The SG framework provides a performance toolkit based on information and communication technologies. The SG paradigm supervises and promotes grid operations at a high level of expertise. AI systems have attributed to the realization of sustainable development goals including the vital integration of renewable energy sources (RES). The scarcity of conventional energy resources in the near future and their increasing threats to the environment extremely require the transition toward RES. The bulk penetration of RES into the electrical grid leads to unstable and volatile power generation. The chapter presents the commonly applied AI methods to the SG system and the key elements of the evaluation procedure.","PeriodicalId":194769,"journal":{"name":"Smart Grid and Enabling Technologies","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130372373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cloud Computing (CC) can offer all these computing and storage resources. This chapter discusses the fundamental relationship between SG and CC services. CC could be utilized to execute the communication process among substations, loads, and the main power grid. CC can provide three main layers of services: infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, and software as a service. The chapter also discusses the architectural principles of CC services, and provides a sufficient understanding of various forms of CC. It describes opportunities and difficulties of using CC in SGs, and explains the major categories of data security challenges of CC. The deployment of CC in SG applications has multiple standpoints which can be grouped as organizational, technical, economic, and political standpoints.","PeriodicalId":194769,"journal":{"name":"Smart Grid and Enabling Technologies","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115625780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It presents an introduction to typical distributed generation systems with the power electronics. The improvement of photovoltaics (PV) conversion efficiency, advancement in manufacturing technology and reduced cost of PV modules, are the main driving forces for the intensive utilization of PV power. The chapter introduces power electronic converters in grid‐connected AC systems and their control technologies. It also presents control strategies of voltage‐source converters, followed by an overview of multilevel converters and modular multilevel converters. The chapter explains converter level control methodologies and system level coordination. It shows that system frequency and voltage restorations, obtained by both centralized and distributed control schemes. DC microgrids have been progressively developed with the increasing penetration of solar PV power and wide deployment of battery system which are naturally in DC.","PeriodicalId":194769,"journal":{"name":"Smart Grid and Enabling Technologies","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128494822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter builds on the concepts of data management and analytics in SG to build the foundation needed for data analytics to transform Big Data for high‐value action. Big data sources in SG generally fall into two main categories; electric utility data sources and supplementary data sources. The Big Data system will store, process, and mine information in an efficient manner to enhance different SG services. The chapter presents a list of the most common big data tools utilized by successful analytics developers to store, manage, and analyze big data. Big Data needs additional convincing methods to handle the massive amount of information in a limited time span. Any data exchange in SG must be effectively protected through specific “Privacy Concerns” which have potential privacy impacts of SG and smart meter systems.","PeriodicalId":194769,"journal":{"name":"Smart Grid and Enabling Technologies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130751980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
