This study assessed the effects of integrating the legume <i>Stylosanthes guianensis</i> (stylo) into a conservation agriculture (CA) rotation on rice N use efficiency (NUE), and biomass productivity in Madagascar's Midwest Highlands. A factorial field experiment tested soil tillage, stylo biomass management (retention, removal, incorporation), and N fertilizer types (none, farmyard manure, mineral fertilizer), using <sup>15</sup>N isotope labelling techniques, which allowed us to quantify N sources and recovery pathways with high resolution. Mineral fertilizer resulted in the highest grain yield (429 g DM m<sup>-2</sup>), N uptake (6.1 g N m<sup>-2</sup>), and <sup>15</sup>N recovery (52%), surpassing global NUE benchmarks. In the absence of fertilizer, rotation with stylo increased grain yield by 53% and N uptake by 43% compared to continuous rice (189 g DM m<sup>-2</sup>; 2.3 g N m<sup>-2</sup>), reflecting strong biological and structural legacy effects. Although stylo mulch had a high C:N ratio and contributed minimally to direct N uptake, it improved soil moisture and likely promoted conditions favourable to N mineralization. Tillage effects on N uptake and yield were negligible. These findings demonstrate that legume integration under CA can improve N cycling, enhance fertilizer N recovery, and significantly increase NUE and yield resilience in smallholder systems. During crop rotations, periods with arable soils without crops, thereafter called \"bare soils\" are often impossible to avoid after the crop is harvested, prior to sowing of the next crop. However, such periods are underrepresented in studies focussing on N<sub>2</sub>O emissions. Here, we present continuous, high-temporal-resolution N<sub>2</sub>O fluxes during bare soil periods after four major crops, using the eddy-covariance technique at two sites in Switzerland. Overall, periods with bare soil were net sources for N<sub>2</sub>O as well as for carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) and methane (CH<sub>4</sub>). Daily average sums of N<sub>2</sub>O emissions varied between 10 ± 2 and 38 ± 5 g N<sub>2</sub>O-N ha<sup>-1</sup> d<sup>-1</sup> after the respective rapeseed, winter wheat, pea, and maize harvests. While CO<sub>2</sub> emissions contributed 86-96% to the total GHG budgets, N<sub>2</sub>O fluxes accounted for 2% after pea, but for 10-12% after rapeseed, winter wheat, and maize. In contrast, CH<sub>4</sub> fluxes were negligible (< 2%). N<sub>2</sub>O fluxes during bare soil periods increased for all cropland sites with increasing water-filled pore space, particularly at high soil temperatures.
