This paper presents a comparative study of two control strategies for doubly fed induction generator based wind energy conversion system (DFIG-based WECS). The study focuses on the regulation of the DFIG active and reactive powers using the so-called sliding mode control and classical PI controllers. Control strategies are developed in the dq coordinates. The robustness and reliability of implemented controllers are tested with large grid disturbances due to an overvoltage and voltage sags. The DFIG control strategies are evaluated through simulations using MATLAB/SIMULINK software.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125856560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of wind power production can only be calculated by comparing operational costs, Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP), and emission rates in two power integration scenarios: Added-Wind case and No Added-Wind case scenarios. This paper presents operational impacts of wind power for both scenarios applied to Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC) US equivalent electric power system. We consider seasonal wind and load power patterns by simulating a 10-minute constrained economic dispatch optimization model (CEDOM) for three days in January, July and September. We observe that the effects of large scale wind power on system operations and emission reductions vary due to seasonal system load variations and consequent variations in dispatched power. Next, we study the effects of policies on the wind power plants revenues (taking into account prediction costs) in particular, the Production Tax Credit (PTC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) proposed. It appears that the FERC policy would result in higher revenues to wind power producers.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128440471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Loading factor has been chosen as objective function of OPF problem to enhance system security. It is demonstrated that available transfer capability (ATC) is a suitable criterion for evaluation of system security. In addition, this concept is consistent to ISO requirements for system operation. On the other hand, loading factor (LF) is an alternative concept that can evaluate system ATC. Therefore, in this work, the correlation between LF and ATC has been demonstrated. The proposed OPF model formulation has been solved in order to maximize loading factor. By solving this optimization model for normal and contingency conditions, ISO can be ensured about system reliability and security. Finally, the proposed optimal power flow model is applied and tested on the CIGRE 32-bus system for normal and contingency cases.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127326546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conventional multilevel inverter is constructed by the H-bridge and cascaded multilevel inverter constructed by two full H-bridges. FPGA logic device is chosen for the hardware implementation of control circuit. VHDL language is used to model the inverter switching strategies. The proposed controller generates 4 and 8 control signals for conventional multilevel inverter and cascaded multilevel inverter respectively. These inverters provide 3-level and 7- level output voltages. Matlab/System generator and XILINX are used as a simulation and compiler architecture of control circuit embedded in FPGA. These inverter topologies with filters would have reduced harmonics and can operate at high efficiency.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"13 38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130878239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new method uses the unscented transform and the RTS algorithm to have a smoother and optimal tracking response. A nonlinear model of the system is developed and the mathematics of the method is derived for a supposed power signal. The algorithm is simulated in MATLAB with the assumption of a measured voltage with low-order harmonics and in presence of a noise with SNR of 10. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs with a smooth, fast dynamic and tracking response in present of noise and harmonics. The accuracy of the method is also better in comparison with other Kalman based algorithms.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123344857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Renewable sources such as wind and solar has gain popularity and demand over the last decade. These sources suffer from certain deficiencies when used alone. Power produced from these sources depends very much on the weather condition. Thus, combination of these sources had shown excellent potential as complementary option to generate power. This paper investigates the performance of micro scale solar-wind-battery scheme for a residential load in Malaysia. Real wind speed, solar radiation and temperature have been obtained from the Malaysian Meteorological Department and will be used as the parameters for this study. The outcome presented in this paper show potential and viability in using hybrid system to sustain residential load in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":197298,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126466859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
