Instead of travelling to ships around the world, service support engineers now remotely connect and access data from equipment sensors on-board. With this game-changing approach to fixing equipment issues comes the need to effectively support this change in work-practice since engineers now need to solve complex problems from an onshore location. Based on findings from field studies, we present a prototype as a first-step towards addressing some of the key needs of these engineers which include improving situation awareness for enhanced remote troubleshooting, integrating all relevant information for easier searching, and faster access to relevant personnel for help. The prototype was validated with domain specialists, and based on the findings a set of design recommendations is also presented.","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133224272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Guided by pragmatic philosophy and approaches from futures studies, speculative design, the project seeks to demonstrate how interactive objects can be used to engage the audience in creating alternative narratives about the future. In the first section, the paper outlines a narrative in a form of a timeline of events that leads to a future with explicitly restricted privacy in public spaces. Following the timeline of events, the paper describes the process of scenario development, object design, interaction design and audience engagement. The author outlines how engagement through public art and social media allows the interactive object to serve as means of speculation through John Dewey's notion of consummatory experience, allowing both the designer and the audience to act as agents of speculation. The paper concludes that pragmatic aesthetics and futures studies can provide useful guidance in designing speculative objects and interactions that are open to dialogue and participation. It suggests new research avenues for speculative design research in human-computer interaction (HCI).","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132838990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet it is often difficult for individuals to estimate their own climate footprint and to understand their personal climate impact. However, an activity tracking approach can help individuals to track and visualize their otherwise invisible climate impacts to better understand their personal impact and that of their community. This includes a wide range of activities and thus goes beyond fitness trackers as it aims at a more holistic quantified self with the angle of climate impact. This paper describes the Ducky platform, which is designed to quantify, visualize, and communicate everyday climate activities to understand and motivate its users towards environmental- and climate-friendly behavior. This includes both individual and collaborative impacts. We describe the motivation and system approach and the inclusion of research findings about Norwegian households' climate impacts into the platform together with an initial evaluation.","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132277821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, technology, especially automation, causes many mundane and potentially meaningful activities to disappear. In this sense, each convenient \"enhancement\" could also be understood as an experiential \"amputation.\" This paper presents an exploration of an approach to automation, which seeks to reconcile the advantages of automation with meaningful experience. Hotzenplotz is an electrical coffee grinder combined with a functionally unnecessary manual interaction to create meaning. We empirically compared Hotzenplotz to an off-the-shelf manual and electrical grinder and found the resulting experience to be more fulfilling than the electric grinder and at least as fulfilling as the manual grinder, in terms of, for example, affective experience, meaning, and fulfillment of psychological needs. Hotzenplotz as a viable example of the subtle role an experience-oriented approach to the design of technology can play in shaping our everyday lives.","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115097120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In experience interviews which consider aspects of Positive Design and User Experience we assess which elements contribute to a positive experience in the everyday life of older adults. First results show that most positive experiences revolve around other people (family & friends). In total, twelve experience categories were identified which can be grouped into the three experience themes \"connecting with people\", \"expressing oneself\" and \"meeting a challenge\".","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121318276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Desirability of public transportation and its services is thus of major importance. When developing novel services for public transportation, it is crucial to consider the user -- the traveler -- perspective. We present results of a qualitative study of user needs and expectations of future traveling services, with the focus on the bus and its potential associated services. We interviewed ten students living in Finland who had a broad range of experiences of public transportation in various parts of the world. Our findings reveal topics that can be used as a basis of digital services that support or enrich the traveling experience. The results provide insights for the design of services for future buses, including the user needs at the bus stop, the bus itself and external functionalities that could be linked to the bus ride.","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122883875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The workshop will begin with short presentations followed by plenary discussions. The aim is to strengthen connected thinking whilst highlighting the exchangeable connecting methods from both ACI and HCI and their subfields including Child Computer Interaction (CCI) and Human Robot Interaction (HRI), discussing what these fields learn from each other with their similarities and differences mapped. The output of this workshop will be an initial mapping of the ACI and HCI field's interchange of methods and learning transferability as well as an advanced understanding of how the two fields are useful to each other.","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124716900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern communication technologies, like messengers or social networks, enable people to exchange experiences continuously. However, these technologies exclude some groups, that are not familiar with the use of such services and devices. We present and discuss requirements from interviews and a focus group for a device to engage users in an easy content creation and sharing. Based on our findings, we designed StoryBox, an early prototype that eases the way people can share experiences, memories and moods using visual stories. Further we discuss our future research agenda related to sharing visual stories and present a study design to evaluate our prototype in a two step field evaluation.","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126817662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the discussion that follows the story, we describe using a design fiction approach to explore the outer limits of the design space for a holistic community engagement platform that combines affective computing, geospatial annotation, urban crowdsourcing, social curation, and place-based peer-to-peer networking for enhanced urban livability. We describe the recent turn in design fiction towards real-life impact, and discuss the process of crafting our narrative through decisions about structure, character, and action. We then discuss how \"From a Long Sleep\" helped us to rethink our original design concepts --giving rise to a dedicated voice user interface -- as well as lending shape to the platform structure and informing the design of our prototype. We conclude by presenting 10 design fiction insights and recommendations.","PeriodicalId":190768,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 9th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122125516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
