Boarding school tradition is one of the cultural acculturation forms of Islamic studies. There is a reflection that the “santri” relation to the \"kiai\" is an obedience of “sam'an wa ta'atan” by hoping to bless in order that they can get better lives. The blessing is part of the justification of religious symbol that is given by “santri” to their \"kiai\" such as blessing, “karamah” that function as the power source. Santri' assumptions to the \"kiai\" have the practice of \"hisb\" that is believed can result in blessing and clairvoyant. Those symbolic terms are like Barakah (blessing), tawadu', muru'ah, and other irreplaceable symbols that have negative meanings for santri like afraid to be cursed. Good attitudes of kiai always show and utilize symbols that contain moral discipline values (religion) to internalize in building a cultural formula of the blessing myths.","PeriodicalId":192303,"journal":{"name":"Ijtimā'iyya: Journal of Muslim Society Research","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123873856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Islamic Sharia does not forbid Muslims to do it, even there is an indication that it is recommended. The main motivation is to be able to pay more alms in the future. One of investment instruments in Indonesia is Mutual Funds. Indonesia's predominantly Muslim population is one of the triggers for the development of sharia-based mutual funds. However, its development has not been as big as the existing potential market. One of the reasons is there is still a view in the community that sharia-based instruments provide lower returns than non-sharia. This study compares the risks and returns of mutual funds, between sharia and non-sharia based. Sampling of both used purposive sampling, where there were 6 sharia mutual funds and 8 non-sharia mutual funds. The study was conducted in 5 years. The results of the study were: (1) There was no significant difference between the risks of both; (2) There was no significant difference between the returns of both; (3) The performance of non-sharia mutual funds was more dominating than sharia mutual funds.","PeriodicalId":192303,"journal":{"name":"Ijtimā'iyya: Journal of Muslim Society Research","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121889502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
