The performer stands in front of the studio camera and interacts with an infrared-laser-based multi-touch device. The final TV image shows the performer interacting with a virtual screen which is augmented in front of herself. To overcome the problem of the performer not seeing this virtual screen in reality, we use a special hexagonal grid to facilitate the performer's awareness of this novel Theremin-like virtual musical instrument.","PeriodicalId":197131,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on VR Innovation","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132008510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the creation of contents for the dome display is not easy, because it needs omni-directional images. In this study, we propose the layer based method to create the dome contents easily. This method generates three-dimensional contents by placing two-dimensional image elements in the space and moving them or using the camera work effectively. In particular, in this paper, the depth sensation felt from the layered image was measured quantitatively and the necessary number of layers to represent the three-dimensional image was discussed based on the psychophysical experiments. Moreover, several dome contents were created using the proposed method and the effectiveness of this method was evaluated.","PeriodicalId":197131,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on VR Innovation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129746073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The underlying cause of this phenomenon is currently unclear. Potential candidates for the causal mechanism of this experience include steam, temperature, humidity and tactile receptor activity. In this paper we investigated the underlying mechanism of this novel non-contact tactile experience. To this end, we tested separate aspects of this experience independently. Our results suggest that stimulation of Merkel cells via sweat duct expansion is the principal cause this perceptual phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":197131,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on VR Innovation","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126193192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Would a building be more appealing if it had interactive elements? Would that encourage people to visit it again, spend more time in it and promote it to others? Or would interactivity be a trivial presence in a building? Our previous study showed that people could concentrate better when surrounded by moving patterns that give an impression of moving walls. Whether people are more likely to return to architecture that is interactive and the appeal of interactive architecture over a non interactive counterpart has not been tested before. This study makes use of second life as a place where people can visit at will. Two identical buildings were designed for the experiment with one of them having interactive elements. They were then placed in an online virtual environment that is accessible by the public and whose visits were monitored for four months. Initial results indicate that people prefer the interactive building over the non-interactive one. Appeal was measured by number of visitors, number of visits, time spent in each visit, number of groups that visited and returned to each building. These results demonstrate the importance of interactive elements in generating more interest and traffic for buildings and events.","PeriodicalId":197131,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on VR Innovation","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115208147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Photorealistic and non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) are two ways to achieve this goal. Non-photorealistic rendering creates an abstract version of both the real and virtual world by stylization to make them indistinguishable. We present a painterly rendering algorithm for AR applications. This algorithm paints composed AR video frames with bump-mapping curly brushstrokes. Tensor fields are created for each frame to define the direction for the brushstrokes. We use tensor field pyramids to interpolate sparse tensor field values over the frame to avoid the numeric problems caused by global radial basis interpolation in existing algorithms. Due to the characteristics of AR applications we use only information from the current frame and previous frame to provide temporal coherence in two ways for the painted video. First, brushstroke anchors are warped from the previous frame to the current frame based on their neighbor feature points. Second, brushstroke appearances are reshaped by blending two parameterized brushstrokes to achieve better temporal coherence. Themajor difference between our algorithmand existing NPR work in general graphics and AR/VR areas is that we use feature points across AR frames to maintain coherence in the rendering. The use of tensor field pyramids and extra properties of brushstrokes, such as cut-off angles, are also novel features that extend exiting NPR algorithms.","PeriodicalId":197131,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on VR Innovation","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133062573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
