electromechanical coupled behaviors of PEA can be described by a simple distribute-parameter model with a critical assumption that the electrical field is uniform across each piezo layer in PEA. Besides PEA, this assumption is also widely used in modelling other thickness-mode piezoelectric transducers in literature. However, the rationale and criteria of such an important assumption is lacking. This paper unveiled the rationale and the criteria from the IEEE standard piezoelectric constitutive relations. The finding is that the assumption is effective, when thickness of a piezo layer is far less than the overall length of the thickness-mode piezoelectric transducer along the thickness direction. Besides, to further quantify the criteria of the assumption to effectively model PEA, the simple distributed-parameter PEA model, which is based on the uniform-electrical-field assumption, was compared with a FEA model, which simulates a real scenario of PEA with no uniform electrical-field simplification. The simulation results demonstrate the finding that when a PEA is stacked by more than around 10 piezo layers, this assumption is effective for modelling the PEA.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123074743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each destination is capable to extract the intended information by decoding from a common packet. In short, network coding improves the throughput for wireless and wired networks but also causes side effects such as complexity of packets management and increased delay for coding opportunity. Hence, genetic algorithm is used to optimize the resources for network coding. Genetic algorithm will search for suitable routes to the destination according to the desired throughput with a desired multicast rate. In this paper, genetic algorithm is further enhanced in searching of optimum route for a packet. The simulation results show that enhanced genetic algorithm can adapt to various situations with different topologies, providing an optimum route for a packet in the network.","PeriodicalId":198621,"journal":{"name":"2014 8th Asia Modelling Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130344972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
