This is a decision tree classifier which uses modified gini index as the partitioning criteria. A pre-sorting technique is used to overcome the problem of sorting at each node of the tree. This technique is integrated with a breadth first tree growth strategy which enables us to calculate the best partition for each of the leaf nodes in a single scan of a database. We have implemented this algorithm using depth first tree growth strategy also. The algorithm uses a dynamic pruning approach which reduces the number of scans of the database and does away with a separate tree pruning phase. The proof of correctness, analysis and performance study are also presented.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. We focus on the composition of megamodules, which are large distributed components or computation servers that are autonomously operated and maintained. The composition of megamodules offers various challenges. Megamodules are not necessarily all accessible by the same distribution protocol (such as CORBA, DCOM, RMI and DCE). Their concurrent nature and potentially long duration of service execution necessitates asynchronous invocation and collection of results. Novel needs and opportunities for optimization arise when composing megamodules. In order to meet these challenges, we have defined a purely compositional language called CHAIMS, and are now developing the architecture supporting this language. In this paper we describe CHAIMS and how it meets the challenges of composing megamodules.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. We draw on experiences gained in an ESPRIT project called TREVI, which concerns news filtering and enrichment and includes an English/Spanish multilingual lexicon. We sketch the way the lexicon, including an ontology, is constructed and present the methodology used for adding domain ontologies. In general, the approach is lexicon-driven in the sense that ontology (semantics) and lexicon (word forms) are developed in tandem.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. A document-driven approach to database report generation 生成数据库报告的文档驱动方法

Chan","doi":"10.1109/DEXA.1998.707516","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DEXA.1998.707516","url":null,"abstract":"It can be argued that report generation is the most frequently performed task in database applications. Therefore the efficacy and efficiency of a database report generation mechanism has a significant impact on productivity. This paper introduces a document-driven approach as opposed to the traditional schema-driven approach to report generation resulting in more flexibility. In this approach, generating a report involves specifying it in terms of a user defined SGML-based report model. Contents of a report can be specified using a transformation language together with queries that retrieve data from different databases. A report is output as a SGML document which can be further edited as well as translated to other formats, for instance to HTML to be viewed using an Internet browser. This paper presents the approach using an example and discusses the features and usage of the transformation language which is a small but expressive language. Despite of the fact that we have only investigated the transformation against relational databases, we believe that this approach can unify report generation for different database models.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. The first set are models of administrative work which computer scientists bear in mind when developing support systems. Then the focus turns to a second set of models, namely those employed by administrative sciences for the comprehension of administrative work. Both model sets are juxtaposed and the form of correlation interpreted.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. Mission critical applications are required to be executed fault tolerantly in these systems. However, mobile stations support neither enough volume of storage and processing power nor enough capacity of battery to do reliable communication for a long period. Moreover, wireless communication channels are less reliable. Hence, the communication channels with mobile stations are often disconnected. Therefore, it is difficult for multiple mobile stations to take checkpoints synchronously since the communication channels with the mobile stations may be disconnected even while taking the checkpoints. We have proposed hybrid checkpointing where checkpoints are taken asynchronously by the mobile stations and synchronously by the fixed stations. In addition, the mobile stations record messages for getting local states consistent with the checkpoints taken by the fixed stations. We propose a method for how the mobile stations record the messages, gather the messages stored in the stable storage distributed in multiple mobile stations, and recompute the messages in a consistent order.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. Users need only to specify some trigger rules to execute some amendment actions if an update violates a constraint. Rules may be written incorrectly, however it is hard to verify the rule correctness. We first propose the restoring condition to detect when the trigger rules can restore the validity of a given constraint after an update. Finally, we investigate the combined effect of the restoring conditions and propose a method to confirm which constraint may not be enforced correctly by the given trigger rules.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. Our general hypothesis is that people may agree to cooperate under the control of some computer system provided that it does not bother them more than necessary. Our approach tries to take this assumption into account while enforcing general properties on activity interactions and using the semantic of applications to ensure correctness of activity results.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. We introduce the term \"software botryology\" for the area of research that attempts to automatically cluster a software system (\"botrys\" is the ancient Greek word for a cluster of grapes). In this paper, we survey approaches to the clustering problem from researchers in the software engineering community. We also present clustering techniques used in other disciplines and argue that their utilization in a software context could lead to better solutions to the software clustering problem. Finally, we outline research challenges and open problems of interest.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. Writing and correcting textual scenarios for system design 编写和修改系统设计的文本场景

Textual scenarios are narrative descriptions of flows of actions between agents. They are often proposed to elicit, validate or document requirements. The CREWS experience has shown that the advantage of scenarios is their ease of use, and that their disadvantage stands in the lack of guidelines for 'quality' authoring. We propose guidance for the authoring of scenarios. The guided scenario authoring process is divided into two main stages: the writing of scenarios, and the correcting of scenarios. To guide the writing of scenarios, we provide style and content guidelines referring to a conceptual and linguistic model of scenarios. Our assumption is that scenarios written in conformance to these guidelines can be semi-automatically analysed. Otherwise, to guide the correcting of scenarios, we propose a set of enactable rules. These rules aim at the clarification, completion and conceptualisation of scenarios, and help the scenario author to improve his scenarios until acceptable quality in the terms of the former scenario models.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat.
