Many leading politicians had young children and often suffered disproportionately from family disruption, internal exile, imprisonment or death in the years 1793–95. This sample focuses on families of ten Girondin deputés to the Convention, most of whom were executed during the Terror. Based in the commercial port of Bordeaux, several of these families were linked by marriage or friendship. It considers their survival strategies, networks of support, and the trajectories of certain children. The (controversial) reputation of the Girondins was later defended by some of their descendants resulting in Bordeaux's Monument to them, dating from 1901.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":"59 1","pages":"136-148"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43606850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sorel, dans la préface qui accompagne le dernier avatar de sa trilogie comique, se revendique d'une esthétique de la diversité. Sorte de pícaro urbain, Polyandre, homme d’âge mûr de retour à Paris après un intermède provincial, délaisse le voyage de formation pour lui préférer la promenade. Roman bourgeois peignant la vie des figures les plus variées et médiocres, Polyandre est un impressionnant compte rendu de la topographie parisienne et des archétypes sociaux qui y circulent. Les errements de Polyandre agissent comme agrégateurs de personnages typés: le personnage picaresque, défini par sa mobilité sociale et sa perméabilité morale, devient, par inversion comique, promeneur et juge. Mais ces déplacements et décalages burlesques sont aussi, voire surtout, une expression métaphorique de la fonction même de l'histoire comique, qui devient espace d'exploration et laboratoire social.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":"59 1","pages":"67-79"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43263689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, it considers the production and reception of the film, drawing on contemporary periodicals to illustrate Feyder's contribution to the film; second, drawing on Gilles Deleuze's conceptualisation of mirror images in cinema, it argues that The Kiss constitutes an important turning-point within Feyder's output as well as a key illustration of his authorial signature, looking towards the complex portrayals of women which feature in his most famous French films of the 1930s. Key to this analysis is how Feyder mobilizes mirrors to confront spectators with their own collusion in the construction of Greta Garbo's star persona in her films and portraits, and to open broader debates regarding the intersection between authorship and star personae.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":"59 1","pages":"97-116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49082988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Œuvre publiée sous le nom énigmatique de La Rédaction, ce livre dont la paternité est attribuable principalement, voire exclusivement, à Christophe Hanna met en place ce que nous pourrions appeler une critique virale, cherchant à occuper les discours dominants pour les attaquer de l'intérieur plutôt qu'en leur opposant une nouvelle idéologie. Cet article tente en premier lieu de définir la critique virale de Hanna à partir de ses propres textes théoriques et du travail de Guy Debord sur le spectacle. Il aborde ensuite la forme que prend cette critique dans Valérie par Valérie, où l'auteur se dresse contre la séparation du littéraire et du non-littéraire, ainsi que l'ultracapitalisme contemporain et ses ramifications politico-économiques. Finalement, les implications éthiques d'une telle démarche critique implicite y sont analysées, principalement à partir de la sémioéthique, afin de déterminer l'efficacité d'un tel projet.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":"59 1","pages":"51-66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45659195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grâce à ce lexique, le monde des sentiments s'ouvre sur celui des sensations physiques. Dans son univers poétique, certains mots s'appellent, formant des chaînes sémantiques où l'on entend l'inflexion unique de sa personnalité. Je montrerai comment le sujet poétique féminin qu'elle construit exprime et communique l'émotion en se servant de trois grands motifs: le frémissement, l'abandon et l'essor, chacun pourvu d'un lexique éminemment personnel et sensuel. À travers ces combinaisons lexicales qui lui sont propres, elle « dit » la passion avec originalité, et donne une voix au désir et au plaisir féminins. Malgré l'imprécision, le flou et même la pauvreté de son vocabulaire, malgré l'ubiquité des mots « âme », « fleurs », « ange » et « cœur », c'est du corps qu'elle parle, sans le nommer directement.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":"59 1","pages":"15-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44429960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
