Experimental tests were executed on volunteers in selected and controlled conditions and with different device setting. In each test session the MW signal was digitally acquired and saved together with true physiological signals coming from standard medical instrumentation. Single and multichannel data processing were applied in order to extract characteristic features from each signal and to identify any significant correlation. The results show the ability of the method to obtain precise indications on small physiological movements such as breathing or heartbeat; the received MW signal seems to offer specific information about the mechanical dynamics of the cardiac system. With our configuration settings, main limitations of this approach come from its low capacity to penetrate deeply into the body and to the poor spatial resolution.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130358856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we have used a mathematical model of lidocaine developed by our group and incorporated it into the Luo Rudy model of ventricular action potential. We have studied the action of lidocaine on the sodium current (INa), maximum upstroke velocity (dV/dt) and conduction velocity (CV) in ischemic tissue. Additionally, we measured the block window (BW) in different concentrations of drug .Our results show that 100 mumol/L of lidocaine under simulated acute ischemic conditions reduces the INa, dV/dt and CV a 42%, 41% and 24% in the normal zone (cell 54), respectively while in the border zone (cell 94) the decreased was 37%; 44% and 18% for the same parameters. Finally, we have found that lidocaine diminished the BW, thus the drug tends to eliminate the UDB.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117114052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we propose to investigate the capabilities of a new Bayesian approach for detecting premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), namely the Gaussian process (GP) approach. Second, we report an experimental comparison of different kinds of ECG signal representations, which are the standard temporal signal morphology, the discrete wavelet transform domain, the S-transform characteristics and the high-order statistics. In general, the obtained classification results show that the GP detector can compete seriously with state-of-the-art methods since it allows to yield better overall accuracy as well as better sensitivity. In addition, among the different kinds of features explored, those based on high-order statistics appear to be the best compromise between accuracy and computational time for PVC detection.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116234765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A modern biophysically detailed mathematical model of human atrial action potential was modified to incorporate electrophysiological properties of different cell types present within the atria. The heterogeneous cell models were then further modified to incorporate data on AF induced electrical remodelling (AFER) of ion channel kinetics and current densities. These modified models were used to simulate electrical activity in cells, ID strands and 2D heterogeneous sheets. AFER heterogeneously reduced action potential duration in all cell types. The theme of inhomogeneous response to AFER was observed through all cell and ID simulations. Sheet simulations showed that whilst re-entry self terminated in the control case, it persisted under AFER conditions.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115280826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this work was to reduce the PVE using a modified iterative expectation maximization (EM) reconstruction algorithm. The goal of the method was to increase the accuracy of tracer concentration values in order to obtain an in vivo better estimate of physiological parameters. The performance of the proposed correction method was evaluated by calculating left ventricle and myocardium mean value using simulated cardiac fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) dynamic images.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"49 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113960795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides the advantages for patients, this solution could also provide significant cost savings through the exploitation of low-cost equipment for simple physiological measurements to be performed at home, sending the recorded data to the healthier staff placed elsewhere. Tile aim of this work is the development of a low-cost tele-home care system based on the digital video broadcasting terrestrial (DVB-T) technology for the remote monitoring of cardiopathic and diabetic patients. Easy to use even by untrained or elderly people, such tele-home care system could represent the best solution in terms of simplicity, quality and costs.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125197289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Meanwhile, detection models for Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVC) are widely investigated, a less studied problem is data analysis and visualization. In this paper, we propose an approach for PVC detection and data visualization by exploiting the intrinsic geometry of the high-dimensional data using manifold learning and Support Vector Machines (SVM). ISOMAP forms a neighborhood-preserving projection which allows to uncover the low-dimensional manifold and is used here as a pre-processing step. Then by incorporating training labels the method is capable of recognizing PVC patterns with comparable accuracy of kernel learning machines.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126374994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional oscillometric sphygmomanometer is simple to use and it needs no peripheral device. However, the method provides no guarantee of accuracy in all circumstance, because it is based on statistics. In this paper, we propose a new oscillometric method with two cuffs. A cuff is placed on upper arm as usual and another cuff is added on forearm. By adding one more blood pressure cuff, there are two different waveforms are shown and the different characteristics between both cuffs can be compared. The results of our experiments show that it is possible to measure blood pressure using dual-cuff oscillometric method.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129690528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, significant and suitably designed image and signal processing algorithms are introduced to objectively and reliably evaluate important features that can facilitate decisional problems in collaboration with the CDSS. Architectural details of the components of the CDSS needed for the seamless integration of image and signal analysis work-flows are finally discussed.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121927935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A non-null correlation between the TWA occurring and lesser values for the Holder exponent of maximum dimension has been observed, in agreement with the idea that the projection of TWA must have a non-despicable contribution in the higher scales of the multiresolution analysis of the signal. We are developing new algorithms capable to deal with non-concave multifractal spectra based in wavelet leaders projections, instead of existing methods that only gives concave spectra. These new algorithms will give a finer resolution of Holder component of the signal and we hope that this richer information about the sharpness of the signal will allow better estimations of the magnitude of TWA and a closer relation between multifractal spectra and TWA occurring.","PeriodicalId":194782,"journal":{"name":"2008 Computers in Cardiology","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121973466","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
