They include a proposed instrument which would be the first of its kind capable of recording sound (the ‘paléophone’); treatises on photography and interplanetary communication; poetry, and a body of comic monologues which belong to the current of fumisme. This article argues that Cros's monologues are subtly inflected by his interest in the faculty of speech and technologies of sound reproduction. While they do not explicitly evoke such technologies, they show an acute sensitivity to the quirks and accidents of the spoken word to which neither dramatic convention nor indeed norms of social discourse attribute sense. It is this ill-formed matter, amounting to a kind of discursive ‘noise’, which allows Cros to offer a wry commentary on the pretensions of a fin-de-siècle culture preoccupied with the strategizing of utterance and the production of an objectified record of the spoken word.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49116340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consacrées tout d'abord aux écrivains, les séries de ce type s'ouvrent dans un second temps aux penseurs et aux artistes. Ces entreprises de médiation peuvent paraître relativement simples, aussi bien dans leur forme que dans les enjeux qu'elles soulèvent. Toutefois, elles présentent une pluralité d'orientations et ont cependant ceci de commun que les ouvrages qu'elles publient participent d'une entreprise de fabrique du patrimoine littéraire, et plus largement culturel. Ces livres ont en effet activement contribué à l’élaboration et à la diffusion de l'image d'auteurs, dans une perspective de façonnement du canon, favorisé par le principe même de la collection, qui revêt un effet de canonisation.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":"58 1","pages":"263-272"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43463065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This series, like other collections of illustrated monographs, builds the writer's image through a combination of different types of discourse and several actors. Butor's volume on his own work tends to blur such distinctions and to challenge the collection's model, not only because of the intervention of the writer, but also because of Butor's interest in the processes through which his image is crafted. This paper examines a series of six monographs published on Michel Butor between 1964 and 2009, firstly, in order to shed light on the way the image of a high profile writer is carved in collections of illustrated monographs, and, secondly, to reach a better understanding of Michel Butor's relation to critical discourse and to his own image.","PeriodicalId":19182,"journal":{"name":"Nottingham French Studies","volume":"58 1","pages":"315-331"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41832757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
