Catalogers devote considerable time and resources to provide access to serials. How much of that effort results in increased access ? A serials cataloger analyzes a transaction log to examine patron behavior, and a medical librarian describes several techniques to enhance access to serial records.","PeriodicalId":193780,"journal":{"name":"Serials to the Tenth Power","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123051098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, mathematics is a natural area for development of fully featured full-text databases. The AMS has responded by providing a communications network, e-MATH, on the World Wide Web. Currently the network serves as the home to an umbrella preprint server, the e-journal, Electronic Research Announcements of the AMS, and a variety of member services. In 1996, e-MATH will offer on-line access to AMS's flagship publication, Mathematical Reviews, with links from published reviews to complete papers available in on-line versions of AMS journals.","PeriodicalId":193780,"journal":{"name":"Serials to the Tenth Power","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128674700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ubiquitous networks, storage servers, printers, and document and graphics software are transforming the world from one in which only a few publishing houses print and disseminate works, to one in which any individual can print or offer for dissemination any work at low cost and in short order. This poses major challenges for publishers of scientific works and for the standard practices of scientific peer review. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) aims to be one of the first scientific society publishers to cross the divide. ACM has embarked on an ambitious electronic publication plan, co-authored by Peter Denning and Bernard Rous, Deputy Director of ACM Publications, and has established new copyright policies to accompany it.","PeriodicalId":193780,"journal":{"name":"Serials to the Tenth Power","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131539490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two perspectives on these issues were presented at this workshop. Fran Wilkinson spoke about the new roles in function and staff training in the library bindery unit based on a survey of 108 ARL libraries. Jack Fairfield discussed the goals and objectives of commercial biders in the preservation of library materials. Each emphasized that libraries and commercial binders ate becoming more aware of the importance of this critical step in conservation and preservation of books, serials, and other paper documents for future use by scholars.","PeriodicalId":193780,"journal":{"name":"Serials to the Tenth Power","volume":"14 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132643867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
