The metal fingers of the MSM-PDs are etched with appropriate depths to maximize light absorption through plasmonic effects into a subwavelength aperture. Simulation results show that the nano-grating phase-shift red-shifts the wavelength at which the light absorption enhancement maximum, and that the combined effects of the nano-grating groove shape and the nano-grating phase-shift, degrade the light absorption enhancement by up to 50%.","PeriodicalId":197677,"journal":{"name":"7th International Symposium on High-capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124635698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Advance simulation for a self-consistent laser model combined with band-structure and free-carrier gain calculations is employed to study effects such as waveguiding, carrier transport and heat flux. Enhancement in output power of the optimized structure is calculated. It has been found that electron leakage into the p-doped ridge is the major limiting factor for high output power. The non-uniformity of the carrier distribution among quantum wells is believed to be responsible for undesired absorption. Noticeable improvement in the threshold currents and corresponding substantial enhancement in the optical output power have been achieved.","PeriodicalId":197677,"journal":{"name":"7th International Symposium on High-capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122245328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using 2D simulation, significant improvement in the emission intensity of the designed structures with In0.18Al0.82N EBLs compared to similar with non-EBL and Al0.8Ga0.82N as EBL is observed. This enhancement can be attributed to the fact that modified EBL is more efficient in electron confinement and reduces the efficiency droop caused by carrier spillover into pregion.","PeriodicalId":197677,"journal":{"name":"7th International Symposium on High-capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126045232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The estimated model which describes the energy and number of photons as well as the number of photoelectrons are investigated from the received signals of laser beam. For the ranging purposes, the equipment used at the H-SLR is described and also the method used for its calibration. The Range corrections due to the effect of the atmosphere on the laser beam is also discussed and applied for some satellites observed from Helwan. The ranging and illuminating space satellites are modeled and computed from the H-SLR parameters. The numbers of photons, of photoelectrons are then computed from the ranging data.","PeriodicalId":197677,"journal":{"name":"7th International Symposium on High-capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129610261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensor devices are typically deployed in large number to form a communication network for monitoring the physical environment. These devices are battery powered and the lifetime of the device is dependent on the battery's life. Once the battery's energy is depleted, the node is considered dead and is no longer part of the network. Recharging the sensors' batteries is not feasible, and in some cases, is completely impossible. Due to their severe energy constraints and redundancy in sensed data, hierarchal architectures are usually suggested for these networks. These architectures have proven effective in extending the network life several folds. The LEACH network routing protocol is the first protocol to use clustering for energy conservation in Wireless Sensor Networks. LEACH designers observe that there is an ideal percentage of nodes that need to be cluster heads to achieve optimal energy performance. For their work and performance analysis they selected 5% as the number of cluster heads in the netwok. The majority of routing protocols for WSNs follow LEACH and use clustering for energy performance optimization. Most of these protocols have taken the 5% percentage of cluster head as their ideal working setting, without independently qualifying this assumption. In this work, we use simulation modeling to investigate the dependency of this cluster head percentage on the network node density. Our results show that this percentage is not universal for all network settings, and is indeed dependent on the density. These findings will add to the challenging task of WSNs hierarchical networking protocols design.","PeriodicalId":197677,"journal":{"name":"7th International Symposium on High-capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123096685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to high capacity and flexibility, they are the most promising architecture for last mile internet access. Addressing the fact that deployed radios in the wireless part of WOBAN are under-utilized in current routing algorithms, half of the links remain idle while few of these links are carrying traffic, which result in greater link delays. In this paper we present an efficient routing algorithm to make use of under-utilized radios in WOBAN. We develop ‘Flow Limited Routing Algorithm (FLRA)’. Our technique shows significant improvement in system delay compared to existing solutions.","PeriodicalId":197677,"journal":{"name":"7th International Symposium on High-capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116304234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multicast Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (MAODV) protocol is one of the well-known multicast routing protocol in MANET. In this paper, we identify and describe, for the first time, three new protocol-dependant attacks on multicast operations of MAODV namely, Group Leader Selection (GLS); False Link Breakage (FLB) and Group Leader Pruning (GLP) attack. For each attack, we implement a scenario to demonstrate the impact of the attack on the performance of the network. Implemented scenarios show a considerable degradation in the Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) of the protocol. Accordingly, we propose security countermeasures for the identified attacks. Simulation results of the secured and unsecured MAODV show that the proposed countermeasures are effective and efficient. In particular, compared to unsecured MAODV, the proposed countermeasures improve the PDR with 85%","PeriodicalId":197677,"journal":{"name":"7th International Symposium on High-capacity Optical Networks and Enabling Technologies","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128624280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
