Many works have been done during the last years to develop checking software. French National project “Digitizing building regulations” aims at formalizing regulation for automatic compliance checking purposes. In this paper we focus on semantic topological aspects to show gains, limits and perspectives of this approach.

The \u0000application of BIM is not as straightforward as it sounds though, with numerous software solutions available, \u0000various implementation processes across the project lifecycle, which challenges the interoperability and how \u0000information flows throughout the various project stages. This paper performs and presents a systematic review \u0000of the BIM software landscape currently available for the construction industry across the various project phases \u0000and in alignment with the 2013 RIBA Plan of Works. A gap analysis is conducted among these BIM solutions \u0000to examine the different software application areas, software architecture, interoperability possibilities, accessibility \u0000and affordability, by applying descriptive statistics. Surprisingly, the BIM software ecosystem is fragmented \u0000across the different project stages and highly proprietary and further hindered by the large number of \u0000specialised and highly sophisticated solutions addressed to advanced computer users. To this end, the paper \u0000aims to inform the industry’s stakeholders, policy makers and software vendors, while shedding light on the \u0000extent that sophisticated BIM solutions can be disseminated to the market.

Yet, despite this importance the discussion of data quality is often relegated to an afterthought. \u0000One potential use of BIM model data is the generation of building energy performance simulation models. \u0000Within this paper a checking procedure is presented, to ensure that user-supplied BIM models meet \u0000threshold data quality criteria and are suitable for the generation of input data files for energy analysis. \u0000The checking procedure comprises of three sets of checking operations: consistency, correctness and completeness \u0000checks. Consistency checks ensure that the input data are schema compatible; data completeness \u0000checks invoke the sequential execution of checking rules to verify the existence of required data; data correctness \u0000checks perform more elaborate detection of geometric errors appearing in surfaces, space volumes \u0000and clashes between architectural elements, which affect the building energy performance simulation model \u0000generation process. The checking procedure has been implemented and tested in two case-study buildings. \u0000Although the BIM modelers had been provided with modeling guidelines, multiple inaccuracies and data \u0000insufficiencies were still present, highlighting the importance of a posteriori process implementation that \u0000checks the validity of the model in relation to the purpose of its use.
