The bacterium was chosen because of its abundance in the seawater and meet metals are inclined to be attacked by this bacterium. Pitting ccrrcsicnen the mild steel coupon as a result of the bacteria attack was investigated. A set of mild steel coupon sample was immersed in sterile artificial seawater while another set was immesed in bacteia inoculated artificial seawater for 12 days The samples were viewed under Infinite Focus Microscope to obtain information on the biofilm surface and thickness and dimension of the pits It was found that biofilm with thickness of 37μm was formed on the mild steel surface after 12 days of immersion in bacteria inoculated medium This finding suggested that Ml C had taken place The existence of pitting corrosion on mild steel coupon immersed in bacteria inoculated medium was attributed to the concentration cells originating from the heterogeneous surface of biofilm, while the absence of pitting corrosion on mild steel coupon exposed to sterile medium further proved that heterogeneous biofilm is a crucial factor for the initiation of pitting corrosion.","PeriodicalId":193430,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium on Humanities, Science and Engineering Research","volume":"291 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122821812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A customised automated tool is developed to calculate landscape diversity of greenery, building, roads, grounds and so on. A tool constitute of Algorithms based on Open Source Map Window GIS API, Google API, Mapobject API. An algorithm to draw a point, line and polygon on JPEG Imagery file and store it as shape file. The purpose of developing such tool is to help user who are unknown to GIS to plot the greenery, ground, building and so on by drawing a polygon as it could be done in paint brush. This paper discusses the results obtained from the experiment s and compares them with the performance of the other types of helmets with respect to their designs, comfort levels and protection mechanisms The result of the shock absorption test shows that the helmet absorbed 78% of a nominal impact energy of 49 J. The 8-mm thick helmet resisted full penetration at an applied impact force of 132.3 N with an average penetration depth of 4.52 mm. These results indicate that the ballistic helmet being investigated provide a good impact protection but not superior to that of the ACH-type helmet.","PeriodicalId":193430,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium on Humanities, Science and Engineering Research","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134090580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polycarbonate has a very high yield strain and ductility, which enables it to have a good resistance against perforation. The present paper deals with a simulation-based study of impact of projectiles on polycarbonate material plate as a target using ANSYS AOTUDYN by modeling plates and projectiles with 2D solid elements. A finite element method was used for studying the polycarbonate behavior with different thicknesses under impact loading with ballistic velocity by two types of projectiles. Different mechanisms of deformation and subsequent fracture of the plate are observed. They are: elastic dishing, deep penetration, cone and plugging.","PeriodicalId":193430,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium on Humanities, Science and Engineering Research","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122419696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concurrent with the advancements in different sciences and technologies, the face and the nature of human living has experienced significant changes too. Consequently, human being is in a continuous pursuit of better living conditions, both physical and spiritual. The history of literature goes as far back as the history of humanity itself, and therefore, as one of the main branches of humanities, it can, and it should, play a significant role in improving the Quality of Life. This paper discusses and underlines the undeniable and positive effects of literature on improving a number of globally recognized indicators used to evaluate the Quality of Life, namely, Culture, Leisure and Environment.","PeriodicalId":193430,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium on Humanities, Science and Engineering Research","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126550541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sample size for students were 1000 and for staff was 200. These are individuals who participation in the university held annual sports carnival. The response rate for students was 60.8% (608/1000) while for staff was 95% (190/200). Although Pearson's correlation output indicated that sports participation and work performance is not statistically significant (r=.049, p>;.05), it was hypothesized that a positive relationship would exist between these two variables, that is higher participation in sports is associated with higher academic achievement or work performance. Thus, the correlation analysis for students showed that sports participation does not complement a student's academic achievement (r=.019, p>;.05), and for the staff, sports participation and work performance is not statistically significant (r=.049, p>;.05). Based on the empirical evidence, it is hoped that the university will revise its policy by emphasizing the need for its campus citizens to be more physically active as the benefits gained from being healthy would spill over into other aspects of the individual's existence such as better quality of life and wellness.","PeriodicalId":193430,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Symposium on Humanities, Science and Engineering Research","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126042215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
