An important concern is the good formation of citizens for life in society, especially when such improvement can help mitigate accidents, and consequently save lives. Therefore, the aim of this article is to describe the development of a system to support training of young drivers to make the learning of the traffic rules more friendly and exciting. To achieve this, we developed a game called Kinard Car, where we use the Microsoft Kinect sensor integrated with an Arduino micro controller. The environment consists of a small remotely operated vehicle by the user's movements, which are tracked by the sensor. In the vehicle, there is a marker attached which identifies the position and orientation of the car in the virtual test track, and thus there is an interaction between multiple virtual vehicles and the real one. Considering these results, we can conclude that the game goes beyond its educational nature, as this also provides a new perspective on life in society.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125460279","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These applications are very different from conventional applications that use mouse and keyboard, so they require a usability evaluation to verify whether they achieve their goals and satisfy users. We developed a checklist to measure the usability of augmented reality applications in a practical manner. This checklist was developed adapting the ISO 9241-11 and Nielsen Heuristics for an augmented reality context, and criteria created by us. Five experts evaluated two applications to test the checklist. In both cases, the evaluation clearly identified key problems in the application design. They also evaluated the checklist. Analyzing the results, we could determine that the checklist appears to be a possible solution to evaluate usability of augmented reality applications.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134172312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An example of use is described, in which two articulated humanoid characters achieve completion of a cooperative task. This task consists of transfering, with style, objects from one table to another one. Input data obtained by motion capture are also used to generate characters with more realistic movements. The results show that the imposed cooperative task was successfully accomplished and that, the inclusion of style, albeit using a rather simple approach, contributed to the synthesis of more smooth and convincing movements.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129329765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These sensations are extremely important in Virtual Reality simulators for training medical and dental procedures with the goal of increasing the level of motor skills. Many tasks trained, such as teeth and bones drilling, are held in rigid bodies and require parts of the virtual models to be removed. One way to manipulate these objects is by using voxel-based models, which divide the object into smaller parts that can be removed by the haptic device. This paper deals with a new method for haptic rendering with voxel-based rigid bodies that may be composed of various materials with different densities. The method describes the process for obtaining and storing the virtual objects, in addition to detailing the techniques used for collision detection, calculating the force feedback and removing parts of objects during the drilling process. The paper ends with an experiment that shows that the method provides stability and allows the haptic device to simulate the removal of voxels and also different material densities properly.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"151 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131911774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally this kind of task uses specific interaction devices with 4 or more DOF. Current applications involving 3D interaction use interaction devices for object modelling or for the implementation of navigation, selection and manipulation tecniques in a virtual environment. A related problem is the necessity of controlling tasks that are naturally non-immersive, such as symbolic input (e.g., text, photos). Another problem is the large learning curve to handle such non-conventional devices. The addition of sensors and the popularization of smartphones and tablets, allowed the use of such devices in virtual engineering environments. Thes devices, besides their popularity and sensors, differs by the possibility of including additional information and performing naturally non-immersive tasks. This work presents a 3D interaction tablet-based tool, which allows the aggregation of all major 3D interaction topics, such as navigation, selection, manipulation, system control and symbolic input.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123653390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have approached the problem by developing an integration layer between the DANCE framework and the Bullet Physics engine. This layer also implements a structure to map and visualize several types of articulated character joints between the framework and the library, making possible the development and analysis of realistic animations of multiple avatars. A case study was developed and two main analyses were conducted, involving multiple articulated characters executing four specific dance steps to determine the stability, performance and scalability of the generated animations. The results show that the integration layer successfully provides the generation of multiple realistic 3D animated avatars, ruled by Dynamics.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125869311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
