Losses were measured at 1.2 m below the soil surface using a network passive-wick drainage fluxmeters (DFMs) which were installed across nine commercial farms between August 2014 and June 2016. Sites were located in the Canterbury, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, Waikato and Auckland regions and monitored for a period 51 to 72 months. Twelve DFMs were installed at each site and drainage volumes were validated using an established soil water balance model. At seven sites, losses were calculated using measured drainage and measured concentrations, and at two sites losses were calculated using modelled drainage and measured concentrations. Nitrate-N was the predominant form of inorganic N (96.7–99.9%) in drainage water and annual losses averaged 52  kg/ha/yr for mixed cropping systems with livestock grazing (n = 6) and 101  kg/ha/yr for mixed cropping systems with a focus on vegetable production (n = 3). While not broadly representative of all NZ cropping land uses, results from this study do, nevertheless, suggest that when drainage occurs, nitrate losses may be considerable under the land uses represented here (> 70  kg/ha/y).","PeriodicalId":19297,"journal":{"name":"New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science","volume":"51 1","pages":"274 - 296"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45523130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first shipment of frozen meat from New Zealand to the United Kingdom in 1881 by the ship Dunedin signalled the importance of being at the cutting edge of technology in order to develop and operate the supply chains of perishable products. As such, postharvest scientists within New Zealand have and continue to make important contributions to support horticultural industries, and the unique additional challenges in the supply chain that occurs when you have a live respiring product with inherent biological variability. With rapidly expanding horticultural production within New Zealand and societal drivers to reduce meat and animal product consumption, the need for postharvest horticulture skills and technologies to ensure that products meet consumer’s needs, remains as important as ever. Postharvest science in itself represents a wide scientific skill base allowing the solutions to problems and the generation of knowledge to occur from multiple disciplines. Work presented in postharvest problems ranges from physiology (e.g. gene signalling, metabolomics and cell wall degredation) to technology (e.g. appropriate maturity definition, atmospheric manipulation, heat treatments, etc.) to engineering (e.g. sorting and packaging technologies, cool chain design and mathematical prediction systems). Each component of the postharvest science field plays a role in identifying the causes of problems, narrowing in on the mechanisms and designing solutions to solve the problem as best as possible. The Covid19 pandemic has had many impacts on society. One very noticeable effect on scientists was the inability to travel and meet our colleagues with the same intellectual passions as our own. In particular 2020 was to be a flagship year for postharvest science in New Zealand, with the return of the ISHS Postharvest Symposium, the most important conference of the field, to be held in Rotorua, New Zealand in November 2020. Unfortunately, that was not to be, with the conference delayed until 2024 (https://www.scienceevents.co. nz/postharvest2024). The biannual Plant Science Central held at Massey University in Palmerston North in 2021 was a notable relief in the midst of the pandemic. New Zealand’s tight border controls and elimination policy had led to no cases in the community for a prolonged period and created a unique opportunity for New Zealand-based Plant Scientists to be able to come together, share their work and enjoy the science and social discussions. This special issue was spun out of this conference and the fact that opportunities had been lost over the pandemic, especially for our early career colleagues, where the formation of relationships with other experts of their chosen field is an important part of their career development. This special issue comprises o","PeriodicalId":19297,"journal":{"name":"New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science","volume":"50 1","pages":"97 - 98"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46966707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presence or absence of the self-incompatibility of the accessions was accessed through hand self-pollination. Out of 210 accessions evaluated from 2001 to 2018, 53.3% were registered as self-incompatible, while 46.7% were self-compatible with different degrees of self-compatibility based on the number of formed fruits. Subsequently, the fruit set as a result of inter-crosses between five self-incompatible accessions were evaluated. Fifty per cent of the reciprocal crosses exhibited similar productive efficiency based on fruit set. Self-incompatible accessions, although compatible with each other, revealed differences in restoration, based on the number of fruit and seeds between reciprocal crosses. Using Spearman’s correlation (rs ), significant association between the number of seeds and fruit set in fruits from hand self-pollination were detected in two harvests (rs  = 0.64, rs  = 0.72, respectively). There was also a positive correlation between the number of seeds and yield of pulp (%) in hand self-pollination (rs  = 0.30; rs  = 0.39, P < 0.01), hand cross-pollination (rs  = 0.35, rs  = 0.64) and open pollination (rs  = 0.58, rs  = 0.72), respectively. These associations suggest that the number of seeds could be directly related to the pulp yield and the self-compatibility of feijoa.","PeriodicalId":19297,"journal":{"name":"New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47059451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to examine the postharvest physiology of apricots, fruits were divided into five I AD categories (0.00; 0.01−0.40; 0.41−0.80; 0.81−1.20; and >1.20) and were analyzed in terms of the physicochemical and sensory properties at harvest, after 21 days of cold storage and after 3 days of shelf life. The specified I AD categories differed in terms of ethylene production, flesh firmness, skin colour, composition and sensory properties at harvest. After cold storage and shelf life, ethylene production and respiration patterns, sensory properties, colour and fruit composition were affected by the I AD value. Fruit assigned to the categories I AD 0.81−1.20 and I AD >1.20 categories maintained higher firmness compared with the remaining three groups. Carotenoid, phenol, fructose, sucrose, citric and succinic acid content were affected by the I AD value during storage. Apricots attained optimal properties for consumption in different postharvest periods, depending on their maturity stage. These findings suggest that I AD-based segregation can support apricot fruit management during storage and shelf life.","PeriodicalId":19297,"journal":{"name":"New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science","volume":"50 1","pages":"205 - 222"},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43920476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, research to date has mainly focused on the REEs lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce) and neodymium (Nd), with the effects of praseodymium (Pr) remaining unclear. Therefore, we investigated the effects of praseodymium nitrate (Pr(NO3)3) on the antioxidant capacity and water balance of Lilium longiflorum cut flowers. Our results showed that Pr(NO3)3 increased the activities of peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and four enzymes in the ascorbate-glutathione cycle, the fresh weight change rate, and water balance value, as well as the contents of the osmolytes soluble sugar and proline, while reducing the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), resulting in a prolonged vase life. These findings suggest that Pr(NO3)3 can improve the postharvest quality of L. longiflorum cut flowers by enhancing the antioxidant capacity and water balance.","PeriodicalId":19297,"journal":{"name":"New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46365199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its economic importance, the low productivity of landraces grown in the Caribbean affects its profitability. The objective of the study was to understand the interrelationships between yield and its components in C. chinense towards developing selection criteria for improving yield. Two field experiments, first involving a diversity set of 86 accessions and the second with a subset of 22 promising accessions were carried out in a randomised complete block design with three replications each, and were evaluated for yield as well as 6 yield components (fruit number, clusters per plant, fruits per cluster, average fruit weight, flowers per node and reproductive efficiency) and three partitioning components (total dry weight, shoot dry weight and harvest index). Path coefficient analyses indicated that the important yield attributing characters to be fruit number (or clusters per plant) and average fruit weight whilst principal component analysis revealed the importance of average fruit weight, clusters per plant and harvest index. A restricted selection index involving three yield components is recommended for improving yield in hot pepper.","PeriodicalId":19297,"journal":{"name":"New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2022-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43712457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
