The aim of this study was to evaluate adhesion formation of prosthetic meshes after intraabdominal implantation to repair a surgical defect in the anterior abdominal wall. This anatomical defect was repaired by one of the three types of previously sterilized meshes: 1) fibroin 2) fibroin with polyethylene glycol and 3) commercial polypropylene mesh as control. The grip score was significantly higher in the commercial polypropylene mesh. Fibroin is a promising biomaterial for treating defects of the abdominal wall.","PeriodicalId":196438,"journal":{"name":"2014 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114885652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Present cardiovascular function assessment techniques encompass a broad range of diagnostic tools which in most cases involve high and mid level cost instrumentation. They include among others instrumentation as a part of nuclear cardiology, cardiac catheterization, cardiac ultrasound, relatively basic multiple or simple channel ECG acquisition systems, and other. These techniques and related instrumentation represent very useful and powerful tools to diagnose and/or manage particular cardiac abnormalities; however they are not suitable for broader population low cost basic supplemental cardiac screening. Therefore, these studies focused on a structured assessment of cardiac sound traits as related auscultation is a part of standard medical exams and globally accepted procedures. For these reasons a dedicated cardiac sounds assessment algorithm was developed and has been tested on heart sound database that contains 565 signals encompassing 202 normal and 363 abnormal sounds. A broad range of diverse cardiac sound indicators, versatility of database, and derived characteristics validate potency of possible clinical usefulness and potential for a low cost broader diagnostic screening. In particular, the group of abnormal heart sounds contains samples of 35 different heart abnormalities which are divided into two groups including Group I that contains 28 different heart abnormalities that are 81.81% successfully detectable by the developed algorithm and Group II that contains 7 different heart abnormalities that do not exhibit the frequency change of S1 sound and are not classified by the proposed method. Normal heart sounds in 97.03% of cases were successfully classified with the developed method which is addressing the needs for a selected cardiac screening in light of increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.","PeriodicalId":196438,"journal":{"name":"2014 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114829972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three experimental protocols have been used: transcutaneous electrostimulation (TENS), therapheutic ultrasound (US) and cryotherapy. Twelve volunteers (2 men and 10 women; 57.25 ± 12.04 years old) participated in the study, which had ten therapeutic sessions. The volunteers were allocated to 3 groups: Group A (TENS); Group B (US associated with cryotherapy); and Group C (TENS, US and cryotherapy). The goal was to compare qualitatively and quantitatively the relief of the tendinitis-related pain, before and after the treatment. The pain has been assessed by a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and by the SF-36 questionnaire. The resulting scores from these questionnaires, before and after treatment, were compared. The preliminary results suggest that the three treatments led to pain reduction, but the sample size do not allow for statistical significance yet. Therefore, further work is needed, with the increase of the number of subjects, in order to get a clearer picture.","PeriodicalId":196438,"journal":{"name":"2014 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"214 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117344704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main purpose of this research is the development of a sleepiness monitoring device for drivers who works for long hours. The proposed monitoring system is composed for a conditioning and acquisition stage for electrooculographs signals (EOG) and control stage dedicated to send and activation alarm. The acquired signals were visualized in a user interface developed in Matlab which also make the signal processing to detect de retina rest potentials for posterior analysis. The EOG signals were reliable enough to establish the threshold levels for the activation of the alarm.","PeriodicalId":196438,"journal":{"name":"2014 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122409163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, skin wrinkles typically occur due to aging processes, including loss of body mass, sun damage, smoking, squinting and other factors. They represent a clear and easily accessible indicator of changes. As such, one can also acquire useful information about the aging process in skin by analyzing the wrinkles. To this end, we utilize a combination of numerical techniques, including color quantization, image segmentation, and various edge detection algorithms in order to perform automated wrinkle counting and wrinkle density calculations. As a more appropriate alternative to chronological age, such a methodology allows us to come up with quantifiable measures for skin aging, which may be used for performing statistics and extracting general patterns associated with physiological aging of the skin, as well as extending such numerical techniques for other biomedical applications in which distinct topological features contain important information about biological processes. Different subjects were used to test the techniques and extract aging patterns by examining the skin immediately underneath the lower eyelid as our region of interest. Numerically processed photographs, included counting the number of wrinkles meeting predefined threshold conditions, and calculating the corresponding wrinkle density for a given subject and particular conditions. Applicability and practicality of different edge detection methods were also a part of the studies as demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":196438,"journal":{"name":"2014 Pan American Health Care Exchanges (PAHCE)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125384130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
